2-1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him, that I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. アルタシャスタ王の第二十年、ニサンの月に、王の前に酒が出た時、わたしは酒をついで王にささげた。これまでわたしは王の前で悲しげな顔をしていたことはなかった。
2-2 And the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid. 王はわたしに言われた、「あなたは病気でもないのにどうして悲しげな顔をしているのか。何か心に悲しみをもっているにちがいない」。そこでわたしは大いに恐れて、
2-3 And I said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? 王に申しあげた、「どうぞ王よ、長生きされますように。わたしの先祖の墳墓の地であるあの町は荒廃し、その門が火で焼かれたままであるのに、どうしてわたしは悲しげな顔をしないでいられましょうか」。
2-4 Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. 王はわたしにむかって、「それでは、あなたは何を願うのか」と言われたので、わたしは天の神に祈って、
2-5 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favor in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it. 王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされ、しもべがあなたの前に恵みを得ますならば、どうかわたしを、ユダにあるわたしの先祖の墳墓の町につかわして、それを再建させてください」。
2-6 And the king said unto me (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. 時に王妃もかたわらに座していたが、王はわたしに言われた、「あなたの旅の期間はどれほどですか。いつごろ帰ってきますか」。こうして王がわたしをつかわすことをよしとされたので、わたしは期間を定めて王に申しあげた。
2-7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through till I come unto Judah; わたしはまた王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされるならば、川向こうの州の知事たちに与える手紙をわたしに賜わり、わたしがユダに行きつくまで、彼らがわたしを通過させるようにしてください。
2-8 and a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the castle which appertaineth to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me. また王の山林を管理するアサフに与える手紙をも賜わり、神殿に属する城の門を建てるため、また町の石がき、およびわたしの住むべき家を建てるために用いる材木をわたしに与えるようにしてください」。わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたので、王はわたしの願いを許された。
2-9 Then I came to the governors beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen. そこでわたしは川向こうの州の知事たちの所へ行って、王の手紙を渡した。なお王は軍の長および騎兵をわたしと共につかわした。
2-10 And when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, for that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. ところがホロニびとサンバラテおよびアンモンびと奴隷トビヤはこれを聞き、イスラエルの子孫の福祉を求める人が来たというので、大いに感情を害した。
2-11 So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days. わたしはエルサレムに着いて、そこに三日滞在した後、
2-12 And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God put into my heart to do for Jerusalem; neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon. 夜中に起き出た。数人の者がわたしに伴ったが、わたしは、神がエルサレムのためになそうとして、わたしの心に入れられたことを、だれにも告げ知らせず、またわたしが乗った獣のほかには、獣をつれて行かなかった。
2-13 And I went out by night by the valley gate, even toward the jackal’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire. わたしは夜中に出て谷の門を通り、龍の井戸および糞の門に行って、エルサレムのくずれた城壁や、火に焼かれた門を調査し、
2-14 Then I went on to the fountain gate and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. また泉の門および王の池に行ったが、わたしの乗っている獣の通るべき所もなかった。
2-15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall; and I turned back, and entered by the valley gate, and so returned. わたしはまたその夜のうちに谷に沿って上り、城壁を調査したうえ、身をめぐらして、谷の門を通って帰った。
2-16 And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work. つかさたちは、わたしがどこへ行ったか、何をしたかを知らなかった。わたしはまたユダヤ人にも、祭司たちにも、尊い人たちにも、つかさたちにも、その他工事をする人々にもまだ知らせなかった。
2-17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach. しかしわたしはついに彼らに言った、「あなたがたの見るとおり、われわれは難局にある。エルサレムは荒廃し、その門は火に焼かれた。さあ、われわれは再び世のはずかしめをうけることのないように、エルサレムの城壁を築こう」。
2-18 And I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me, as also of the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work. そして、わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたことを彼らに告げ、また王がわたしに語られた言葉をも告げたので、彼らは「さあ、立ち上がって築こう」と言い、奮い立って、この良きわざに着手しようとした。
2-19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? ところがホロニびとサンバラテ、アンモンびと奴隷トビヤおよびアラビヤびとガシムがこれを聞いて、われわれをあざけり、われわれを侮って言った、「あなたがたは何をするのか、王に反逆しようとするのか」。
2-20 Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem. わたしは彼らに答えて言った、「天の神がわれわれを恵まれるので、そのしもべであるわれわれは奮い立って築くのである。しかしあなたがたはエルサレムに何の分もなく、権利もなく、記念もない」。
