| 3-1 |
Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; |
すべてカナンのもろもろの戦争を知らないイスラエルの人々を試みるために、主が残しておかれた国民は次のとおりである。 |
| 3-2 |
only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof: |
これはただイスラエルの代々の子孫、特にまだ戦争を知らないものに、それを教え知らせるためである。 |
| 3-3 |
namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath. |
すなわちペリシテびとの五人の君たちと、すべてのカナンびとと、シドンびとおよびレバノン山に住んで、バアル・ヘルモン山からハマテの入口までを占めていたヒビびとなどであって、 |

And they were left, to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. |
これらをもってイスラエルを試み、主がモーセによって先祖たちに命じられた命令に、彼らが従うかどうかを知ろうとされたのである。 |
| 3-5 |
And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: |
しかるにイスラエルの人々はカナンびと、ヘテびと、アモリびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとのうちに住んで、 |

and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. |
彼らの娘を妻にめとり、また自分たちの娘を彼らのむすこに与えて、彼らの神々に仕えた。 |
| 3-7 |
And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth. |
こうしてイスラエルの人々は主の前に悪を行い、自分たちの神、主を忘れて、バアルおよびアシラに仕えた。 |
| 3-8 |
Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years. |
そこで主はイスラエルに対して激しく怒り、彼らをメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムの手に売りわたされたので、イスラエルの人々は八年の間、クシャン・リシャタイムに仕えた。 |

And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. |
しかし、イスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主はイスラエルの人々のために、ひとりの救助者を起して彼らを救われた。すなわちカレブの弟、ケナズの子オテニエルである。 |

And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim. |
主の霊がオテニエルに臨んだので、彼はイスラエルをさばいた。彼が戦いに出ると、主はメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムをその手にわたされたので、オテニエルの手はクシャン・リシャタイムに勝ち、 |

And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died. |
国は四十年のあいだ太平であった。ケナズの子オテニエルはついに死んだ。 |
| 3-12 |
And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah. |
イスラエルの人々はまた主の前に悪をおこなった。すなわち彼らが主の前に悪をおこなったので、主はモアブの王エグロンを強めて、イスラエルに敵対させられた。 |

And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees. |
エグロンはアンモンおよびアマレクの人々を集め、きてイスラエルを撃ち、しゅろの町を占領した。 3:14こうしてイスラエルの人々は十八年の間モアブの王エグロンに仕えた。 |

And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. |
こうしてイスラエルの人々は十八年の間モアブの王エグロンに仕えた。 |
| 3-15 |
But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab. |
しかしイスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主は彼らのために、ひとりの救助者を起された。すなわちベニヤミンびと、ゲラの子、左ききのエホデである。イスラエルの人々は彼によってモアブの王エグロンに、みつぎ物を送った。 |
| 3-16 |
And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh. |
エホデは長さ一キュビトのもろ刃のつるぎを作らせ、それを衣の下、右のももの上に帯びて、 |
| 3-17 |
And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man. |
モアブの王エグロンにみつぎ物をもってきた。エグロンは非常に肥えた人であった。 |
| 3-18 |
And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute. |
エホデがみつぎ物をささげ終ったとき、彼はみつぎ物をになってきた民を帰らせ、 |
| 3-19 |
But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him. |
かれ自身はギルガルに近い石像のある所から引きかえして言った、「王よ、わたしはあなたに申しあげる機密をもっています」。そこで王は「さがっておれ」と言ったので、かたわらに立っている者は皆出て行った。 |

And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat. |
エホデが王のところにはいって来ると、王はひとりで涼みの高殿に座していたので、エホデが「わたしは神の命によってあなたに申しあげることがあります」と言うと、王は座から立ちあがった。 |
| 3-21 |
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body: |
そのときエホデは左の手を伸ばし、右のももからつるぎをとって王の腹を刺した。 |
| 3-22 |
and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind. |
つるぎのつかも刃と共にはいったが、つるぎを腹から抜き出さなかったので、脂肪が刃をふさいだ。そして汚物が出た。 |
| 3-23 |
Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them. |
エホデは廊下に出て、王のおる高殿の戸を閉じ、錠をおろした。 |
| 3-24 |
Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber. |
彼が出た後、王のしもべどもがきて、高殿の戸に錠のおろされてあるのを見て、「王はきっと涼み殿のへやで足をおおっておられるのだ」と思った。 |
| 3-25 |
And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them , and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth. |
しもべどもは長いあいだ待っていたが、王がなお高殿の戸を開かないので、心配してかぎをとって開いて見ると、王は床にたおれて死んでいた。

And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah. |
エホデは彼らのためらうまに、のがれて石像のある所を過ぎ、セイラに逃げていった。 |
| 3-27 |
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them. |
彼が行ってエフライムの山地にラッパを吹き鳴らしたので、イスラエルの人々は彼と共に山地から下ってエホデに従った。 |

And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over. |
エホデは彼らに言った、「わたしについてきなさい。主はあなたがたの敵モアブびとをあなたがたの手にわたされます」。そこで彼らはエホデに従って下り、ヨルダンの渡し場をおさえ、モアブびとをひとりも渡らせなかった。 |
| 3-29 |
And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man. |
そのとき彼らはモアブびとおおよそ一万人を殺した。これはいずれも肥え太った勇士であって、ひとりも、のがれた者がなかった。 |
| 3-30 |
So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years. |
こうしてモアブはその日イスラエルの手に服し、国は八十年のあいだ太平であった。 |
| 3-31 |
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel. |
エホデの後、アナテの子シャムガルが起り、牛のむちをもってペリシテびと六百人を殺した。この人もまたイスラエルを救った。 |
