And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. |
全地は同じ発音、同じ言葉であった。 |

And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in
the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. |
時に人々は東に移り、シナルの地に平野を得て、そこに住んだ。 |

And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly.
And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. |
彼らは互に言った、「さあ、れんがを造って、よく焼こう」。こうして彼らは石の代りに、れんがを得、しっくいの代りに、アスファルトを得た。

And they said, Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, whose
top may reach unto heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon
the face of the whole earth. |
彼らはまた言った、「さあ、町と塔とを建てて、その頂を天に届かせよう。そしてわれわれは名を上げて、全地のおもてに散るのを免れよう」。

And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower, which the children
of men builded. |
時に主は下って、人の子たちの建てる町と塔とを見て、 |
| 11-6 |
And Jehovah said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language;
and this is what they begin to do: and now nothing will be withholden from
them, which they purpose to do. |
言われた、「民は一つで、みな同じ言葉である。彼らはすでにこの事をしはじめた。彼らがしようとする事は、もはや何事もとどめ得ないであろう。 |

Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may
not understand one another’s speech. |
さあ、われわれは下って行って、そこで彼らの言葉を乱し、互に言葉が通じないようにしよう」。 |

Jehovah scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the
earth: and they left off building the city. |
こうして主が彼らをそこから全地のおもてに散らされたので、彼らは町を建てるのをやめた。 |
| 11-9 |
Therefore was the name of it called Babel; because Jehovah did
there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did Jehovah
scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. |
これによってその町の名はバベルと呼ばれた。主がそこで全地の言葉を乱されたからである。主はそこから彼らを全地のおもてに散らされた。 |

These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and begat
Arpachshad two years after the flood. |
セムの系図は次のとおりである。セムは百歳になって洪水の二年の後にアルパクサデを生んだ。 |

and Shem lived after he begat Arpachshad five hundred years, and
begat sons and daughters. |
セムはアルパクサデを生んで後、五百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |

And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begat Shelah. |
アルパクサデは三十五歳になってシラを生んだ。 |

and Arpachshad lived after he begat Shelah four hundred and three
years, and begat sons and daughters. |
アルパクサデはシラを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-14 |
And Shelah lived thirty years, and begat Eber: |
シラは三十歳になってエベルを生んだ。 |
| 11-15 |
and Shelah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years,
and begat sons and daughters. |
シラはエベルを生んで後、四百三年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-16 |
And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg: |
エベルは三十四歳になってペレグを生んだ。 |
| 11-17 |
and Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years,
and begat sons and daughters. |
エベルはペレグを生んで後、四百三十年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-18 |
And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu: |
ペレグは三十歳になってリウを生んだ。 |
| 11-19 |
and Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and
begat sons and daughters. |
ペレグはリウを生んで後、二百九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-20 |
And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug: |
リウは三十二歳になってセルグを生んだ。 |
| 11-21 |
and Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years,
and begat sons and daughters. |
リウはセルグを生んで後、二百七年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-22 |
And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor: |
セルグは三十歳になってナホルを生んだ。 |
| 11-23 |
and Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat
sons and daughters. |
セルグはナホルを生んで後、二百年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-24 |
And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah: |
ナホルは二十九歳になってテラを生んだ。 |
| 11-25 |
and Nahor lived after he begat Terah a hundred and nineteen
years, and begat sons and daughters. |
ナホルはテラを生んで後、百十九年生きて、男子と女子を生んだ。 |
| 11-26 |
And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran. |
テラは七十歳になってアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生んだ。 |
| 11-27 |
Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah begat Abram, Nahor,
and Haran. And Haran begat Lot. |
テラの系図は次のとおりである。テラはアブラム、ナホルおよびハランを生み、ハランはロトを生んだ。 |

Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in
Ur of the Chaldees. |
ハランは父テラにさきだって、その生れた地、カルデヤのウルで死んだ。 |
| 11-29 |
And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai;
and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father
of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. |
アブラムとナホルは妻をめとった。アブラムの妻の名はサライといい、ナホルの妻の名はミルカといってハランの娘である。ハランはミルカの父、またイスカの父である。

And Sarai was barren; She had no child. |
サライはうまずめで、子がなかった。 |
| 11-31 |
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son,
and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth
with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they
came unto Haran, and dwelt there. |
テラはその子アブラムと、ハランの子である孫ロトと、子アブラムの妻である嫁サライとを連れて、カナンの地へ行こうとカルデヤのウルを出たが、ハランに着いてそこに住んだ。 |

And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah
died in Haran. |
テラの年は二百五歳であった。テラはハランで死んだ。 |
