４-１ I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beseech you to walk worthily of the calling wherewith ye were called, さて、主にある囚人であるわたしは、あなたがたに勧める。あなたがたが召されたその召しにふさわしく歩き、
４-２ with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; できる限り謙虚で、かつ柔和であり、寛容を示し、愛をもって互に忍びあい、
４-３ giving diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 平和のきずなで結ばれて、聖霊による一致を守り続けるように努めなさい。
４-４ There is one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; からだは一つ、御霊も一つである。あなたがたが召されたのは、一つの望みを目ざして召されたのと同様である。
４-５ one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 主は一つ、信仰は一つ、バプテスマは一つ。
４-６ one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all. すべてのものの上にあり、すべてのものを貫き、すべてのものの内にいます、すべてのものの父なる神は一つである。
４-７ But unto each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of Christ. しかし、キリストから賜わる賜物のはかりに従って、わたしたちひとりびとりに、恵みが与えられている。
４-８ Wherefore he saith, When he ascended on high, he led captivity captive, And gave gifts unto men. そこで、こう言われている、「彼は高いところに上った時、とりこを捕えて引き行き、人々に賜物を分け与えた」。
４-９ (Now this, He ascended, what is it but that he also descended into the lower parts of the earth? さて「上った」と言う以上、また地下の低い底にも降りてこられたわけではないか。
４-１０ He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 降りてこられた者自身は、同時に、あらゆるものに満ちるために、もろもろの天の上にまで上られたかたなのである。
４-１１ And he gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; そして彼は、ある人を使徒とし、ある人を預言者とし、ある人を伝道者とし、ある人を牧師、教師として、お立てになった。
４-１２ for the perfecting of the saints, unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ: それは、聖徒たちをととのえて奉仕のわざをさせ、キリストのからだを建てさせ、
４-１３ till we all attain unto the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a fullgrown man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: わたしたちすべての者が、神の子を信じる信仰の一致と彼を知る知識の一致とに到達し、全き人となり、ついに、キリストの満ちみちた徳の高さにまで至るためである。
４-１４ that we may be no longer children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; こうして、わたしたちはもはや子供ではないので、だまし惑わす策略により、人々の悪巧みによって起る様々な教の風に吹きまわされたり、もてあそばれたりすることがなく、
４-１５ but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, even Christ; 愛にあって真理を語り、あらゆる点において成長し、かしらなるキリストに達するのである。
４-１６ from whom all the body fitly framed and knit together through that which every joint supplieth, according to the working in due measure of each several part, maketh the increase of the body unto the building up of itself in love. また、キリストを基として、全身はすべての節々の助けにより、しっかりと組み合わされ結び合わされ、それぞれの部分は分に応じて働き、からだを成長させ、愛のうちに育てられていくのである。
４-１７ This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye no longer walk as the Gentiles also walk, in the vanity of their mind, そこで、わたしは主にあっておごそかに勧める。あなたがたは今後、異邦人がむなしい心で歩いているように歩いてはならない。
４-１８ being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their heart; 彼らの知力は暗くなり、その内なる無知と心の硬化とにより、神のいのちから遠く離れ、
４-１９ who being past feeling gave themselves up to lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 自ら無感覚になって、ほしいままにあらゆる不潔な行いをして、放縦に身をゆだねている。
４-２０ But ye did not so learn Christ; しかしあなたがたは、そのようにキリストに学んだのではなかった。
４-２１ if so be that ye heard him, and were taught in him, even as truth is in Jesus: あなたがたはたしかに彼に聞き、彼にあって教えられて、イエスにある真理をそのまま学んだはずである。
４-２２ that ye put away, as concerning your former manner of life, the old man, that waxeth corrupt after the lusts of deceit; すなわち、あなたがたは、以前の生活に属する、情欲に迷って滅び行く古き人を脱ぎ捨て、
４-２３ and that ye be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 心の深みまで新たにされて、
４-２４ and put on the new man, that after God hath been created in righteousness and holiness of truth. 真の義と聖とをそなえた神にかたどって造られた新しき人を着るべきである。
４-２５ Wherefore, putting away falsehood, speak ye truth each one with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. こういうわけだから、あなたがたは偽りを捨てて、おのおの隣り人に対して、真実を語りなさい。わたしたちは、お互に肢体なのであるから。
４-２６ Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 怒ることがあっても、罪を犯してはならない。憤ったままで、日が暮れるようであってはならない。
４-２７ neither give place to the devil. また、悪魔に機会を与えてはいけない。
４-２８ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need. 盗んだ者は、今後、盗んではならない。むしろ、貧しい人々に分け与えるようになるために、自分の手で正当な働きをしなさい。
４-２９ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear. 悪い言葉をいっさい、あなたがたの口から出してはいけない。必要があれば、人の徳を高めるのに役立つような言葉を語って、聞いている者の益になるようにしなさい。
４-３０ And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in whom ye were sealed unto the day of redemption. 神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない。あなたがたは、あがないの日のために、聖霊の証印を受けたのである。
４-３１ Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and railing, be put away from you, with all malice: すべての無慈悲、憤り、怒り、騒ぎ、そしり、また、いっさいの悪意を捨て去りなさい。
４-３２ and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God also in Christ forgave you. 互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。
