On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews’ enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her. |
その日アハシュエロス王は、ユダヤ人の敵ハマンの家を王妃エステルに与えた。モルデカイは王の前にきた。これはエステルが自分とモルデカイがどんな関係の者であるかを告げたからである。 |

And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman. |
王はハマンから取り返した自分の指輪をはずして、モルデカイに与えた。エステルはモルデカイにハマンの家を管理させた。 |
| 8-3 |
And Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. |
エステルは再び王の前に奏し、その足もとにひれ伏して、アガグびとハマンの陰謀すなわち彼がユダヤ人に対して企てたその計画を除くことを涙ながらに請い求めた。 |

Then the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre. So Esther arose, and stood before the king. |
王はエステルにむかって金の笏を伸べたので、エステルは身を起して王の前に立ち、 |

And she said, If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews that are in all the king’s provinces: |
そして言った、「もし王がよしとされ、わたしが王の前に恵みを得、またこの事が王の前に正しいと見え、かつわたしが王の目にかなうならば、アガグびとハンメダタの子ハマンが王の諸州にいるユダヤ人を滅ぼそうとはかって書き送った書を取り消す旨を書かせてください。 |

for how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred? |
どうしてわたしは、わたしの民に臨もうとする災を、だまって見ていることができましょうか。どうしてわたしの同族の滅びるのを、だまって見ていることができましょうか」。 |

Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, because he laid his hand upon the Jews. |
アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルとユダヤ人モルデカイに言った、「ハマンがユダヤ人を殺そうとしたので、わたしはハマンの家をエステルに与え、またハマンを木に掛けさせた。 |

Write ye also to the Jews, as it pleaseth you, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s ring; for the writing which is written in the king’s name, and sealed with the king’s ring, may no man reverse. |
あなたがたは自分たちの思うままに王の名をもってユダヤ人についての書をつくり、王の指輪をもってそれに印を押すがよい。王の名をもって書き、王の指輪をもって印を押した書はだれも取り消すことができない」。 |

Then were the king’s scribes called at that time, in the third month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language. |
その時王の書記官が召し集められた。それは三月すなわちシワンの月の二十三日であった。そしてインドからエチオピヤまでの百二十七州にいる総督、諸州の知事および大臣たちに、モルデカイがユダヤ人について命じたとおりに書き送った。すなわち各州にはその文字を用い、各民族にはその言語を用いて書き送り、ユダヤ人に送るものにはその文字と言語とを用いた。 |

And he wrote the name of king Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king’s ring, and sent letters by post on horseback, riding on swift steeds that were used in the king’s service, bred of the stud: |
その書はアハシュエロス王の名をもって書かれ、王の指輪をもって印を押し、王の御用馬として、そのうまやに育った早馬に乗る急使によって送られた。 |
| 8-11 |
wherein the king granted the Jews that were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, their little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, |
その中で、王はすべての町にいるユダヤ人に、彼らが相集まって自分たちの生命を保護し、自分たちを襲おうとする諸国、諸州のすべての武装した民を、その妻子もろともに滅ぼし、殺し、絶やし、かつその貨財を奪い取ることを許した。 |

upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, namely , upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. |
ただしこの事をアハシュエロス王の諸州において、十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日に、一日のうちに行うことを命じた。 |
| 8-13 |
A copy of the writing, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published unto all the peoples, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. |
この書いた物の写しを詔として各州に伝え、すべての民に公示して、ユダヤ人に、その日のために備えして、その敵にあだをかえさせようとした。 |
| 8-14 |
So the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king’s service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace. |
王の御用馬である早馬に乗った急使は、王の命によって急がされ、せきたてられて出て行った。この詔は首都スサで出された。 |
| 8-15 |
And Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad. |
モルデカイは青と白の朝服を着、大きな金の冠をいただき、紫色の細布の上着をまとって王の前から出て行った。スサの町中、声をあげて喜んだ。 |
| 8-16 |
The Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honor. |
ユダヤ人には光と喜びと楽しみと誉があった。 |
| 8-17 |
And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them. |
いずれの州でも、いずれの町でも、すべて王の命令と詔の伝達された所では、ユダヤ人は喜び楽しみ、酒宴を開いてこの日を祝日とした。そしてこの国の民のうち多くの者がユダヤ人となった。これはユダヤ人を恐れる心が彼らのうちに起ったからである。 |
