11-1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah. さてギレアデびとエフタは強い勇士であったが遊女の子で、エフタの父はギレアデであった。
11-2 And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of another woman. ギレアデの妻も子供を産んだが、その妻の子供たちが成長したとき、彼らはエフタを追い出して彼に言った、「あなたはほかの女の産んだ子だから、わたしたちの父の家を継ぐことはできません」。
11-3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him. それでエフタはその兄弟たちのもとから逃げ去って、トブの地に住んでいると、やくざ者がエフタのもとに集まってきて、彼と一緒に出かけて略奪を事としていた。
11-4 And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel. 日がたって後、アンモンの人々はイスラエルと戦うことになり、
11-5 And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob; アンモンの人々がイスラエルと戦ったとき、ギレアデの長老たちは行ってエフタをトブの地から連れてこようとして、
11-6 and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon. エフタに言った、「きて、わたしたちの大将になってください。そうすればわたしたちはアンモンの人々と戦うことができます」。
11-7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? エフタはギレアデの長老たちに言った、「あなたがたはわたしを憎んで、わたしの父の家から追い出したではありませんか。しかるに今あなたがたが困っている時とはいえ、わたしのところに来るとはどういうわけですか」。
11-8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead. ギレアデの長老たちはエフタに言った、「それでわたしたちは今、あなたに帰ったのです。どうぞ、わたしたちと一緒に行って、アンモンの人々と戦ってください。そしてわたしたちとギレアデに住んでいるすべてのものとのかしらになってください」。
11-9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head? エフタはギレアデの長老たちに言った、「もしあなたがたが、わたしをつれて帰って、アンモンの人々と戦わせるとき、主が彼らをわたしにわたされるならば、わたしはあなたがたのかしらとなりましょう」。
11-10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do. ギレアデの長老たちはエフタに言った、「主はあなたとわたしたちの間の証人です。わたしたちは必ずあなたの言われるとおりにしましょう」。
11-11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah. そこでエフタはギレアデの長老たちと一緒に行った。民は彼を立てて自分たちのかしらとし、大将とした。それでエフタはミヅパで、自分の言葉をことごとく主の前に述べた。
11-12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land? かくてエフタはアンモンの人々の王に使者をつかわして言った、「あなたはわたしとなんのかかわりがあって、わたしのところへ攻めてきて、わたしの国と戦おうとするのですか」。
11-13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably. アンモンの人々の王はエフタの使者に答えた、「昔、イスラエルがエジプトから上ってきたとき、アルノンからヤボクに及び、またヨルダンに及ぶわたしの国を奪い取ったからです。それゆえ今、穏やかにそれを返しなさい」。
11-14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon; エフタはまた使者をアンモンの人々の王につかわして、
11-15 and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon, 言わせた、「エフタはこう申します、『イスラエルはモアブの地も、またアンモンの人々の地も取りませんでした。
11-16 but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh; イスラエルはエジプトから上ってきたとき、荒野をとおって紅海にいたり、カデシにきました。
11-17 then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh. そしてイスラエルは使者をエドムの王につかわして「どうぞ、われわれにあなたの国を通らせてください」と言わせましたが、エドムの王は聞きいれませんでした。また同じように人をモアブの王につかわしたが、彼も承諾しなかったので、イスラエルはカデシにとどまりました。
11-18 Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. それから荒野をとおって、エドムの地とモアブの地を回り、モアブの地の東部に達し、アルノンの向こうに宿営しましたがモアブの領域には、はいりませんでした。アルノンはモアブの境だからです。
11-19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place. 次にイスラエルはヘシボンの王すなわちアモリびとの王シホンに使者をつかわし、シホンに向かって「どうぞ、われわれにあなたの国をとおって、われわれの目的地へ行かせてください」と言わせました。
11-20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ところがシホンはイスラエルを信ぜず、その領域を通らせないばかりか、かえってすべての民を集めてヤハヅに陣を取り、イスラエルと戦いましたが、
