Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat. |

So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the borders of Israel,
and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king. |

And the damsel was very fair; and she cherished the king, and ministered to him; but the king knew her not. |

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. |

And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he was also a very goodly man; and he was born after Absalom. |

But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men that belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. |

And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he called all his brethren, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants: |
アドニヤはエンロゲルのほとりにある「へびの石」のかたわらで、羊と牛と肥えた家畜をほふって、王の子である自分の兄弟たち、および王の家来であるユダの人々をことごとく招いた。 |

but Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not. |
しかし預言者ナタンと、ベナヤと、勇士たちと、自分の兄弟ソロモンとは招かなかった。 |

Then Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not? |
時にナタンはソロモンの母バテシバに言った、「ハギテの子アドニヤが王となったのをお聞きになりませんでしたか。われわれの主ダビデはそれをごぞんじないのです。 |

Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon. |
それでいま、あなたに計りごとを授けて、あなたの命と、あなたの子ソロモンの命を救うようにいたしましょう。 |
| 1-13 |
Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thy handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign? |
あなたはすぐダビデ王のところへ行って、『王わが主よ、あなたは、はしために誓って、おまえの子ソロモンが、わたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろうと言われたではありませんか。そうであるのに、どうしてアドニヤが王となったのですか』と言いなさい。 |

Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words. |
あなたがなお王と話しておられる間に、わたしもまた、あなたのあとから、はいって行って、あなたの言葉を確認しましょう」。 |
| 1-15 |
And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering unto the king. |
そこでバテシバは寝室にはいって王の所へ行った。（王は非常に老いて、シュナミびとアビシャグが王に仕えていた）。 |
| 1-16 |
And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou? |
バテシバは身をかがめて王を拝した。王は言った、「何の用か」。 |

And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by Jehovah thy God unto thy handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. |
彼女は王に言った、「わが主よ、あなたは、あなたの神、主をさして、はしために誓い、『おまえの子ソロモンがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろう』と言われました。 |

And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and thou, my lord the king, knowest it not: |
そうであるのに、ごらんなさい、今アドニヤが王となりました。王わが主よ、あなたはそれをごぞんじないのです。 |
| 1-19 |
and he hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host; but Solomon thy servant hath he not called. |
彼は牛と肥えた家畜と羊をたくさんほふって、王の子たち、および祭司アビヤタルと、軍の長ヨアブを招きましたが、あなたのしもべソロモンは招きませんでした。 |

And thou, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. |
王わが主よ、イスラエルのすべての目はあなたに注がれ、だれがあなたに次いで、王わが主の位に座すべきかを告げられるのを望んでいます。 |
| 1-21 |
Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders. |
王わが主が先祖と共に眠られるとき、わたしと、わたしの子ソロモンは謀叛人とみなされるでしょう」。 |
| 1-22 |
And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet came in. |
バテシバがなお王と話しているうちに、預言者ナタンがはいってきた。 |

And they told the king, saying, Behold, Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. |
人々は王に告げて、「預言者ナタンがここにおります」と言った。彼は王の前にはいり、地に伏して王を拝した。 |
| 1-24 |
And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? |
そしてナタンは言った、「王わが主よ、あなたは、『アドニヤがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしの位に座するであろう』と仰せられましたか。 |
| 1-25 |
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, Long live king Adonijah. |
彼はきょう下っていって、牛と、肥えた家畜と羊をたくさんほふって、王の子たちと、軍の長ヨアブと、祭司アビヤタルを招きました。彼らはアドニヤの前で食い飲みして、『アドニヤ万歳』と言いました。 |

But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called. |
しかし、あなたのしもべであるわたしと、祭司ザドクと、エホヤダの子ベナヤと、あなたのしもべソロモンを招きませんでした。 |

Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not showed unto thy servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him? |
この事は王わが主がさせられた事ですか。あなたはしもべたちに、だれがあなたに次いで王わが主の位に座すべきかを告げられませんでした」。 |
| 1-28 |
Then king David answered and said, Call to me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king. |
ダビデ王は答えて言った、「バテシバをわたしのところに呼びなさい」。彼女は王の前にはいってきて、王の前に立った。 |
| 1-29 |
And the king sware, and said, As Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, |
すると王は誓って言った、「わたしの命をすべての苦難から救われた主は生きておられる。 |
| 1-30 |
verily as I sware unto thee by Jehovah, the God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; verily so will I do this day. |
わたしがイスラエルの神、主をさしてあなたに誓い、『あなたの子ソロモンがわたしに次いで王となり、わたしに代って、わたしの位に座するであろう』と言ったように、わたしはきょう、そのようにしよう」。 |

Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever. |
そこでバテシバは身をかがめ、地に伏して王を拝し、「わが主ダビデ王が、とこしえに生きながらえられますように」と言った。 |
| 1-32 |
And king David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king. |
ダビデは言った、「祭司ザドクと、預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤをわたしの所に呼びなさい」。やがて彼らは王の前にきた。 |

