Now when Mordecai knew all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry; |
モルデカイはすべてこのなされたことを知ったとき、その衣を裂き、荒布をまとい、灰をかぶり、町の中へ行って大声をあげ、激しく叫んで、 |

and he came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter within the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth. |
王の門の入口まで行った。荒布をまとっては王の門の内にはいることができないからである。 |

And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes. |
すべて王の命令と詔をうけ取った各州ではユダヤ人のうちに大いなる悲しみがあり、断食、嘆き、叫びが起り、また荒布をまとい、灰の上に座する者が多かった。 |

And Esther’s maidens and her chamberlains came and told it her; and the queen was exceedingly grieved: and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take his sackcloth from off him; but he received it not. |
エステルの侍女たちおよび侍従たちがきて、この事を告げたので、王妃は非常に悲しみ、モルデカイに着物を贈り、それを着せて、荒布を脱がせようとしたが受けなかった。 |

Then called Esther for Hathach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and charged him to go to Mordecai, to know what this was, and why it was. |
そこでエステルは王の侍従のひとりで、王が自分にはべらせたハタクを召し、モルデカイのもとへ行って、それは何事であるか、何ゆえであるかを尋ねて来るようにと命じた。 |

So Hathach went forth to Mordecai unto the broad place of the city, which was before the king’s gate. |
ハタクは出て、王の門の前にある町の広場にいるモルデカイのもとへ行くと、 |
| 4-7 |
And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and the exact sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them. |
モルデカイは自分の身に起ったすべての事を彼に告げ、かつハマンがユダヤ人を滅ぼすことのために王の金庫に量り入れると約束した銀の正確な額を告げた。 |

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given out in Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him, for her people. |
また彼らを滅ぼさせるために、スサで発布された詔書の写しを彼にわたし、それをエステルに見せ、かつ説きあかし、彼女が王のもとへ行ってその民のために王のあわれみを請い、王の前に願い求めるように彼女に言い伝えよと言った。 |

And Hathach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai. |
ハタクが帰ってきてモルデカイの言葉をエステルに告げたので、 |

Then Esther spake unto Hathach, and gave him a message unto Mordecai saying: |
エステルはハタクに命じ、モルデカイに言葉を伝えさせて言った、 |
| 4-11 |
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except those to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days. |
「王の侍臣および王の諸州の民は皆、男でも女でも、すべて召されないのに内庭にはいって王のもとへ行く者は、必ず殺されなければならないという一つの法律のあることを知っています。ただし王がその者に金の笏を伸べれば生きることができるのです。しかしわたしはこの三十日の間、王のもとへ行くべき召をこうむらないのです」。 |

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words. |
エステルの言葉をモルデカイに告げたので、 |
| 4-13 |
Then Mordecai bade them return answer unto Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews. |
モルデカイは命じてエステルに答えさせて言った、「あなたは王宮にいるゆえ、すべてのユダヤ人と異なり、難を免れるだろうと思ってはならない。 |
| 4-14 |
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then will relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father’s house will perish: and who knoweth whether thou art not come to the kingdom for such a time as this? |
あなたがもし、このような時に黙っているならば、ほかの所から、助けと救がユダヤ人のために起るでしょう。しかし、あなたとあなたの父の家とは滅びるでしょう。あなたがこの国に迎えられたのは、このような時のためでなかったとだれが知りましょう」。 |
| 4-15 |
Then Esther bade them return answer unto Mordecai, |
そこでエステルは命じてモルデカイに答えさせた、 |
| 4-16 |
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast in like manner; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish. |
「あなたは行ってスサにいるすべてのユダヤ人を集め、わたしのために断食してください。三日のあいだ夜も昼も食い飲みしてはなりません。わたしとわたしの侍女たちも同様に断食しましょう。そしてわたしは法律にそむくことですが王のもとへ行きます。わたしがもし死なねばならないのなら、死にます」。 |

So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him. |
モルデカイは行って、エステルがすべて自分に命じたとおりに行った。 |
