| 14-1 |
At that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus, |
そのころ、領主ヘロデはイエスのうわさを聞いて、 |
| 14-2 |
and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from
the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him. |
家来に言った、「あれはバプテスマのヨハネだ。死人の中からよみがえったのだ。それで、あのような力が彼のうちに働いているのだ」。 |
| 14-3 |
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for
the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. |
というのは、ヘロデは先に、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤのことで、ヨハネを捕えて縛り、獄に入れていた。 |
| 14-4 |
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. |
すなわち、ヨハネはヘロデに、「その女をめとるのは、よろしくない」と言ったからである。 |
| 14-5 |
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because
they counted him as a prophet. |
そこでヘロデはヨハネを殺そうと思ったが、群衆を恐れた。彼らがヨハネを預言者と認めていたからである。 |
| 14-6 |
But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in
the midst, and pleased Herod. |
さてヘロデの誕生日の祝に、ヘロデヤの娘がその席上で舞をまい、ヘロデを喜ばせたので、 |
| 14-7 |
Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask. |
彼女の願うものは、なんでも与えようと、彼は誓って約束までした。 |
| 14-8 |
And she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter
the head of John the Baptist. |
すると彼女は母にそそのかされて、「バプテスマのヨハネの首を盆に載せて、ここに持ってきていただきとうございます」と言った。 |
| 14-9 |
And the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that
sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given; |
王は困ったが、いったん誓ったのと、また列座の人たちの手前、それを与えるように命じ、 |
| 14-10 |
and he sent and beheaded John in the prison. |
人をつかわして、獄中でヨハネの首を切らせた。 |
| 14-11 |
And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: and she
brought it to her mother. |
その首は盆に載せて運ばれ、少女にわたされ、少女はそれを母のところに持って行った。 |
| 14-12 |
And his disciples came, and took up the corpse, and buried him;
and they went and told Jesus. |
それから、ヨハネの弟子たちがきて、死体を引き取って葬った。そして、イエスのところに行って報告した。 |
| 14-13 |
Now when Jesus heard it, he withdrew from thence in a boat,
to a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard thereof, they followed him on foot from the cities. |
イエスはこのことを聞くと、舟に乗ってそこを去り、自分ひとりで寂しい所へ行かれた。しかし、群衆はそれと聞いて、町々から徒歩であとを追ってきた。 |
| 14-14 |
And he came forth, and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on
them, and healed their sick. |
イエスは舟から上がって、大ぜいの群衆をごらんになり、彼らを深くあわれんで、そのうちの病人たちをおいやしになった。 |
| 14-15 |
And when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying, The place is
desert, and the time is already past; send the multitudes away, that they
may go into the villages, and buy themselves food. |
イエスは舟から上がって、大ぜいの群衆をごらんになり、彼らを深くあわれんで、そのうちの病人たちをおいやしになった。 |
| 14-16 |
But Jesus said unto them, They have no need to go away; give ye
them to eat. |
するとイエスは言われた、「彼らが出かけて行くには及ばない。あなたがたの手で食物をやりなさい」。 |
| 14-17 |
And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. |
弟子たちは言った、「わたしたちはここに、パン五つと魚二ひきしか持っていません」。 |
| 14-18 |
And he said, Bring them hither to me. |
イエスは言われた、「それをここに持ってきなさい」。 |
| 14-19 |
And he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the
five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed,
and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the
multitudes. |
そして群衆に命じて、草の上にすわらせ、五つのパンと二ひきの魚とを手に取り、天を仰いでそれを祝福し、パンをさいて弟子たちに渡された。弟子たちはそれを群衆に与えた。 |
| 14-20 |
And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained
over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. |
みんなの者は食べて満腹した。パンくずの残りを集めると、十二のかごにいっぱいになった。 |
| 14-21 |
And they that did eat were about five thousand men, besides women
and children. |
食べた者は、女と子供とを除いて、おおよそ五千人であった。 |
| 14-22 |
And straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into the boat, and
to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the multitudes
away. |
それからすぐ、イエスは群衆を解散させておられる間に、しいて弟子たちを舟に乗り込ませ、向こう岸へ先におやりになった。 |
| 14-23 |
And after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain
apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone. |
そして群衆を解散させてから、祈るためひそかに山へ登られた。夕方になっても、ただひとりそこにおられた。 |
| 14-24 |
But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves;
for the wind was contrary. |
ところが舟は、もうすでに陸から数丁も離れており、逆風が吹いていたために、波に悩まされていた。 |
| 14-25 |
And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the
sea. |
イエスは夜明けの四時ごろ、海の上を歩いて彼らの方へ行かれた。 |
| 14-26 |
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled,
saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear. |
弟子たちは、イエスが海の上を歩いておられるのを見て、幽霊だと言っておじ惑い、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。 |
| 14-27 |
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I;
be not afraid. |
しかし、イエスはすぐに彼らに声をかけて、「しっかりするのだ、わたしである。恐れることはない」と言われた。 |
| 14-28 |
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto
thee upon the waters. |
するとペテロが答えて言った、「主よ、あなたでしたか。では、わたしに命じて、水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください」。 |
| 14-29 |
And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked
upon the waters to come to Jesus. |
イエスは、「おいでなさい」と言われたので、ペテロは舟からおり、水の上を歩いてイエスのところへ行った。 |
| 14-30 |
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried
out, saying, Lord, save me. |
しかし、風を見て恐ろしくなり、そしておぼれかけたので、彼は叫んで、「主よ、お助けください」と言った。 |
| 14-31 |
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and
saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? |
イエスはすぐに手を伸ばし、彼をつかまえて言われた、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」。 |
| 14-32 |
And when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased. |
ふたりが舟に乗り込むと、風はやんでしまった。 |
| 14-33 |
And they that were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Of a truth
thou art the Son of God. |
舟の中にいた者たちはイエスを拝して、「ほんとうに、あなたは神の子です」と言った。 |
| 14-34 |
And when they had crossed over, they came to the land, unto Gennesaret. |
それから、彼らは海を渡ってゲネサレの地に着いた。 |
| 14-35 |
And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that
region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,
|
するとその土地の人々はイエスと知って、その附近全体に人をつかわし、イエスのところに病人をみな連れてこさせた。 |
| 14-36 |
and they besought him that they might only touch the border of his
garment: and as many as touched were made whole. |
そして彼らにイエスの上着のふさにでも、さわらせてやっていただきたいとお願いした。そしてさわった者は皆いやされた。 |
