3-1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. ネブカデネザル王は一つの金の像を造った。その高さは六十キュビト、その幅は六キュビトで、彼はこれをバビロン州のドラの平野に立てた。
3-2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. そしてネブカデネザル王は、総督、長官、知事、参議、庫官、法官、高僧および諸州の官吏たちを召し集め、ネブカデネザル王の立てたこの像の落成式に臨ませようとした。
3-3 Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. そこで、総督、長官、知事、参議、庫官、法官、高僧および諸州の官吏たちは、ネブカデネザル王の立てた像の落成式に臨み、そのネブカデネザルの立てた像の前に立った。
3-4 Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 時に伝令者は大声に呼ばわって言った、「諸民、諸族、諸国語の者よ、あなたがたにこう命じられる。
3-5 that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up; 角笛、横笛、琴、三角琴、立琴、風笛などの、もろもろの楽器の音を聞く時は、ひれ伏してネブカデネザル王の立てた金の像を拝まなければならない。
3-6 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. だれでもひれ伏して拝まない者は、ただちに火の燃える炉の中に投げ込まれる」と。
3-7 Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. そこで民らはみな、角笛、横笛、琴、三角琴、立琴、風笛などの、もろもろの楽器の音を聞くや、諸民、諸族、諸国語の者たちはみな、ひれ伏して、ネブカデネザル王の立てた金の像を拝んだ。
3-8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. その時、あるカルデヤびとらが進みきて、ユダヤ人をあしざまに訴えた。
3-9 They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever. すなわち彼らはネブカデネザル王に言った、「王よ、とこしえに生きながらえられますように。
3-10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; 王よ、あなたは命令を出して仰せられました。すべて、角笛、横笛、琴、三角琴、立琴、風笛などの、もろもろの楽器の音を聞く者は皆、ひれ伏して金の像を拝まなければならない。
3-11 and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. また、だれでもひれ伏して拝まない者はみな、火の燃える炉の中に投げ込まれると。
3-12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. ここにあなたが任命して、バビロン州の事務をつかさどらせられているユダヤ人シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴがおります。王よ、この人々はあなたを尊ばず、あなたの神々にも仕えず、あなたの立てられた金の像をも拝もうとしません」。
3-13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king. そこでネブカデネザルは怒りかつ憤って、シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴを連れてこいと命じたので、この人々を王の前に連れてきた。
3-14 Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? ネブカデネザルは彼らに言った、「シャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴよ、あなたがたがわが神々に仕えず、またわたしの立てた金の像を拝まないとは、ほんとうなのか。
3-15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands? あなたがたがもし、角笛、横笛、琴、三角琴、立琴、風笛などの、もろもろの楽器の音を聞くときにひれ伏して、わたしが立てた像を、ただちに拝むならば、それでよろしい。しかし、拝むことをしないならば、ただちに火の燃える炉の中に投げ込まれる。いったい、どの神が、わたしの手からあなたがたを救うことができようか」。
3-16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter. シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴは王に答えて言った、「ネブカデネザルよ、この事について、お答えする必要はありません。
3-17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king. もしそんなことになれば、わたしたちの仕えている神は、その火の燃える炉から、わたしたちを救い出すことができます。また王よ、あなたの手から、わたしたちを救い出されます。
3-18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. たといそうでなくても、王よ、ご承知ください。わたしたちはあなたの神々に仕えず、またあなたの立てた金の像を拝みません」。
3-19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was wont to be heated. そこでネブカデネザルは怒りに満ち、シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴにむかって、顔色を変え、炉を平常よりも七倍熱くせよと命じた。
3-20 And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. またその軍勢の中の力の強い人々を呼んで、シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴを縛って、彼らを火の燃える炉の中に投げ込めと命じた。
3-21 Then these men were bound in their hosen, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. そこでこの人々は、外套、下着、帽子、その他の衣服のまま縛られて、火の燃える炉の中に投げ込まれた。
3-22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. 王の命令はきびしく、かつ炉は、はなはだしく熱していたので、シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴを引きつれていった人々は、その火炎に焼き殺された。
3-23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. シャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴの三人は縛られたままで、火の燃える炉の中に落ち込んだ。
3-24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. その時、ネブカデネザル王は驚いて急ぎ立ちあがり、大臣たちに言った、「われわれはあの三人を縛って、火の中に投げ入れたではないか」。彼らは王に答えて言った、「王よ、そのとおりです」。
3-25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods. 王は答えて言った、「しかし、わたしの見るのに四人の者がなわめなしに、火の中を歩いているが、なんの害をも受けていない。その第四の者の様子は神の子のようだ」。
3-26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace: he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of the fire. そこでネブカデネザルは、その火の燃える炉の入口に近寄って、「いと高き神のしもべシャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴよ、出てきなさい」と言ったので、シャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴはその火の中から出てきた。
3-27 And the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them. 総督、長官、知事および王の大臣たちも集まってきて、この人々を見たが、火は彼らの身にはなんの力もなく、その頭の毛は焼けず、その外套はそこなわれず、火のにおいもこれに付かなかった。
3-28 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. ネブカデネザルは言った、「シャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴの神はほむべきかな。神はその使者をつかわして、自分に寄り頼むしもべらを救った。また彼らは自分の神以外の神に仕え、拝むよりも、むしろ王の命令を無視し、自分の身をも捨てようとしたのだ。
3-29 Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort. それでわたしはいま命令を下す。諸民、諸族、諸国語の者のうちだれでも、シャデラク、メシャク、アベデネゴの神をののしる者があるならば、その身は切り裂かれ、その家は滅ぼされなければならない。このように救を施すことのできる神は、ほかにないからだ」。
3-30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon. こうして、王はシャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴの位を進めて、バビロン州におらせた。
