2-1 After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was pacified, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her. これらのことの後、アハシュエロス王の怒りがとけ、王はワシテおよび彼女のしたこと、また彼女に対して定めたことを思い起した。
2-2 Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king: 時に王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「美しい若い処女たちを王のために尋ね求めましょう。
2-3 and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king’s chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them; どうぞ王はこの国の各州において役人を選び、美しい若い処女をことごとく首都スサにある婦人の居室に集めさせ、婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイの管理のもとにおいて、化粧のための品々を彼らに与えてください。
2-4 and let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so. こうして御意にかなうおとめをとって、ワシテの代りに王妃としてください」。王はこの事をよしとし、そのように行った。
2-5 There was a certain Jew in Shushan the palace, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite, さて首都スサにひとりのユダヤ人がいた。名をモルデカイといい、キシのひこ、シメイの孫、ヤイルの子で、ベニヤミンびとであった。
2-6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives that had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away. 彼はバビロンの王ネブカデネザルが捕えていったユダの王エコニヤと共に捕えられていった捕虜のひとりで、エルサレムから捕え移された者である。
2-7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maiden was fair and beautiful; and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter. 彼はそのおじの娘ハダッサすなわちエステルを養い育てた。彼女には父も母もなかったからである。このおとめは美しく、かわいらしかったが、その父母の死後、モルデカイは彼女を引きとって自分の娘としたのである。
2-8 So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken into the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women. 王の命令と詔が伝えられ、多くのおとめが首都スサに集められて、ヘガイの管理のもとにおかれたとき、エステルもまた王宮に携え行かれ、婦人をつかさどるヘガイの管理のもとにおかれた。
2-9 And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with her portions, and the seven maidens who were meet to be given her out of the king’s house: and he removed her and her maidens to the best place of the house of the women. このおとめはヘガイの心にかなって、そのいつくしみを得た。すなわちヘガイはすみやかに彼女に化粧の品々および食物の分け前を与え、また宮中から七人のすぐれた侍女を選んで彼女に付き添わせ、彼女とその侍女たちを婦人の居室のうちの最も良い所に移した。
2-10 Esther had not made known her people nor her kindred; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known. エステルは自分の民のことをも、自分の同族のことをも人に知らせなかった。モルデカイがこれを知らすなと彼女に命じたからである。
2-11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women’s house, to know how Esther did, and what would become of her. モルデカイはエステルの様子および彼女がどうしているかを知ろうと、毎日婦人の居室の庭の前を歩いた。
2-12 Now when the turn of every maiden was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that it had been done to her according to the law for the women twelve months (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit , six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odors and with the things for the purifying of the women), おとめたちはおのおの婦人のための規定にしたがって十二か月を経て後、順番にアハシュエロス王の所へ行くのであった。これは彼らの化粧の期間として、没薬の油を用いること六か月、香料および婦人の化粧に使う品々を用いること六か月が定められていたからである。
2-13 then in this wise came the maiden unto the king: whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house. こうしておとめは王の所へ行くのであった。そしておとめが婦人の居室を出て王宮へ行く時には、すべてその望む物が与えられた。
2-14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s chamberlain, who kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and she were called by name. そして夕方行って、あくる朝第二の婦人の居室に帰り、そばめたちをつかさどる王の侍従シャシガズの管理に移された。王がその女を喜び、名ざして召すのでなければ、再び王の所へ行くことはなかった。
2-15 Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her. さてモルデカイのおじアビハイルの娘、すなわちモルデカイが引きとって自分の娘としたエステルが王の所へ行く順番となったが、彼女は婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイが勧めた物のほか何をも求めなかった。エステルはすべて彼女を見る者に喜ばれた。
2-16 So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign. エステルがアハシュエロス王に召されて王宮へ行ったのは、その治世の第七年の十月、すなわちテベテの月であった。
2-17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained favor and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti. 王はすべての婦人にまさってエステルを愛したので、彼女はすべての処女にまさって王の前に恵みといつくしみとを得た。王はついに王妃の冠を彼女の頭にいただかせ、ワシテに代って王妃とした。
2-18 Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the bounty of the king. そして王は大いなる酒宴を催して、すべての大臣と侍臣をもてなした。エステルの酒宴がこれである。また諸州に免税を行い、王の大きな度量にしたがって贈り物を与えた。
2-19 19?And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate. 二度目に処女たちが集められたとき、モルデカイは王の門にすわっていた。
2-20 Esther had not yet made known her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him. エステルはモルデカイが命じたように、まだ自分の同族のことをも自分の民のことをも人に知らせなかった。エステルはモルデカイの言葉に従うこと、彼に養い育てられた時と少しも変らなかった。
2-21 In those days, while Mordecai was sitting in the king’s gate, two of the king’s chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those that kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus. そのころ、モルデカイが王の門にすわっていた時、王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタンとテレシのふたりが怒りのあまりアハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていたが、
2-22 And the thing became known to Mordecai, who showed it unto Esther the queen; and Esther told the king thereof in Mordecai’s name. その事がモルデカイに知れたので、彼はこれを王妃エステルに告げ、エステルはこれをモルデカイの名をもって王に告げた。
2-23 And when inquisition was made of the matter, and it was found to be so, they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king. その事が調べられて、それに相違ないことがあらわれたので、彼らふたりは木にかけられた。この事は王の前で日誌の書にかきしるされた。
