| 20-1 |
And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together; and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it. |
スリヤの王ベネハダデはその軍勢をことごとく集めた。三十二人の王が彼と共におり、また馬と戦車もあった。彼は上ってサマリヤを囲み、これを攻めた。 |

And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad, |
また彼は町に使者をつかわし、イスラエルの王アハブに言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、 |

Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine. |
『あなたの金銀はわたしのもの、またあなたの妻たちと子供たちの最も美しい者もわたしのものです』」。 |
| 20-4 |
And the king of Israel answered and said, It is according to thy saying, my lord, O king; I am thine, and all that I have. |
イスラエルの王は答えた、「王、わが主よ、仰せのとおり、わたしと、わたしの持ち物は皆あなたのものです」。 |
| 20-5 |
And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, I sent indeed unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children; |
使者は再びきて言った、「ベネハダデはこう申します、『わたしはさきに人をつかわして、あなたの金銀、妻子を引きわたせと言いました。 |

but I will send my servants unto thee to-morrow about this time, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away. |
しかし、あすの今ごろ、しもべたちをあなたにつかわします。彼らはあなたの家と、あなたの家来の家を探って、すべて彼らの気にいる物を手に入れて奪い去るでしょう』」。 |

Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not. |
そこでイスラエルの王は国の長老をことごとく召して言った、「よく注意して、この人が無理な事を求めているのを知りなさい。彼は人をつかわして、わたしの妻子と金銀を求めたが、わたしはそれを拒まなかった」。 |

And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken thou not, neither consent. |
すべての長老および民は皆彼に言った、「聞いてはなりません。承諾してはなりません」。 |
| 20-9 |
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do; but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again. |
それで彼はベネハダデの使者に言った、「王、わが主に告げなさい。『あなたが初めに要求されたことは皆いたしましょう。しかし今度の事はできません』」。使者は去って復命した。 |

And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me. |
ベネハダデは彼に人をつかわして言った、「もしサマリヤのちりが、わたしに従うすべての民の手を満たすに足りるならば、神々がどんなにでも、わたしを罰してくださるように」。 |
| 20-11 |
And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his armor boast himself as he that putteth it off. |
イスラエルの王は答えた、「『武具を帯びる者は、それを脱ぐ者のように誇ってはならない』と告げなさい」。 |
| 20-12 |
And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city. |
ベネハダデは仮小屋で、王たちと酒を飲んでいたが、この事を聞いて、その家来たちに言った、「戦いの備えをせよ」。彼らは町にむかって戦いの備えをした。 |

And, behold, a prophet came near unto Ahab king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thy hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am Jehovah. |
この時ひとりの預言者がイスラエルの王アハブのもとにきて言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『あなたはこの大軍を見たか。わたしはきょう、これをあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを、知るようになるであろう』」。 |
| 20-14 |
And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, By the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall begin the battle? And he answered, Thou. |
アハブは言った、「だれにさせましょうか」。彼は言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『地方の代官の家来たちにさせよ』」。アハブは言った、「だれが戦いを始めましょうか」。彼は答えた、「あなたです」。 |
| 20-15 |
Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two: and after them he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand. |
そこでアハブは地方の代官の家来たちを調べたところ二百三十二人あった。次にすべての民、すなわちイスラエルのすべての人を調べたところ七千人あった。 |
| 20-16 |
And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. |
彼らは昼ごろ出ていったが、ベネハダデは仮小屋で、味方の三十二人の王たちと共に酒を飲んで酔っていた。 |

And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out from Samaria. |
地方の代官の家来たちが先に出ていった。ベネハダデは斥候をつかわしたが、彼らは「サマリヤから人々が出てきた」と報告したので、 |

And he said, Whether they are come out for peace, take them alive, or whether they are come out for war, taken them alive. |
彼は言った、「和解のために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ。また戦いのために出てきたのであっても、生どりにせよ」。 |
| 20-19 |
So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. |
地方の代官の家来たちと、それに従う軍勢が町から出ていって、 |

And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen. |
おのおのその相手を撃ち殺したので、スリヤびとは逃げた。イスラエルはこれを追ったが、スリヤの王ベネハダデは馬に乗り、騎兵を従えてのがれた。 |

And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter. |
イスラエルの王は出ていって、馬と戦車をぶんどり、また大いにスリヤびとを撃ち殺した。 |
| 20-22 |
And the prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee. |
時に、かの預言者がイスラエルの王のもとにきて言った、「行って、力を養い、なすべき事をよく考えなさい。来年の春にはスリヤの王が、あなたのところに攻め上ってくるからです」。 |
| 20-23 |
And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we: but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. |
スリヤの王の家来たちは王に言った、「彼らの神々は山の神ですから彼らがわれわれよりも強かったのです。もしわれわれが平地で戦うならば、必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう。 |
| 20-24 |
And do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their room; |
それでこうしなさい。王たちをおのおのその地位から退かせ、総督を置いてそれに代らせなさい。 |
| 20-25 |
and number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot; and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so. |
またあなたが失った軍勢に等しい軍勢を集め、馬は馬、戦車は戦車をもって補いなさい。こうしてわれわれが平地で戦うならば必ず彼らよりも強いでしょう」。彼はその言葉を聞きいれて、そのようにした。 |

