And the famine was sore in the land. |
ききんはその地に激しかった。 |
| 43-2 |
And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food. |
彼らがエジプトから携えてきた穀物を食い尽した時、父は彼らに言った、「また行って、われわれのために少しの食糧を買ってきなさい」。 |
| 43-3 |
And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. |
ユダは父に答えて言った、「あの人はわれわれをきびしく戒めて、弟が一緒でなければ、わたしの顔を見てはならないと言いました。 |
| 43-4 |
If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food: |
もしあなたが弟をわれわれと一緒にやってくださるなら、われわれは下って行って、あなたのために食糧を買ってきましょう。 |
| 43-5 |
but if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down; for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you. |
しかし、もし彼をやられないなら、われわれは下って行きません。あの人がわれわれに、弟が一緒でなければわたしの顔を見てはならないと言ったのですから」。 |
| 43-6 |
And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother? |
イスラエルは言った、「なぜ、もうひとりの弟があるとあの人に言って、わたしを苦しめるのか」。 |
| 43-7 |
And they said, The man asked straitly concerning ourselves, and concerning our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we in any wise know that he would say, Bring your brother down? |
彼らは言った、「あの人がわれわれと一族とのことを問いただして、父はまだ生きているか、もうひとりの弟があるかと言ったので、問われるままに答えましたが、その人が、弟を連れてこいと言おうとは、どうして知ることができたでしょう」。 |
| 43-8 |
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. |
ユダは父イスラエルに言った、「あの子をわたしと一緒にやってくだされば、われわれは立って行きましょう。そしてわれわれもあなたも、われわれの子供らも生きながらえ、死を免れましょう。 |
| 43-9 |
I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever: |
わたしが彼の身を請け合います。わたしの手から彼を求めなさい。もしわたしが彼をあなたのもとに連れ帰って、あなたの前に置かなかったら、わたしはあなたに対して永久に罪を負いましょう。 |
| 43-10 |
for except we had lingered, surely we had now returned a second time. |
もしわれわれがこんなにためらわなかったら、今ごろは二度も行ってきたでしょう」。 |
| 43-11 |
And their father Israel said unto them, If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and myrrh, nuts, and almonds; |
父イスラエルは彼らに言った、「それではこうしなさい。この国の名産を器に入れ、携え下ってその人に贈り物にしなさい。すなわち少しの乳香、少しの蜜、香料、もつやく、ふすだしう、あめんどう。 |
| 43-12 |
and take double money in your hand; and the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks carry again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight: |
そしてその上に、倍額の銀を手に持って行きなさい。また袋の口に返してあった銀は持って行って返しなさい。たぶんそれは誤りであったのでしょう。 |
| 43-13 |
take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man: |
弟も連れ、立って、またその人の所へ行きなさい。 |
| 43-14 |
and God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release unto you your other brother and Benjamin. And if I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved. |
どうか全能の神がその人の前であなたがたをあわれみ、もうひとりの兄弟とベニヤミンとを、返させてくださるように。もしわたしが子を失わなければならないのなら、失ってもよい」。 |
| 43-15 |
And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph. |
そこでその人々は贈り物を取り、また倍額の銀を携え、ベニヤミンを連れ、立ってエジプトへ下り、ヨセフの前に立った。 |
| 43-16 |
And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, Bring the men into the house, and slay, and make ready; for the men shall dine with me at noon. |
ヨセフはベニヤミンが彼らと共にいるのを見て、家づかさに言った、「この人々を家に連れて行き、獣をほふって、したくするように。この人々は昼、わたしと一緒に食事をします」。 |
| 43-17 |
And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house. |
その人はヨセフの言ったようにして、この人々をヨセフの家へ連れて行った。 |
| 43-18 |
And the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses. |
ところがこの人々はヨセフの家へ連れて行かれたので恐れて言った、「初めの時に袋に返してあったあの銀のゆえに、われわれを引き入れたのです。そしてわれわれを襲い、攻め、捕えて奴隷とし、われわれのろばをも奪うのです」。 |
| 43-19 |
And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spake unto him at the door of the house, |
彼らはヨセフの家づかさに近づいて、家の入口で、言った、 |
| 43-20 |
and said, Oh, my lord, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food: |
「ああ、わが主よ、われわれは最初、食糧を買うために下ってきたのです。 |
| 43-21 |
and it came to pass, when we came to the lodging-place, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand. |
ところが宿に行って袋をあけて見ると、めいめいの銀は袋の口にあって、銀の重さは元のままでした。それでわれわれはそれを持って参りました。 |
| 43-22 |
And other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food: we know not who put our money in our sacks. |
そして食糧を買うために、ほかの銀をも持って下ってきました。われわれの銀を袋に入れた者が、だれであるかは分りません」。 |
| 43-23 |
And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them. |
彼は言った、「安心しなさい。恐れてはいけません。その宝はあなたがたの神、あなたがたの父の神が、あなたがたの袋に入れてあなたがたに賜わったのです。あなたがたの銀はわたしが受け取りました」。そして彼はシメオンを彼らの所へ連れてきた。 |
| 43-24 |
And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and
they washed their feet. And he gave their asses provender. |
こうしてその人はこの人々をヨセフの家へ導き、水を与えて足を洗わせ、また、ろばに飼葉を与えた。 |
| 43-25 |
And they made ready the present against Joseph’s coming at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there. |
彼らはその所で食事をするのだと聞き、贈り物を整えて、昼にヨセフの来るのを待った。 |
| 43-26 |
And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down themselves to him to the earth. |
さてヨセフが家に帰ってきたので、彼らはその家に携えてきた贈り物をヨセフにささげ、地に伏して、彼を拝した。 |
| 43-27 |
And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive? |
ヨセフは彼らの安否を問うて言った、「あなたがたの父、あなたがたがさきに話していたその老人は無事ですか。なお生きながらえておられますか」。 |
| 43-28 |
And they said, Thy servant our father is well, he is yet alive. And they bowed the head, and made obeisance. |
彼らは答えた、「あなたのしもべ、われわれの父は無事で、なお生きながらえています」。そして彼らは、頭をさげて拝した。 |
| 43-29 |
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin his brother, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your youngest brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son. |
ヨセフは目をあげて同じ母の子である弟ベニヤミンを見て言った、「これはあなたがたが前にわたしに話した末の弟ですか」。また言った、「わが子よ、どうか神があなたを恵まれるように」。 |
| 43-30 |
And Joseph made haste; for his heart yearned over his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. |
ヨセフは弟なつかしさに心がせまり、急いで泣く場所をたずね、へやにはいって泣いた。 |
| 43-31 |
And he washed his face, and came out; and he refrained himself, and said, Set on bread. |
やがて彼は顔を洗って出てきた。そして自分を制して言った、「食事にしよう」。 |
| 43-32 |
And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, that did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. |
そこでヨセフはヨセフ、彼らは彼ら、陪食のエジプトびとはエジプトびと、と別々に席に着いた。エジプトびとはヘブルびとと共に食事することができなかった。それはエジプトびとの忌むところであったからである。 |
| 43-33 |
And they sat before him, the first-born according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one with another. |
こうして彼らはヨセフの前に、長子は長子として、弟は弟としてすわらせられたので、その人々は互に驚いた。 |
| 43-34 |
And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him. |
またヨセフの前から、めいめいの分が運ばれたが、ベニヤミンの分は他のいずれの者の分よりも五倍多かった。こうして彼らは飲み、ヨセフと共に楽しんだ。 |
