| 18-1 |
And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. |
多くの日を経て、三年目に主の言葉がエリヤに臨んだ、「行って、あなたの身をアハブに示しなさい。わたしは雨を地に降らせる」。 |

And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria. |

And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly: |

for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) |
イゼベルが主の預言者を断ち滅ぼした時、オバデヤは百人の預言者を救い出して五十人ずつほら穴に隠し、パンと水をもって彼らを養った）。 |
| 18-5 |
And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. |
アハブはオバデヤに言った、「国中のすべての水の源と、すべての川に行ってみるがよい。馬と騾馬を生かしておくための草があるかもしれない。そうすれば、われわれは家畜をいくぶんでも失わずにすむであろう」。 |

So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself. |
彼らは行き巡る地をふたりで分け、アハブはひとりでこの道を行き、オバデヤはひとりで他の道を行った。 |
| 18-7 |
And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah? |
オバデヤが道を進んでいた時、エリヤが彼に会った。彼はエリヤを認めて伏して言った、「わが主エリヤよ、あなたはここにおられるのですか」。 |

And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. |

And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? |

| 18-10 |
As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. |
あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの主人があなたを尋ねるために、人をつかわさない民はなく、国もありません。そしてエリヤはいないと言う時は、その国、その民に、あなたが見つからないという誓いをさせるのです。 |

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here . |
あなたは今『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。 |

And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth. |
しかしわたしがあなたを離れて行くと、主の霊はあなたを、わたしの知らない所へ連れて行くでしょう。わたしが行ってアハブに告げ、彼があなたを見つけることができなければ、彼はわたしを殺すでしょう。しかし、しもべは幼い時から主を恐れている者です。 |
| 18-13 |
Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? |
イゼベルが主の預言者を殺した時に、わたしがした事、すなわち、わたしが主の預言者のうち百人を五十人ずつほら穴に隠して、パンと水をもって養った事を、わが主は聞かれませんでしたか。 |

And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here ; and he will slay me. |
ところが今あなたは『行って、エリヤはここにいると主人に告げよ』と言われます。そのようなことをすれば彼はわたしを殺すでしょう」。 |
| 18-15 |
And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day. |
エリヤは言った、「わたしの仕える万軍の主は生きておられる。わたしは必ず、きょう、わたしの身を彼に示すであろう」。 |
| 18-16 |
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. |
オバデヤは行ってアハブに会い、彼に告げたので、アハブはエリヤに会おうとして行った。 |
| 18-17 |
And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel? |
アハブはエリヤを見たとき、彼に言った、「イスラエルを悩ます者よ、あなたはここにいるのですか」。 |
| 18-18 |
And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim. |
彼は答えた、「わたしがイスラエルを悩ますのではありません。あなたと、あなたの父の家が悩ましたのです。あなたがたが主の命令を捨て、バアルに従ったためです。 |
| 18-19 |
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table. |
それで今、人をつかわしてイスラエルのすべての人およびバアルの預言者四百五十人、ならびにアシラの預言者四百人、イゼベルの食卓で食事する者たちをカルメル山に集めて、わたしの所にこさせなさい」。 |
| 18-20 |
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. |
そこでアハブはイスラエルのすべての人に人をつかわして、預言者たちをカルメル山に集めた。 |
| 18-21 |
And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. |
そのときエリヤはすべての民に近づいて言った、「あなたがたはいつまで二つのものの間に迷っているのですか。主が神ならばそれに従いなさい。しかしバアルが神ならば、それに従いなさい」。民はひと言も彼に答えなかった。 |
| 18-22 |
Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. |
エリヤは民に言った、「わたしはただひとり残った主の預言者です。しかしバアルの預言者は四百五十人あります。 |
| 18-23 |
Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under. |
われわれに二頭の牛をください。そして一頭の牛を彼らに選ばせ、それを切り裂いて、たきぎの上に載せ、それに火をつけずにおかせなさい。わたしも一頭の牛を整え、それをたきぎの上に載せて火をつけずにおきましょう。 |

