３-１ O foolish Galatians, who did bewitch you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly set forth crucified? ああ、物わかりのわるいガラテヤ人よ。十字架につけられたイエス・キリストが、あなたがたの目の前に描き出されたのに、いったい、だれがあなたがたを惑わしたのか。
３-２ This only would I learn from you. Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? わたしは、ただこの一つの事を、あなたがたに聞いてみたい。あなたがたが御霊を受けたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。
３-３ Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now perfected in the flesh? あなたがたは、そんなに物わかりがわるいのか。御霊で始めたのに、今になって肉で仕上げるというのか。
３-４ Did ye suffer so many things in vain? if it be indeed in vain. あれほどの大きな経験をしたことは、むだであったのか。まさか、むだではあるまい。
３-５ He therefore that supplieth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? すると、あなたがたに御霊を賜い、力あるわざをあなたがたの間でなされたのは、律法を行ったからか、それとも、聞いて信じたからか。
３-６ Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness. このように、アブラハムは「神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」のである。
３-７ Know therefore that they that are of faith, the same are sons of Abraham. だから、信仰による者こそアブラハムの子であることを、知るべきである。
３-８ And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all the nations be blessed. 聖書は、神が異邦人を信仰によって義とされることを、あらかじめ知って、アブラハムに、「あなたによって、すべての国民は祝福されるであろう」との良い知らせを、予告したのである。
３-９ So then they that are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham. このように、信仰による者は、信仰の人アブラハムと共に、祝福を受けるのである。
３-１０ For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them. いったい、律法の行いによる者は、皆のろいの下にある。「律法の書に書いてあるいっさいのことを守らず、これを行わない者は、皆のろわれる」と書いてあるからである。
３-１１ Now that no man is justified by the law before God, is evident: for, The righteous shall live by faith; そこで、律法によっては、神のみまえに義とされる者はひとりもないことが、明らかである。なぜなら、「信仰による義人は生きる」からである。
３-１２ and the law is not of faith; but, He that doeth them shall live in them. 律法は信仰に基いているものではない。かえって、「律法を行う者は律法によって生きる」のである。
３-１３ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: キリストは、わたしたちのためにのろいとなって、わたしたちを律法ののろいからあがない出して下さった。聖書に、「木にかけられる者は、すべてのろわれる」と書いてある。
３-１４ that upon the Gentiles might come the blessing of Abraham in Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. それは、アブラハムの受けた祝福が、イエス・キリストにあって異邦人に及ぶためであり、約束された御霊を、わたしたちが信仰によって受けるためである。
３-１５ Brethren, I speak after the manner of men: Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet when it hath been confirmed, no one maketh it void, or addeth thereto. 兄弟たちよ。世のならわしを例にとって言おう。人間の遺言でさえ、いったん作成されたら、これを無効にしたり、これに付け加えたりすることは、だれにもできない。
３-１６ Now to Abraham were the promises spoken, and to his seed. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. さて、約束は、アブラハムと彼の子孫とに対してなされたのである。それは、多数をさして「子孫たちとに」と言わずに、ひとりをさして「あなたの子孫とに」と言っている。これは、キリストのことである。
３-１７ Now this I say: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God, the law, which came four hundred and thirty years after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise of none effect. わたしの言う意味は、こうである。神によってあらかじめ立てられた契約が、四百三十年の後にできた律法によって破棄されて、その約束がむなしくなるようなことはない。
３-１８ For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise: but God hath granted it to Abraham by promise. もし相続が、律法に基いてなされるとすれば、もはや約束に基いたものではない。ところが事実、神は約束によって、相続の恵みをアブラハムに賜わったのである。
３-１９ What then is the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise hath been made; and it was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. それでは、律法はなんであるか。それは違反を促すため、あとから加えられたのであって、約束されていた子孫が来るまで存続するだけのものであり、かつ、天使たちをとおし、仲介者の手によって制定されたものにすぎない。
３-２０ Now a mediator is not a mediator of one; but God is one. 仲介者なるものは、一方だけに属する者ではない。しかし、神はひとりである。
３-２１ Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could make alive, verily righteousness would have been of the law. では、律法は神の約束と相いれないものか。断じてそうではない。もし人を生かす力のある律法が与えられていたとすれば、義はたしかに律法によって実現されたであろう。
３-２２ But the scriptures shut up all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. しかし、約束が、信じる人々にイエス・キリストに対する信仰によって与えられるために、聖書はすべての人を罪の下に閉じ込めたのである。
３-２３ But before faith came, we were kept in ward under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. しかし、信仰が現れる前には、わたしたちは律法の下で監視されており、やがて啓示される信仰の時まで閉じ込められていた。
３-２４ So that the law is become our tutor to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. このようにして律法は、信仰によって義とされるために、わたしたちをキリストに連れて行く養育掛となったのである。
３-２５ But now faith that is come, we are no longer under a tutor. しかし、いったん信仰が現れた以上、わたしたちは、もはや養育掛のもとにはいない。
３-２６ For ye are all sons of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus. あなたがたはみな、キリスト・イエスにある信仰によって、神の子なのである。
３-２７ For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ. キリストに合うバプテスマを受けたあなたがたは、皆キリストを着たのである。
３-２８ There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye all are one man in Christ Jesus. もはや、ユダヤ人もギリシヤ人もなく、奴隷も自由人もなく、男も女もない。あなたがたは皆、キリスト・イエスにあって一つだからである。
３-２９ And if ye are Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise. もしキリストのものであるなら、あなたがたはアブラハムの子孫であり、約束による相続人なのである。
