And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness
of Judaea, saying, |
そのころ、バプテスマのヨハネが現れ、ユダヤの荒野で教を宣べて言った、 |

Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」。 |
| 3-3 |
For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying,The
voice of one crying in the wilderness,Make ye ready the way of the Lord,Make
his paths straight. |
預言者イザヤによって、「荒野で呼ばわる者の声がする、『主の道を備えよ、その道筋をまっすぐにせよ』」と言われたのは、この人のことである。 |

Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern
girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. |
このヨハネは、らくだの毛ごろもを着物にし、腰に皮の帯をしめ、いなごと野蜜とを食物としていた。 |

Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round
about the Jordan; |
すると、エルサレムとユダヤ全土とヨルダン附近一帯の人々が、ぞくぞくとヨハネのところに出てきて、 |

and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing
their sins. |
自分の罪を告白し、ヨルダン川でヨハネからバプテスマを受けた。 |

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his
baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from
the wrath to come? |
ヨハネは、パリサイ人やサドカイ人が大ぜいバプテスマを受けようとしてきたのを見て、彼らに言った、「まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、おまえたちはのがれられると、だれが教えたのか。 |

Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance: |
だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ。 |
| 3-9 |
think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father:
for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children
unto Abraham. |
自分たちの父にはアブラハムがあるなどと、心の中で思ってもみるな。おまえたちに言っておく、神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ。 |

even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore
that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. |
斧がすでに木の根もとに置かれている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はことごとく切られて、火の中に投げ込まれるのだ。 |
| 3-11 |
I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh
after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall
baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire: |
わたしは悔改めのために、水でおまえたちにバプテスマを授けている。しかし、わたしのあとから来る人はわたしよりも力のあるかたで、わたしはそのくつをぬがせてあげる値うちもない。このかたは、聖霊と火とによっておまえたちにバプテスマをお授けになるであろう。 |

whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his
threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he
will burn up with unquenchable fire. |
また、箕を手に持って、打ち場の麦をふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、からは消えない火で焼き捨てるであろう」。 |

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized
of him. |
そのときイエスは、ガリラヤを出てヨルダン川に現れ、ヨハネのところにきて、バプテスマを受けようとされた。 |
| 3-14 |
But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be
baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? |
ところがヨハネは、それを思いとどまらせようとして言った、「わたしこそあなたからバプテスマを受けるはずですのに、あなたがわたしのところにおいでになるのですか」。 |
| 3-15 |
But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus
it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. |
しかし、イエスは答えて言われた、「今は受けさせてもらいたい。このように、すべての正しいことを成就するのは、われわれにふさわしいことである」。そこでヨハネはイエスの言われるとおりにした。 |

And Jesus when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and
lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending
as a dove, and coming upon him; |
イエスはバプテスマを受けるとすぐ、水から上がられた。すると、見よ、天が開け、神の御霊がはとのように自分の上に下ってくるのを、ごらんになった。 |

and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved
Son, in whom I am well pleased. |
また天から声があって言った、「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。 |
