| 42-1 |
Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? |
ヤコブはエジプトに穀物があると知って、むすこたちに言った、「あなたがたはなぜ顔を見合わせているのですか」。 |
| 42-2 |
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die. |
また言った、「エジプトに穀物があるということだが、あなたがたはそこへ下って行って、そこから、われわれのため穀物を買ってきなさい。そうすれば、われわれは生きながらえて、死を免れるであろう」。 |
| 42-3 |
And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy grain from Egypt. |
そこでヨセフの十人の兄弟は穀物を買うためにエジプトへ下った。 |
| 42-4 |
But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest Peradventure harm befall him. |
しかし、ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄弟たちと一緒にやらなかった。彼が災に会うのを恐れたからである。 |
| 42-5 |
And the sons of Israel came to buy among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. |
こうしてイスラエルの子らは穀物を買おうと人々に交じってやってきた。カナンの地にききんがあったからである。 |
| 42-6 |
And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves to him with their faces to the earth. |
ときにヨセフは国のつかさであって、国のすべての民に穀物を売ることをしていた。ヨセフの兄弟たちはきて、地にひれ伏し、彼を拝した。 |

And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly with them; and he said unto them. Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food. |
ヨセフは兄弟たちを見て、それと知ったが、彼らに向かっては知らぬ者のようにし、荒々しく語った。すなわち彼らに言った、「あなたがたはどこからきたのか」。彼らは答えた、「食糧を買うためにカナンの地からきました」。 |

And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. |
ヨセフは、兄弟たちであるのを知っていたが、彼らはヨセフとは知らなかった。 |
| 42-9 |
And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. |
ヨセフはかつて彼らについて見た夢を思い出して、彼らに言った、「あなたがたは回し者で、この国のすきをうかがうためにきたのです」。 |
| 42-10 |
And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. |
彼らはヨセフに答えた、「いいえ、わが主よ、しもべらはただ食糧を買うためにきたのです。 |
| 42-11 |
We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies. |
われわれは皆、ひとりの人の子で、真実な者です。しもべらは回し者ではありません」。 |
| 42-12 |
And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. |
ヨセフは彼らに言った、「いや、あなたがたはこの国のすきをうかがうためにきたのです」。 |
| 42-13 |
And they said, We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. |
彼らは言った、「しもべらは十二人兄弟で、カナンの地にいるひとりの人の子です。末の弟は今、父と一緒にいますが、他のひとりはいなくなりました」。 |
| 42-14 |
And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies: |
ヨセフは彼らに言った、「わたしが言ったとおり、あなたがたは回し者です。 |
| 42-15 |
hereby ye shall be proved: by the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. |
あなたがたをこうしてためしてみよう。パロのいのちにかけて誓います。末の弟がここにこなければ、あなたがたはここを出ることはできません。 |
| 42-16 |
Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be bound, that your words may be proved, whether there be truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. |
か、あなたがたの言葉をためしてみよう。パロのいのちにかけて誓います。あなたがたは確かに回し者です」。 |
| 42-17 |
And he put them all together into ward three days. |
ヨセフは彼らをみな一緒に三日の間、監禁所に入れた。 |
| 42-18 |
And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live: for I fear God: |
三日目にヨセフは彼らに言った、「こうすればあなたがたは助かるでしょう。わたしは神を恐れます。 |
| 42-19 |
if ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in your prison-house; but go ye, carry grain for the famine of your houses: |
もしあなたがたが真実な者なら、兄弟のひとりをあなたがたのいる監禁所に残し、あなたがたは穀物を携えて行って、家族の飢えを救いなさい。 |
| 42-20 |
and bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so. |
そして末の弟をわたしのもとに連れてきなさい。そうすればあなたがたの言葉のほんとうであることがわかって、死を免れるでしょう」。彼らはそのようにした。 |
| 42-21 |
And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. |
彼らは互に言った、「確かにわれわれは弟の事で罪がある。彼がしきりに願った時、その心の苦しみを見ながら、われわれは聞き入れなかった。それでこの苦しみに会うのだ」。 |