And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. |
こうしてあなたがたはあなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。わたしは主の名を呼びましょう。そして火をもって答える神を神としましょう」。民は皆答えて「それがよかろう」と言った。 |
| 18-25 |
And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under. |
そこでエリヤはバアルの預言者たちに言った、「あなたがたは大ぜいだから初めに一頭の牛を選んで、それを整え、あなたがたの神の名を呼びなさい。ただし火をつけてはなりません」。 |
| 18-26 |
And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made. |
彼らは与えられた牛を取って整え、朝から昼までバアルの名を呼んで「バアルよ、答えてください」と言った。しかしなんの声もなく、また答える者もなかったので、彼らは自分たちの造った祭壇のまわりに踊った。 |
| 18-27 |
And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked. |
昼になってエリヤは彼らをあざけって言った、「彼は神だから、大声をあげて呼びなさい。彼は考えにふけっているのか、よそへ行ったのか、旅に出たのか、または眠っていて起されなければならないのか」。 |

And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them. |
そこで彼らは大声に呼ばわり、彼らのならわしに従って、刀とやりで身を傷つけ、血をその身に流すに至った。 |

And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. |
こうして昼が過ぎても彼らはなお叫び続けて、夕の供え物をささげる時にまで及んだ。しかしなんの声もなく、答える者もなく、また顧みる者もなかった。 |

And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down. |
その時エリヤはすべての民にむかって「わたしに近寄りなさい」と言ったので、民は皆彼に近寄った。彼はこわれている主の祭壇を繕った。 |
| 18-31 |
And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name. |
そしてエリヤは昔、主の言葉がヤコブに臨んで、「イスラエルをあなたの名とせよ」と言われたヤコブの子らの部族の数にしたがって十二の石を取り、 |
| 18-32 |
And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. |
その石で主の名によって祭壇を築き、祭壇の周囲に種二セヤをいれるほどの大きさの、みぞを作った。 |
| 18-33 |
And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood. |
また、たきぎを並べ、牛を切り裂いてたきぎの上に載せて言った、「四つのかめに水を満たし、それを燔祭とたきぎの上に注げ」。 |
| 18-34 |
And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time. |
また言った、「それを二度せよ」。二度それをすると、また言った、「三度それをせよ」。三度それをした。 |
| 18-35 |
And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. |
水は祭壇の周囲に流れた。またみぞにも水を満たした。 |
| 18-36 |
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. |
夕の供え物をささげる時になって、預言者エリヤは近寄って言った、「アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神、主よ、イスラエルでは、あなたが神であること、わたしがあなたのしもべであって、あなたの言葉に従ってこのすべての事を行ったことを、今日知らせてください。 |

Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. |
主よ、わたしに答えてください、わたしに答えてください。主よ、この民にあなたが神であること、またあなたが彼らの心を翻されたのであることを知らせてください」。 |
| 18-38 |
Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. |
そのとき主の火が下って燔祭と、たきぎと、石と、ちりとを焼きつくし、またみぞの水をなめつくした。 |
| 18-39 |
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God. |
民は皆見て、ひれ伏して言った、「主が神である。主が神である」。 |
| 18-40 |
and Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. |
エリヤは彼らに言った、「バアルの預言者を捕えよ。そのひとりも逃がしてはならない」。そこで彼らを捕えたので、エリヤは彼らをキション川に連れくだって、そこで彼らを殺した。 |
| 18-41 |
And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain. |
エリヤはアハブに言った、「大雨の音がするから、上って行って、食い飲みしなさい」。 |
| 18-42 |
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. |
アハブは食い飲みするために上っていった。しかしエリヤはカルメルの頂に登り、地に伏して顔をひざの間に入れていたが、 |

And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. |
彼はしもべに言った、「上っていって海の方を見なさい」。彼は上っていって、見て、「何もありません」と言ったので、エリヤは「もう一度行きなさい」と言って七度に及んだ。 |
| 18-44 |
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. |
七度目にしもべは言った、「海から人の手ほどの小さな雲が起っています」。エリヤは言った、「上っていって、『雨にとどめられないように車を整えて下れ』とアハブに言いなさい」。 |

And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel: |
すると間もなく、雲と風が起り、空が黒くなって大雨が降ってきた。アハブは車に乗ってエズレルへ行った。 |
| 18-46 |
and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. |
また主の手がエリヤに臨んだので、彼は腰をからげ、エズレルの入口までアハブの前に走っていった。 |
