2-1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. さて、レビの家のひとりの人が行ってレビの娘をめとった。
2-2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 女はみごもって、男の子を産んだが、その麗しいのを見て、三月のあいだ隠していた。
2-3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. しかし、もう隠しきれなくなったので、パピルスで編んだかごを取り、それにアスファルトと樹脂とを塗って、子をその中に入れ、これをナイル川の岸の葦の中においた。
2-4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. その姉は、彼がどうされるかを知ろうと、遠く離れて立っていた。
2-5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river-side; and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it. ときにパロの娘が身を洗おうと、川に降りてきた。侍女たちは川べを歩いていたが、彼女は、葦の中にかごのあるのを見て、つかえめをやり、それを取ってこさせ、
2-6 And she opened it, and saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. あけて見ると子供がいた。見よ、幼な子は泣いていた。彼女はかわいそうに思って言った、「これはヘブルびとの子供です」。
2-7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? そのとき幼な子の姉はパロの娘に言った、「わたしが行ってヘブルの女のうちから、あなたのために、この子に乳を飲ませるうばを呼んでまいりましょうか」。
2-8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maiden went and called the child’s mother. パロの娘が「行ってきてください」と言うと、少女は行ってその子の母を呼んできた。
2-9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. パロの娘は彼女に言った、「この子を連れて行って、わたしに代り、乳を飲ませてください。わたしはその報酬をさしあげます」。女はその子を引き取って、これに乳を与えた。
2-10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, and said, Because I drew him out of the water. その子が成長したので、彼女はこれをパロの娘のところに連れて行った。そして彼はその子となった。彼女はその名をモーセと名づけて言った、「水の中からわたしが引き出したからです」。
2-11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren. モーセが成長して後、ある日のこと、同胞の所に出て行って、そのはげしい労役を見た。彼はひとりのエジプトびとが、同胞のひとりであるヘブルびとを打つのを見たので、
2-12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. 左右を見まわし、人のいないのを見て、そのエジプトびとを打ち殺し、これを砂の中に隠した。
2-13 And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? 次の日また出て行って、ふたりのヘブルびとが互に争っているのを見、悪い方の男に言った、「あなたはなぜ、あなたの友を打つのですか」。
2-14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Thinkest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely the thing is known. 彼は言った、「だれがあなたを立てて、われわれのつかさ、また裁判人としたのですか。エジプトびとを殺したように、あなたはわたしを殺そうと思うのですか」。モーセは恐れた。そしてあの事がきっと知れたのだと思った。
2-15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well. パロはこの事を聞いて、モーセを殺そうとした。しかしモーセはパロの前をのがれて、ミデヤンの地に行き、井戸のかたわらに座していた。
2-16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. さて、ミデヤンの祭司に七人の娘があった。彼女たちはきて水をくみ、水槽にみたして父の羊の群れに飲ませようとしたが、
2-17 And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. 羊飼たちがきて彼女らを追い払ったので、モーセは立ち上がって彼女たちを助け、その羊の群れに水を飲ませた。
2-18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to-day? 彼女たちが父リウエルのところに帰った時、父は言った、「きょうは、どうして、こんなに早く帰ってきたのか」。
2-19 And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock. 彼女たちは言った、「ひとりのエジプトびとが、わたしたちを羊飼たちの手から助け出し、そのうえ、水をたくさんくんで、羊の群れに飲ませてくれたのです」。
2-20 And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? Why is it that ye have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread. 彼は娘たちに言った、「そのかたはどこにおられるか。なぜ、そのかたをおいてきたのか。呼んできて、食事をさしあげなさい」。
2-21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. モーセがこの人と共におることを好んだので、彼は娘のチッポラを妻としてモーセに与えた。
2-22 And she bare a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, I have been a sojourner in a foreign land. 彼女が男の子を産んだので、モーセはその名をゲルショムと名づけた。「わたしは外国に寄留者となっている」と言ったからである。
2-23 And it came to pass in the course of those many days, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 多くの日を経て、エジプトの王は死んだ。イスラエルの人々は、その苦役の務のゆえにうめき、また叫んだが、その苦役のゆえの叫びは神に届いた。
2-24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 神は彼らのうめきを聞き、神はアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブとの契約を覚え、
2-25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God took knowledge of them. 神はイスラエルの人々を顧み、神は彼らをしろしめされた。
