| 13-1 |
On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God for ever, |
その日モーセの書を読んで民に聞かせたが、その中にアンモンびと、およびモアブびとは、いつまでも神の会に、はいってはならないとしるされているのを見いだした。 |

because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, to curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing. |
これは彼らがかつて、パンと水をもってイスラエルの人々を迎えず、かえってこれをのろわせるためにバラムを雇ったからである。しかしわれわれの神はそののろいを変えて祝福とされた。 |

And it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude. |
人々はこの律法を聞いた時、混血の民をことごとくイスラエルから分け離した。 |
| 13-4 |
Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being allied unto Tobiah, |
これより先、われわれの神の宮のへやをつかさどっていた祭司エリアシブは、トビヤと縁組したので、 |
| 13-5 |
had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave-offerings for the priests. |
トビヤのために大きなへやを備えた。そのへやはもと、素祭の物、乳香、器物および規定によってレビびと、歌うたう者および門を守る者たちに与える穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一、ならびに祭司のためのささげ物を置いた所である。 |

But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king, |
その当時、わたしはエルサレムにいなかった。わたしはバビロンの王アルタシャスタの三十二年に王の所へ行ったが、しばらくたって王にいとまを請い、 |

and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. |
エルサレムに来て、エリアシブがトビヤのためにした悪事、すなわち彼のために神の宮の庭に一つのへやを備えたことを発見した。 |
| 13-8 |
And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. |
わたしは非常に怒り、トビヤの家の器物をことごとくそのへやから投げだし、 |

Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal-offerings and the frankincense. |
命じて、すべてのへやを清めさせ、そして神の宮の器物および素祭、乳香などを再びそこに携え入れた。 |
| 13-10 |
And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. |
わたしはまたレビびとがその受くべき分を与えられていなかったことを知った。これがためにその務をなすレビびとおよび歌うたう者たちは、おのおの自分の畑に逃げ帰った。 |

Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. |
それでわたしはつかさたちを責めて言った、「なぜ神の宮を捨てさせたのか」。そしてレビびとを招き集めて、その持ち場に復帰させた。 |
| 13-12 |
Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries. |
そこでユダの人々は皆、穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一を倉に携えてきた。 |
| 13-13 |
And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren. |
わたしは祭司シレミヤ、学者ザドクおよびレビびとペダヤを倉のつかさとし、またマッタニヤの子ザックルの子ハナンをその助手として倉をつかさどらせた。彼らは忠実な者と思われたからである。彼らの任務は兄弟たちに分配する事であった。 |

Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the observances thereof. |
わが神よ、この事のためにわたしを覚えてください。わが神の宮とその勤めのためにわたしが行った良きわざをぬぐい去らないでください。 |
| 13-15 |
In those days saw I in Judah some men treading wine-presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses therewith; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. |
そのころわたしはユダのうちで安息日に酒ぶねを踏む者、麦束を持ってきて、ろばに負わす者、またぶどう酒、ぶどう、いちじくおよびさまざまの荷を安息日にエルサレムに運び入れる者を見たので、わたしは彼らが食物を売っていたその日に彼らを戒めた。 |

There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought in fish, and all manner of wares, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. |
そこに住んでいたツロの人々もまた魚およびさまざまの品物を持ってきて、安息日にユダの人々に売り、エルサレムで商売した。 |
| 13-17 |
Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? |
そこでわたしはユダの尊い人々を責めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜこの悪事を行って、安息日を汚すのか。 |
| 13-18 |
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. |
あなたがたの先祖も、このように行ったので、われわれの神はこのすべての災を、われわれとこの町に下されたではないか。ところがあなたがたは安息日を汚して、さらに大いなる怒りをイスラエルの上に招くのである」。 |
| 13-19 |
And it came to pass that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. |
そこで安息日の前に、エルサレムのもろもろの門が暗くなり始めた時、わたしは命じてそのとびらを閉じさせ、安息日が終るまでこれを開いてはならないと命じ、わたしのしもべ数人を門に置いて、安息日に荷を携え入れさせないようにした。 |

So the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. |
これがために、商人およびさまざまの品物を売る者どもは一、二回エルサレムの外に宿った。 |
| 13-21 |
Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. |
わたしは彼らを戒めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜ城壁の前に宿るのか。もしあなたがたが重ねてそのようなことをするならば、わたしはあなたがたを処罰する」と。そのとき以来、彼らは安息日にはこなかった。 |
| 13-22 |
And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember unto me, O my God, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy lovingkindness. |
わたしはまたレビびとに命じて、その身を清めさせ、来て門を守らせて、安息日を聖別した。わが神よ、わたしのためにまた、このことを覚え、あなたの大いなるいつくしみをもって、わたしをあわれんでください。 |
| 13-23 |
In those days also saw I the Jews that had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: |
そのころまた、わたしはアシドド、アンモン、モアブの女をめとったユダヤ人を見た。 |
| 13-24 |
and their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people. |
彼らの子供の半分はアシドドの言葉を語って、ユダヤの言葉を語ることができず、おのおのその母親の出た民の言葉を語った。 |
| 13-25 |
And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying , Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves. |
わたしは彼らを責め、またののしり、そのうちの数人を撃って、その毛を抜き、神の名をさして誓わせて言った、「あなたがたは彼らのむすこに自分の娘を与えてはならない。またあなたがたのむすこ、またはあなたがた自身のために彼らの娘をめとってはならない。 |
| 13-26 |
Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin. |
イスラエルの王ソロモンはこれらのことによって罪を犯したではないか。彼のような王は多くの国民のうちにもなく、神に愛せられた者である。神は彼をイスラエル全国の王とせられた。ところが異邦の女たちは彼に罪を犯させた。 |
| 13-27 |
Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women? |
それゆえあなたがたが異邦の女をめとり、このすべての大いなる悪を行って、われわれの神に罪を犯すのを、われわれは聞き流しにしておけようか」。 |
| 13-28 |
And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me. |
大祭司エリアシブの子ヨイアダのひとりの子はホロニびとサンバラテの婿であったので、わたしは彼をわたしのところから追い出した。 |
| 13-29 |
Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. |
わが神よ、彼らのことを覚えてください。彼らは祭司の職を汚し、また祭司およびレビびとの契約を汚しました。 |
| 13-30 |
Thus cleansed I them from all foreigners, and appointed charges for the priests and for the Levites, every one in his work; |
このように、わたしは彼らを清めて、異邦のものをことごとく捨てさせ、祭司およびレビびとの務を定めて、おのおのそのわざにつかせた。 |
| 13-31 |
and for the wood-offering, at times appointed, and for the first-fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good. |
また定められた時に、たきぎの供え物をささげさせ、また初物をささげさせた。わが神よ、わたしを覚え、わたしをお恵みください。 |