And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel. |
春になって、ベネハダデはスリヤびとを集めて、イスラエルと戦うために、アペクに上ってきた。 |

And the children of Israel were mustered, and were victualled, and went against them: and the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country. |
イスラエルの人々は召集され、糧食を受けて彼らを迎え撃つために出かけた。イスラエルの人々はやぎの二つの小さい群れのように彼らの前に陣取ったが、スリヤびとはその地に満ちていた。 |

And a man of God came near and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, Because the Syrians have said, Jehovah is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys; therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and ye shall know that I am Jehovah. |
その時神の人がきて、イスラエルの王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『スリヤびとが、主は山の神であって、谷の神ではないと言っているから、わたしはこのすべての大軍をあなたの手にわたす。あなたは、わたしが主であることを知るようになるであろう』」。 |
| 20-29 |
And they encamped one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day. |
彼らは七日の間、互にむかいあって陣取り、七日目になって戦いを交えたが、イスラエルの人々は一日にスリヤびとの歩兵十万人を殺した。 |

But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber. |
そのほかの者はアペクの町に逃げこんだが、城壁がくずれて、その残った二万七千人の上に倒れた。ベネハダデは逃げて町に入り、奥の間にはいった。 |

And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, we pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life. |
家来たちは彼に言った、「イスラエルの家の王たちはあわれみ深い王であると聞いています。それでわれわれの腰に荒布をつけ、くびになわをかけて、イスラエルの王の所へ行かせてください。たぶん彼はあなたの命を助けるでしょう」。 |
| 20-32 |
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother. |
そこで彼らは荒布を腰にまき、なわをくびにかけてイスラエルの王の所へ行って言った、「あなたのしもべベネハダデが『どうぞ、わたしの命を助けてください』と申しています」。アハブは言った、「彼はまだ生きているのですか。彼はわたしの兄弟です」。 |

Now the men observed diligently, and hasted to catch whether it were his mind; and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot. |
その人々はこれを吉兆としてすみやかに彼の言葉をうけ、「そうです。ベネハダデはあなたの兄弟です」と言ったので、彼は言った、「行って彼をつれてきなさい」。それでベネハダデは彼の所に出てきたので、彼はこれを自分の車に乗せた。 |
| 20-34 |
And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities which my father took from thy father I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. And I, said Ahab, will let thee go with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and let him go. |
ベネハダデは彼に言った、「わたしの父が、あなたの父上から取った町々は返します。またわたしの父がサマリヤに造ったように、あなたはダマスコに、あなたのために市場を設けなさい」。アハブは言った、「わたしはこの契約をもってあなたを帰らせましょう」。こうしてアハブは彼と契約を結び、彼を帰らせた。 |

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his fellow by the word of Jehovah, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him. |
さて預言者のともがらのひとりが主の言葉に従ってその仲間に言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。しかしその人は撃つことを拒んだので、 |

Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him. |
彼はその人に言った、「あなたは主の言葉に聞き従わないゆえ、わたしを離れて行くとすぐ、ししがあなたを殺すでしょう」。その人が彼のそばを離れて行くとすぐ、ししが彼に会って彼を殺した。 |
| 20-37 |
Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, smiting and wounding him. |
彼はまたほかの人に会って言った、「どうぞ、わたしを撃ってください」。するとその人は彼を撃ち、撃って傷つけた。 |
| 20-38 |
So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes. |
こうしてその預言者は行って、道のかたわらで王を待ち、目にほうたいを当てて姿を変えていた。 |

And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king; and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver. |
王が通り過ぎる時、王に呼ばわって言った、「しもべはいくさの中に出て行きましたが、ある軍人が、ひとりの人をわたしの所につれてきて言いました、『この人を守っていなさい。もし彼がいなくなれば、あなたの命を彼の命に代えるか、または銀一タラントを払わなければならない』。 |

And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it. |
ところが、しもべはあちらこちらと忙しくしていたので、ついに彼はいなくなりました」。イスラエルの王は彼に言った、「あなたはそのとおりにさばかれなければならない。あなたが自分でそれを定めたのです」。 |
| 20-41 |
And he hasted, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of israel discerned him that he was of the prophets. |
そこで彼が急いで目のほうたいを取り除いたので、イスラエルの王はそれが預言者のひとりであることを知った。 |

And he said unto him, Thus saith Jehovah, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people. |
彼は王に言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『わたしが滅ぼそうと定めた人を、あなたは自分の手から放して行かせたので、あなたの命は彼の命に代り、あなたの民は彼の民に代るであろう』と」。 20:43イスラエルの王は悲しみ、かつ怒って自分の家におもむき、サマリヤに帰った。 |
