Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob): |
さて、ヤコブと共に、おのおのその家族を伴って、エジプトへ行ったイスラエルの子らの名は次のとおりである。 |

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, |
すなわちルベン、シメオン、レビ、ユダ、 |

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, |
イッサカル、ゼブルン、ベニヤミン、 |
| 1-4 |
Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. |
ダン、ナフタリ、ガド、アセルであった。 |
| 1-5 |
And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already |
ヤコブの腰から出たものは、合わせて七十人。ヨセフはすでにエジプトにいた。 |
| 1-6 |
And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. |
そして、ヨセフは死に、兄弟たちも、その時代の人々もみな死んだ。 |
| 1-7 |
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. |
けれどもイスラエルの子孫は多くの子を生み、ますますふえ、はなはだ強くなって、国に満ちるようになった。 |
| 1-8 |
Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. |
ここに、ヨセフのことを知らない新しい王が、エジプトに起った。 |
| 1-9 |
And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: |
彼はその民に言った、「見よ、イスラエルびとなるこの民は、われわれにとって、あまりにも多く、また強すぎる。 |
| 1-10 |
come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land. |
さあ、われわれは、抜かりなく彼らを取り扱おう。彼らが多くなり、戦いの起るとき、敵に味方して、われわれと戦い、ついにこの国から逃げ去ることのないようにしよう」。 |

Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. |
そこでエジプトびとは彼らの上に監督をおき、重い労役をもって彼らを苦しめた。彼らはパロのために倉庫の町ピトムとラメセスを建てた。 |

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. |
しかしイスラエルの人々が苦しめられるにしたがって、いよいよふえひろがるので、彼らはイスラエルの人々のゆえに恐れをなした。 |

And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor: |
エジプトびとはイスラエルの人々をきびしく使い、 |
| 1-14 |
and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field, all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor. |
つらい務をもってその生活を苦しめた。すなわち、しっくいこね、れんが作り、および田畑のあらゆる務に当らせたが、そのすべての労役はきびしかった。 |

And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: |
またエジプトの王は、ヘブルの女のために取上げをする助産婦でひとりは名をシフラといい、他のひとりは名をプアという者にさとして、 |
| 1-16 |
and he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth-stool; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live. |
言った、「ヘブルの女のために助産をするとき、産み台の上を見て、もし男の子ならばそれを殺し、女の子ならば生かしておきなさい」。 |

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive. |
しかし助産婦たちは神をおそれ、エジプトの王が彼らに命じたようにはせず、男の子を生かしておいた。 |
| 1-18 |
And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive? |
エジプトの王は助産婦たちを召して言った、「あなたがたはなぜこのようなことをして、男の子を生かしておいたのか」。 |
| 1-19 |
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them. |
助産婦たちはパロに言った、「ヘブルの女はエジプトの女とは違い、彼女たちは健やかで助産婦が行く前に産んでしまいます」。 |

And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. |
それで神は助産婦たちに恵みをほどこされた。そして民はふえ、非常に強くなった。 |
| 1-21 |
And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households. |
助産婦たちは神をおそれたので、神は彼女たちの家を栄えさせられた。 |
| 1-22 |
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. |
そこでパロはそのすべての民に命じて言った、「ヘブルびとに男の子が生れたならば、みなナイル川に投げこめ。しかし女の子はみな生かしておけ」。 |