And the king said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: |
王は彼らに言った、「あなたがたの主君の家来たちを連れ、わが子ソロモンをわたしの騾馬に乗せ、彼を導いてギホンに下り、 |

and let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel; and blow ye the trumpet, and say, Long live king Solomon. |
その所で祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンは彼に油を注いでイスラエルの王としなさい。そしてラッパを吹いて、『ソロモン王万歳』と言いなさい。 |

Then ye shall come up after him, and he shall come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead; and I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah. |
それから、あなたがたは彼に従って上ってきなさい。彼はきて、わたしの位に座し、わたしに代って王となるであろう。わたしは彼を立ててイスラエルとユダの上に主君とする」。 |
| 1-36 |
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: Jehovah, the God of my lord the king, say so too. |
エホヤダの子ベナヤは王に答えて言った、「アァメン、願わくは、王わが主君の神、主もまたそう仰せられますように。 |
| 1-37 |
As Jehovah hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David. |
願わくは、主が王わが主君と共におられたように、ソロモンと共におられて、その位をわが主君ダビデ王の位よりも大きくせられますように」。 |
| 1-38 |
So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. |
そこで祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤ、ならびにケレテびとと、ペレテびとは下って行って、ソロモンをダビデ王の騾馬に乗せ、彼をギホンに導いて行った。 |
| 1-39 |
And Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out of the Tent, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, Long live king Solomon. |
祭司ザドクは幕屋から油の角を取ってきて、ソロモンに油を注いだ。そしてラッパを吹き鳴らし、民は皆「ソロモン王万歳」と言った。 1:40民はみな彼に従って上り、笛を吹いて大いに喜び祝った。地は彼らの声で裂けるばかりであった。 |

And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them. |

And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar? |
アドニヤおよび彼と共にいた客たちは皆食事を終ったとき、これを聞いた。ヨアブはラッパの音を聞いて言った、「町の中のあの騒ぎは何か」。 |

While he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said, Come in; for thou art a worthy man, and bringest good tidings. |
彼の言葉のなお終らないうちに、そこへ祭司アビヤタルの子ヨナタンがきたので、アドニヤは彼に言った、「はいりなさい。あなたは勇敢な人で、よい知らせを持ってきたのでしょう」。 |

And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king: |
ヨナタンは答えてアドニヤに言った、「いいえ、主君ダビデ王はソロモンを王とせられました。 |

and the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule; |
王は祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンおよびエホヤダの子ベナヤ、ならびにケレテびとと、ペレテびとをソロモンと共につかわされたので、彼らはソロモンを王の騾馬に乗せて行き、 |

and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon; and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard. |
祭司ザドクと預言者ナタンはギホンで彼に油を注いで王としました。そして彼らがそこから喜んで上って来るので、町が騒がしいのです。あなたが聞いた声はそれなのです。 |

And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom. |
こうしてソロモンは王の位に座し、 |

And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, Thy God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne: and the king bowed himself upon the bed. |
かつ王の家来たちがきて、主君ダビデ王に祝いを述べて、『願わくは、あなたの神がソロモンの名をあなたの名よりも高くし、彼の位をあなたの位よりも大きくされますように』と言いました。そして王は床の上で拝されました。 |

And also thus said the king, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it. |
王はまたこう言われました、『イスラエルの神、主はほむべきかな。主はきょう、わたしの位に座するひとりの子を与えて、これをわたしに見せてくださった』と」。 |

And all the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way. |
その時アドニヤと共にいた客はみな驚き、立っておのおの自分の道に去って行った。 |

And Adonijah feared because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. |
そしてアドニヤはソロモンを恐れ、立って行って祭壇の角をつかんだ。 |
| 1-51 |
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon; for, lo, he hath laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me first that he will not slay his servant with the sword. |
ある人がこれをソロモンに告げて言った、「アドニヤはソロモンを恐れ、今彼は祭壇の角をつかんで、『どうぞ、ソロモン王がきょう、つるぎをもってしもべを殺さないとわたしに誓ってくださるように』と言っています」。 |

And Solomon said, If he shall show himself a worthy man, there shall not a hair of him fall to the earth; but if wickedness be found in him, he shall die. |
ソロモンは言った、「もし彼がよい人となるならば、その髪の毛ひとすじも地に落ちることはなかろう。しかし彼のうちに悪のあることがわかるならば、彼は死ななければならない」。 |

So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and did obeisance to king Solomon; and Solomon said unto him, Go to thy house. |
ソロモンは人をつかわして彼を祭壇からつれて下らせた。彼がきてソロモンを拝したので、ソロモンは彼に「家に帰りなさい」と言った。 |
