17-1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, Than a house full of feasting with strife. 平穏であって、ひとかたまりのかわいたパンのあるのは、争いがあって、食物の豊かな家にまさる。
17-2 A servant that dealeth wisely shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, And shall have part in the inheritance among the brethren. 賢いしもべは身持の悪いむすこを治め、かつ、その兄弟たちの中にあって、資産の分け前を獲る。
17-3 The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; But Jehovah trieth the hearts. 銀を試みるものはるつぼ、金を試みるものは炉、人の心を試みるものは主である。
17-4 An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; And a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue. 悪を行う者は偽りのくちびるに聞き、偽りをいう者は悪しき舌に耳を傾ける。
17-5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker; And he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. 貧しい者をあざける者はその造り主を侮る、人の災を喜ぶ者は罰を免れない。
17-6 Children’s children are the crown of old men; And the glory of children are their fathers. 孫は老人の冠である、父は子の栄えである。
17-7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool; Much less do lying lips a prince. すぐれた言葉は愚かな者には似合わない、まして偽りを言うくちびるは君たる者には似合わない。
17-8 A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth. まいないはこれを贈る人の目には幸運の玉のようだ、その向かう所、どこでも彼は栄える。
17-9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; But he that harpeth on a matter separateth chief friends. 愛を追い求める人は人のあやまちをゆるす、人のことを言いふらす者は友を離れさせる。
17-10 A rebuke entereth deeper into one that hath understanding .Than a hundred stripes into a fool. 一度の戒めがさとき人に徹するのは、百度の懲しめが愚かな人に徹するよりも深い。
17-11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion; Therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. 悪しき者はただ、そむく事のみを求める、それゆえ、彼に向かっては残忍な使者がつかわされる。
17-12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, Rather than a fool in his folly. 愚かな者が愚かな事をするのに会うよりは、子をとられた雌ぐまに会うほうがよい。
17-13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, Evil shall not depart from his house. 悪をもて善に報いる者は、悪がその家を離れることがない。
17-14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling. 争いの初めは水がもれるのに似ている、それゆえ、けんかの起らないうちにそれをやめよ。
17-15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. 悪しき者を正しいとする者、正しい者を悪いとする者、この二つの者はともに主に憎まれる。
17-16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, Seeing he hath no understanding? 愚かな者はすでに心がないのに、どうして知恵を買おうとして手にその代金を持っているのか。
17-17 A friend loveth at all times; And a brother is born for adversity. 友はいずれの時にも愛する、兄弟はなやみの時のために生れる。
17-18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, And becometh surety in the presence of his neighbor. 知恵のない人は手をうって、その隣り人の前で保証をする。
17-19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: He that raiseth high his gate seeketh destruction. 争いを好む者は罪を好む、その門を高くする者は滅びを求める。
17-20 He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good; And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. 曲った心の者はさいわいを得ない、みだりに舌をもって語る者は災に陥る。
17-21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow; And the father of a fool hath no joy. 愚かな子を生む者は嘆きを得る、愚か者の父は喜びを得ない。
17-22 A cheerful heart is a good medicine; But a broken spirit drieth up the bones. 心の楽しみは良い薬である、たましいの憂いは骨を枯らす。
17-23 A wicked man receiveth a bribe out of the bosom, To pervert the ways of justice. 悪しき者は人のふところからまいないを受けて、さばきの道をまげる。
17-24 Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding; But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. さとき者はその顔を知恵にむける、しかし、愚かな者は目を地の果にそそぐ。
17-25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her that bare him. 愚かな子はその父の憂いである、またこれを産んだ母の痛みである。
17-26 Also to punish the righteous is not good, Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness. 正しい人を罰するのはよくない、尊い人を打つのは悪い。
17-27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge; And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding. 言葉を少なくする者は知識のある者、心の冷静な人はさとき人である。
17-28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; When he shutteth his lips, he is esteemed as prudent. 愚かな者も黙っているときは、知恵ある者と思われ、そのくちびるを閉じている時は、さとき者と思われる。
