Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. |
さて、ここに民がその妻と共に、その兄弟であるユダヤ人に向かって大いに叫び訴えることがあった。 |

For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get grain, that we may eat and live. |
すなわち、ある人々は言った、「われわれはむすこ娘と共に大ぜいです。われわれは穀物を得て、食べて生きていかなければなりません」。 |

Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get grain, because of the dearth. |
またある人々は言った、「われわれは飢えのために、穀物を得ようと田畑も、ぶどう畑も、家も抵当に入れています」。 |
| 5-4 |
There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. |
ある人々は言った、「われわれは王の税金のために、われわれの田畑およびぶどう畑をもって金を借りました。 |

Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already : neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards. |
現にわれわれの肉はわれわれの兄弟の肉に等しく、われわれの子供も彼らの子供に等しいのに、見よ、われわれはむすこ娘を人の奴隷とするようにしいられています。われわれの娘のうちには、すでに人の奴隷になった者もありますが、われわれの田畑も、ぶどう畑も他人のものになっているので、われわれにはどうする力もありません」。 |

And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. |

Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. |
わたしはみずから考えたすえ、尊い人々およびつかさたちを責めて言った、「あなたがたはめいめいその兄弟から利息をとっている」。そしてわたしは彼らの事について大会を開き、 |

And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that were sold unto the nations; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. |
彼らに言った、「われわれは異邦人に売られたわれわれの兄弟ユダヤ人を、われわれの力にしたがってあがなった。しかるにあなたがたは自分の兄弟を売ろうとするのか。彼らはわれわれに売られるのか」。彼らは黙してひと言もいわなかった。 |

Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies? |
わたしはまた言った、「あなたがたのする事はよくない。あなたがたは、われわれの敵である異邦人のそしりをやめさせるために、われわれの神を恐れつつ事をなすべきではないか。 |

And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, do lend them money and grain. I pray you, let us leave off this usury. |
わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、わたしのしもべたちも同じく金と穀物とを貸しているが、われわれはこの利息をやめよう。 |

Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. |
どうぞ、あなたがたは、きょうにも彼らの田畑、ぶどう畑、オリブ畑および家屋を彼らに返し、またあなたがたが彼らから取っていた金銭、穀物、ぶどう酒、油などの百分の一を返しなさい」。 |

Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they would do according to this promise. |
すると彼らは「われわれはそれを返します。彼らから何をも要求しません。あなたの言うようにします」と言った。そこでわたしは祭司たちを呼び、彼らにこの言葉のとおりに行うという誓いを立てさせた。 |

Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the assembly said, Amen, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise. |
わたしはまたわたしのふところを打ち払って言った、「この約束を実行しない者を、どうぞ神がこのように打ち払って、その家およびその仕事を離れさせられるように。その人はこのように打ち払われてむなしくなるように」。会衆はみな「アァメン」と言って、主をさんびした。そして民はこの約束のとおりに行った。 |

Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor. |
またわたしは、ユダの地の総督に任ぜられた時から、すなわちアルタシャスタ王の第二十年から第三十二年まで、十二年の間、わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、総督としての手当てを受けなかった。 |

But the former governors that were before me were chargeable unto the people, and took of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God. |
わたしより以前の総督らは民に重荷を負わせ、彼らから銀四十シケルのほかにパンとぶどう酒を取り、また彼らのしもべたちも民を圧迫した。しかしわたしは神を恐れるので、そのようなことはしなかった。 |

Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work. |
わたしはかえって、この城壁の工事に身をゆだね、どんな土地をも買ったことはない。わたしのしもべたちは皆そこに集まって工事をした。 |
| 5-17 |
Moreover there were at my table, of the Jews and the rulers, a hundred and fifty men, besides those that came unto us from among the nations that were round about us. |
またわたしの食卓にはユダヤ人と、つかさたち百五十人もあり、そのほかに、われわれの周囲の異邦人のうちからきた人々もあった。 |

Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I demanded not the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. |
これがために一日に牛一頭、肥えた羊六頭を備え、また鶏をもわたしのために備え、十日ごとにたくさんのぶどう酒を備えたが、わたしはこの民の労役が重かったので、総督としての手当てを求めなかった。 |

Remember unto me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people. |
わが神よ、わたしがこの民のためにしたすべての事を覚えて、わたしをお恵みください。 |
