| 23-1 |
And the life of Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years. These were
the years of the life of Sarah. |
サラの一生は百二十七年であった。これがサラの生きながらえた年である。 |
| 23-2 |
And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron), in the land of Canaan.
And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. |
サラはカナンの地のキリアテ・アルバすなわちヘブロンで死んだ。アブラハムは中にはいってサラのために悲しみ泣いた。 |

And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and spake unto the children of
Heth, saying, |
アブラハムは死人のそばから立って、ヘテの人々に言った、 |
| 23-4 |
I am a stranger and a sojourner with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place
with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight. |
「わたしはあなたがたのうちの旅の者で寄留者ですが、わたしの死人を出して葬るため、あなたがたのうちにわたしの所有として一つの墓地をください」。

And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him, |
ヘテの人々はアブラハムに答えて言った、 |
| 23-6 |
Hear us, my lord. Thou art a prince of God among us. In the choice
of our sepulchres bury thy dead. None of us shall withhold from thee his
sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. |
「わが主よ、お聞きなさい。あなたはわれわれのうちにおられて、神のような主君です。われわれの墓地の最も良い所にあなたの死人を葬りなさい。その墓地を拒んで、あなたにその死人を葬らせない者はわれわれのうちには、ひとりもないでしょう」。

And Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even
to the children of Heth. |
アブラハムは立ちあがり、その地の民ヘテの人々に礼をして、 |
| 23-8 |
And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury
my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son
of Zohar, |
彼らに言った、「もしわたしの死人を葬るのに同意されるなら、わたしの願いをいれて、わたしのためにゾハルの子エフロンに頼み、 |
| 23-9 |
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the
end of his field. For the full price let him give it to me in the midst
of you for a possession of a burying-place. |
彼が持っている畑の端のマクペラのほら穴をじゅうぶんな代価でわたしに与え、あなたがたのうちに墓地を持たせてください」。 |
| 23-10 |
Now Ephron was sitting in the midst of the children of Heth. And Ephron
the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even
of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, |
時にエフロンはヘテの人々のうちにすわっていた。そこでヘテびとエフロンはヘテの人々、すなわちすべてその町の門にはいる人々の聞いているところで、アブラハムに答えて言った、 |

Nay, my lord, hear me. The field give I thee, and the cave that is therein,
I give it thee. In the presence of the children of my people give I it
thee. Bury thy dead. |
「いいえ、わが主よ、お聞きなさい。わたしはあの畑をあなたにさしあげます。またその中にあるほら穴もさしあげます。わたしの民の人々の前で、それをさしあげます。あなたの死人を葬りなさい」。 |
| 23-12 |
And Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land. |
アブラハムはその地の民の前で礼をし、 |
| 23-13 |
And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the
land, saying, But if thou wilt, I pray thee, hear me. I will give the price of
the field. Take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. |
その地の民の聞いているところでエフロンに言った、「あなたがそれを承諾されるなら、お聞きなさい。わたしはその畑の代価を払います。お受け取りください。わたしの死人をそこに葬りましょう」。

And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, |
エフロンはアブラハムに答えて言った、 |
| 23-15 |
My lord, hearken unto me. A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of
silver, what is that betwixt me and thee? Bury therefore thy dead. |
「わが主よ、お聞きなさい。あの地は銀四百シケルですが、これはわたしとあなたの間で、なにほどのことでしょう。あなたの死人を葬りなさい」。 |
| 23-16 |
And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron. And Abraham weighed to Ephron
the silver which he had named in the audience of the children of Heth, four
hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. |
そこでアブラハムはエフロンの言葉にしたがい、エフロンがヘテの人々の聞いているところで言った銀、すなわち商人の通用銀四百シケルを量ってエフロンに与えた。 |
| 23-17 |
So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre,
the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were
in the field, that were in all the border thereof round about, were made
sure |
こうしてマムレの前のマクペラにあるエフロンの畑は、畑も、その中のほら穴も、畑の中およびその周囲の境にあるすべての木も皆、 |
| 23-18 |
unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of
Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. |
ヘテの人々の前、すなわちその町の門にはいるすべての人々の前で、アブラハムの所有と決まった。 |
| 23-19 |
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field
of Machpelah before Mamre (the same is Hebron), in the land of Canaan. |
その後、アブラハムはその妻サラをカナンの地にあるマムレ、すなわちヘブロンの前のマクペラの畑のほら穴に葬った。 |
| 23-20 |
And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto
Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the children of Heth. |
このように畑とその中にあるほら穴とはヘテの人々によってアブラハムの所有の墓地と定められた。 |
