| 4-1 |
And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain,
and said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah. |
人はその妻エバを知った。彼女はみごもり、カインを産んで言った、「わたしは主によって、ひとりの人を得た」。 |
| 4-2 |
And again she bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but
Cain was a tiller of the ground. |
彼女はまた、その弟アベルを産んだ。アベルは羊を飼う者となり、カインは土を耕す者となった。 |
| 4-3 |
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit
of the ground an offering unto Jehovah. |
日がたって、カインは地の産物を持ってきて、主に供え物とした。 |
| 4-4 |
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat
thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering: |
アベルもまた、その群れのういごと肥えたものとを持ってきた。主はアベルとその供え物とを顧みられた。 |
| 4-5 |
but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very
wroth, and his countenance fell. |
しかしカインとその供え物とは顧みられなかったので、カインは大いに憤って、顔を伏せた。 |
| 4-6 |
And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance
fallen? |
そこで主はカインに言われた、「なぜあなたは憤るのですか、なぜ顔を伏せるのですか。 |
| 4-7 |
If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest
not well, sin coucheth at the door: and unto thee shall be its desire, but do
thou rule over it. |
正しい事をしているのでしたら、顔をあげたらよいでしょう。もし正しい事をしていないのでしたら、罪が門口に待ち伏せています。それはあなたを慕い求めますが、あなたはそれを治めなければなりません」。 |

And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in
the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. |
カインは弟アベルに言った、「さあ、野原へ行こう」。彼らが野にいたとき、カインは弟アベルに立ちかかって、これを殺した。 |
| 4-9 |
And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I
know not: am I my brother’s keeper? |
主はカインに言われた、「弟アベルは、どこにいますか」。カインは答えた、「知りません。わたしが弟の番人でしょうか」。 |
| 4-10 |
And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he
said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper? |
主は言われた、「あなたは何をしたのです。あなたの弟の血の声が土の中からわたしに叫んでいます。 |
| 4-11 |
And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to
receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand; |
今あなたはのろわれてこの土地を離れなければなりません。この土地が口をあけて、あなたの手から弟の血を受けたからです。 |
| 4-12 |
when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its
strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth. |
あなたが土地を耕しても、土地は、もはやあなたのために実を結びません。あなたは地上の放浪者となるでしょう」。 |
| 4-13 |
And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear. |
カインは主に言った、「わたしの罰は重くて負いきれません。 |
| 4-14 |
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and
from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer
in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will
slay me. |
あなたは、きょう、わたしを地のおもてから追放されました。わたしはあなたを離れて、地上の放浪者とならねばなりません。わたしを見付ける人はだれでもわたしを殺すでしょう」。

And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain,
vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for
Cain, lest any finding him should smite him. |
主はカインに言われた、「いや、そうではない。だれでもカインを殺す者は七倍の復讐を受けるでしょう」。そして主はカインを見付ける者が、だれも彼を打ち殺すことのないように、彼に一つのしるしをつけられた。

And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of
Nod, on the east of Eden. |
カインは主の前を去って、エデンの東、ノドの地に住んだ。 |
| 4-17 |
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he
builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son,
Enoch. |
カインはその妻を知った。彼女はみごもってエノクを産んだ。カインは町を建て、その町の名をその子の名にしたがって、エノクと名づけた。

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat
Methushael; and Methushael begat Lamech. |
エノクにはイラデが生れた。イラデの子はメホヤエル、メホヤエルの子はメトサエル、メトサエルの子はレメクである。 |
| 4-19 |
And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the
name of the other Zillah. |
レメクはふたりの妻をめとった。ひとりの名はアダといい、ひとりの名はチラといった。 |
| 4-20 |
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents
and have cattle. |
アダはヤバルを産んだ。彼は天幕に住んで、家畜を飼う者の先祖となった。 |
| 4-21 |
And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle
the harp and pipe. |
その弟の名はユバルといった。彼は琴や笛を執るすべての者の先祖となった。 |
| 4-22 |
And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument
of brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
チラもまたトバルカインを産んだ。彼は青銅や鉄のすべての刃物を鍛える者となった。トバルカインの妹をナアマといった。 |
| 4-23 |
And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; Ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: For I have slain a man for
wounding me, And a young man for bruising me: |
レメクはその妻たちに言った、「アダとチラよ、わたしの声を聞け、レメクの妻たちよ、わたしの言葉に耳を傾けよ。わたしは受ける傷のために、人を殺し、受ける打ち傷のために、わたしは若者を殺す。 |
| 4-24 |
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, Truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. |
カインのための復讐が七倍ならば、レメクのための復讐は七十七倍」。 |
| 4-25 |
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his
name Seth. For, said she, God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him. |
アダムはまたその妻を知った。彼女は男の子を産み、その名をセツと名づけて言った、「カインがアベルを殺したので、神はアベルの代りに、ひとりの子をわたしに授けられました」。

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his
name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of Jehovah. |
セツにもまた男の子が生れた。彼はその名をエノスと名づけた。この時、人々は主の名を呼び始めた。 |
