| 4-1 |
Hear the word of Jehovah, ye children of Israel; for Jehovah hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land. |
イスラエルの人々よ、主の言葉を聞け。主はこの地に住む者と争われる。この地には真実がなく、愛情がなく、また神を知ることもないからである。 |

There is nought but swearing and breaking faith, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery; they break out, and blood toucheth blood. |
ただのろいと、偽りと、人殺しと、盗みと、姦淫することのみで、人々は皆荒れ狂い、殺害に殺害が続いている。 |
| 4-3 |
Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. |
それゆえ、この地は嘆き、これに住む者はみな、野の獣も空の鳥も共に衰え、海の魚さえも絶えはてる。 |

Yet let no man strive, neither let any man reprove; for thy people are as they that strive with the priest. |
しかし、だれも争ってはならない、責めてはならない。祭司よ。わたしの争うのは、あなたと争うのだ。 |
| 4-5 |
And thou shalt stumble in the day, and the prophet also shall stumble with thee in the night; and I will destroy thy mother. |
あなたは昼つまずき、預言者もまたあなたと共に夜つまずく。わたしはあなたの母を滅ぼす。 |

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children. |
わたしの民は知識がないために滅ぼされる。あなたは知識を捨てたゆえに、わたしもあなたを捨てて、わたしの祭司としない。あなたはあなたの神の律法を忘れたゆえに、わたしもまたあなたの子らを忘れる。 |

As they were multiplied, so they sinned against me: I will change their glory into shame. |
彼らは大きくなるにしたがって、ますますわたしに罪を犯したゆえ、わたしは彼らの栄えを恥に変える。 |

They feed on the sin of my people, and set their heart on their iniquity. |
彼らはわが民の罪を食いものにし、その罪を犯すことをせつに願っている。 |

And it shall be, like people, like priest; and I will punish them for their
ways, and will requite them their doings. |
それゆえ祭司も民と同じようになる。わたしはそのわざのために彼らを罰し、そのおこないのために彼らに報いる。 |
| 4-10 |
And they shall eat, and not have enough; they shall play the harlot, and shall not increase; because they have left off taking heed to Jehovah. |
彼らは食べても飽くことなく、淫行をなしてもその数を増すことがない。彼らは主を捨てて、淫行を愛したからである。 |
| 4-11 |
Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding. |
酒と新しい酒とは思慮を奪う。 |
| 4-12 |
My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them; for the spirit of whoredom hath caused them to err, and they have played the harlot, departing from under their God. |
わが民は木に向かって事を尋ねる。またそのつえは彼らに事を示す。これは淫行の霊が彼らを迷わしたからである。彼らはその神を捨てて淫行をなした。 |

They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters play the harlot, and your brides commit adultery. |
彼らは山々の頂で犠牲をささげ、丘の上、かしの木、柳の木、テレビンの木の下で供え物をささげる。これはその木陰がここちよいためである。それゆえ、あなたがたの娘は淫行をなし、あなたがたの嫁は姦淫を行う。 |

I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for the men themselves go apart with harlots, and they sacrifice with the prostitutes; and the people that doth not understand shall be overthrown. |
わたしはあなたがたの娘が淫行をしても罰しない。またあなたがたの嫁が姦淫を行っても罰しない。男たちみずから遊女と共に離れ去り、宮の遊女と共に犠牲をささげているからである。悟りのない民は滅びる。 |
| 4-15 |
Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah liveth. |
イスラエルよ、あなたは淫行をなしても、ユダに罪を犯させてはならない。ギルガルへ行ってはならない。ベテアベンにのぼってはならない。また「主は生きておられる」と言って誓ってはならない。 |
| 4-16 |
For Israel hath behaved himself stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer: now will Jehovah feed them as a lamb in a large place. |
イスラエルは強情な雌牛のように強情である。今、主は小羊を広い野に放つようにして、彼らを養うことができようか。 |
| 4-17 |
Ephraim is joined to idols; let him alone. |
エフライムは偶像に結びつらなった。そのなすにまかせよ。 |
| 4-18 |
Their drink is become sour; they play the harlot continually; her rulers dearly love shame. |
彼らは酒宴のとりことなり、淫行にふけっている。彼らはその光栄よりも恥を愛する。 |
| 4-19 |
The wind hath wrapped her up in its wings; and they shall be put to shame because of their sacrifices. |
風はその翼に彼らを包んだ。彼らはその祭壇のゆえに恥を受ける。 |