| 42-22 |
And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required. |
ルベンが彼らに答えて言った、「わたしはあなたがたに、この子供に罪を犯すなと言ったではないか。それにもかかわらず、あなたがたは聞き入れなかった。それで彼の血の報いを受けるのです」。 |
| 42-23 |
And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. |
彼らはヨセフが聞きわけているのを知らなかった。相互の間に通訳者がいたからである。 |
| 42-24 |
And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and he returned to them, and spake to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes. |
ヨセフは彼らを離れて行って泣き、また帰ってきて彼らと語り、そのひとりシメオンを捕えて、彼らの目の前で縛った。 |
| 42-25 |
Then Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with grain, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provisions for the way: and thus was it done unto them. |
そしてヨセフは人々に命じて、彼らの袋に穀物を満たし、めいめいの銀を袋に返し、道中の食料を与えさせた。ヨセフはこのように彼らにした。 |
| 42-26 |
And they laded their asses with their grain, and departed thence. |
彼らは穀物をろばに負わせてそこを去った。 |
| 42-27 |
And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the lodging-place, he espied his money; and, behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. |
そのひとりが宿で、ろばに飼葉をやるため袋をあけて見ると、袋の口に自分の銀があった。 |
| 42-28 |
And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, What is this that God hath done unto us? |
彼は兄弟たちに言った、「わたしの銀は返してある。しかも見よ、それは袋の中にある」。そこで彼らは非常に驚き、互に震えながら言った、「神がわれわれにされたこのことは何事だろう」。 |
| 42-29 |
And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that had befallen them, saying, |
こうして彼らはカナンの地にいる父ヤコブのもとに帰り、その身に起った事をことごとく告げて言った、 |
| 42-30 |
The man, the lord of the land, spake roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country. |
「あの国の君は、われわれに荒々しく語り、国をうかがう回し者だと言いました。 |
| 42-31 |
And we said unto him, We are true men; and we are no spies: |
われわれは彼に答えました、『われわれは真実な者であって回し者ではない。 |
| 42-32 |
we are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. |
われわれは十二人兄弟で、同じ父の子である。ひとりはいなくなり、末の弟は今父と共にカナンの地にいる』。 |
| 42-33 |
And the man, the lord of the land, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men: leave one of your brethren with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way; |
その国の君であるその人はわれわれに言いました、『わたしはこうしてあなたがたの真実な者であるのを知ろう。あなたがたは兄弟のひとりをわたしのもとに残し、穀物を携えて行って、家族の飢えを救いなさい。 |
| 42-34 |
and bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffic in the land. |
そして末の弟をわたしのもとに連れてきなさい。そうすればあなたがたが回し者ではなく、真実な者であるのを知って、あなたがたの兄弟を返し、この国であなたがたに取引させましょう』」。 |
| 42-35 |
And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack: and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. |
彼らが袋のものを出して見ると、めいめいの金包みが袋の中にあったので、彼らも父も金包みを見て恐れた。 |
| 42-36 |
And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me. |
父ヤコブは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはわたしに子を失わせた。ヨセフはいなくなり、シメオンもいなくなった。今度はベニヤミンをも取り去る。これらはみなわたしの身にふりかかって来るのだ」。 |
| 42-37 |
And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. |
ルベンは父に言った、「もしわたしが彼をあなたのもとに連れて帰らなかったら、わたしのふたりの子を殺してください。ただ彼をわたしの手にまかせてください。わたしはきっと、あなたのもとに彼を連れて帰ります」。 |
| 42-38 |
And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left: if harm befall him by the way in which ye go, then will ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol. |
ヤコブは言った、「わたしの子はあなたがたと共に下って行ってはならない。彼の兄は死に、ただひとり彼が残っているのだから。もしあなたがたの行く道で彼が災に会えば、あなたがたは、しらがのわたしを悲しんで陰府に下らせるであろう」。 |