11-21 And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. イスラエルの神、主はシホンとそのすべての民をイスラエルの手にわたされたので、イスラエルは彼らを撃ち破って、その土地に住んでいたアモリびとの地をことごとく占領し、
11-22 And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan. アルノンからヤボクまでと、荒野からヨルダンまで、アモリびとの領域をことごとく占領しました。
11-23 So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them? このようにイスラエルの神、主はその民イスラエルの前からアモリびとを追い払われたのに、あなたはそれを取ろうとするのですか。
11-24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess. あなたは、あなたの神ケモシがあなたに取らせるものを取らないのですか。われわれはわれわれの神、主がわれわれの前から追い払われたものの土地を取るのです。
11-25 And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them? あなたはモアブの王チッポルの子バラクにまさる者ですか。バラクはかつてイスラエルと争ったことがありますか。かつて彼らと戦ったことがありますか。
11-26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time? イスラエルはヘシボンとその村里に住み、またアロエルとその村里およびアルノンの岸に沿うすべての町々に住むこと三百年になりますが、あなたがたはどうしてその間にそれを取りもどさなかったのですか。
11-27 I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. わたしはあなたに何も悪い事をしたこともないのに、あなたはわたしと戦って、わたしに害を加えようとします。審判者であられる主よ、どうぞ、きょう、イスラエルの人々とアンモンの人々との間をおさばきください』」。
11-28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him. しかしアンモンの人々の王はエフタが言いつかわした言葉をききいれなかった。
11-29 Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. 時に主の霊がエフタに臨み、エフタはギレアデおよびマナセをとおって、ギレアデのミヅパに行き、ギレアデのミヅパから進んでアンモンの人々のところに行った。
11-30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, エフタは主に誓願を立てて言った、「もしあなたがアンモンの人々をわたしの手にわたされるならば、
11-31 then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering. わたしがアンモンの人々に勝って帰るときに、わたしの家の戸口から出てきて、わたしを迎えるものはだれでも主のものとし、その者を燔祭としてささげましょう」。
11-32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand. エフタはアンモンの人々のところに進んで行って、彼らと戦ったが、主は彼らをエフタの手にわたされたので、
11-33 And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. アロエルからミンニテの附近まで、二十の町を撃ち敗り、アベル・ケラミムに至るまで、非常に多くの人を殺した。こうしてアンモンの人々はイスラエルの人々の前に攻め伏せられた。
11-34 And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. やがてエフタはミヅパに帰り、自分の家に来ると、彼の娘が鼓をもち、舞い踊って彼を出迎えた。彼女はエフタのひとり子で、ほかに男子も女子もなかった。
11-35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back. エフタは彼女を見ると、衣を裂いて言った、「ああ、娘よ、あなたは全くわたしを打ちのめした。わたしを悩ますものとなった。わたしが主に誓ったのだから改めることはできないのだ」。
11-36 And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon. 娘は言った、「父よ、あなたは主に誓われたのですから、主があなたのために、あなたの敵アンモンの人々に報復された今、あなたが言われたとおりにわたしにしてください」。
11-37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions. 娘はまた父に言った、「どうぞ、この事をわたしにさせてください。すなわち二か月の間わたしをゆるし、友だちと一緒に行って、山々をゆきめぐり、わたしの処女であることを嘆かせてください」。
11-38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains. エフタは「行きなさい」と言って、彼女を二か月の間、出してやった。彼女は友だちと一緒に行って、山の上で自分の処女であることを嘆いたが、
11-39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel, 二か月の後、父のもとに帰ってきたので、父は誓った誓願のとおりに彼女におこなった。彼女はついに男を知らなかった。
11-40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year. これによって年々イスラエルの娘たちは行って、年に四日ほどギレアデびとエフタの娘のために嘆くことがイスラエルのならわしとなった。
