6-1 My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor, If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger; わが子よ、あなたがもし隣り人のために保証人となり、他人のために手をうって誓ったならば、
6-2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. もしあなたのくちびるの言葉によって、わなにかかり、あなたの口の言葉によって捕えられたならば、
6-3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor: Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor; わが子よ、その時はこうして、おのれを救え、あなたは隣り人の手に陥ったのだから。急いで行って、隣り人にひたすら求めよ。
6-4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, Nor slumber to thine eyelids; あなたの目を眠らせず、あなたのまぶたを、まどろませず、
6-5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler. かもしかが、かりゅうどの手からのがれるように、鳥が鳥を取る者の手からのがれるように、
おのれを救え。
6-6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise: なまけ者よ、ありのところへ行き、そのすることを見て、知恵を得よ。
6-7 Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler, ありは、かしらなく、つかさなく、王もないが、
6-8 Provideth her bread in the summer, And gathereth her food in the harvest. 夏のうちに食物をそなえ、刈入れの時に、かてを集める。
6-9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? なまけ者よ、いつまで寝ているのか、いつ目をさまして起きるのか。
6-10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to sleep: しばらく眠り、しばらくまどろみ、手をこまぬいて、またしばらく休む。
6-11 So shall thy poverty come as a robber, And thy want as an armed man. それゆえ、貧しさは盗びとのようにあなたに来り、乏しさは、つわもののようにあなたに来る。
6-12 A worthless person, a man of iniquity, Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth; よこしまな人、悪しき人は偽りの言葉をもって行きめぐり、
6-13 That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet, That maketh signs with his fingers; 目でめくばせし、足で踏み鳴らし、指で示し、
6-14 In whose heart is perverseness, Who deviseth evil continually, Who soweth discord. よこしまな心をもって悪を計り、絶えず争いをおこす。
6-15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy. それゆえ、災は、にわかに彼に臨み、たちまちにして打ち敗られ、助かることはない。
6-16 There are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: 主の憎まれるものが六つある、否、その心に、忌みきらわれるものが七つある。
6-17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood; すなわち、高ぶる目、偽りを言う舌、罪なき人の血を流す手、
6-18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief, 悪しき計りごとをめぐらす心、すみやかに悪に走る足、
6-19 A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren. 偽りをのべる証人、また兄弟のうちに争いをおこす人がこれである。
6-20 My son, keep the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the law of thy mother: わが子よ、あなたの父の戒めを守り、あなたの母の教を捨てるな。
6-21 Bind them continually upon thy heart; Tie them about thy neck. つねに、これをあなたの心に結び、あなたの首のまわりにつけよ。
6-22 When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; When thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. これは、あなたが歩くとき、あなたを導き、あなたが寝るとき、あなたを守り、あなたが目ざめるとき、あなたと語る。
6-23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; And reproofs of instruction are the way of life: 戒めはともしびである、教は光である、教訓の懲しめは命の道である。
6-24 To keep thee from the evil woman, From the flattery of the foreigner’s tongue. これは、あなたを守って、悪い女に近づかせず、みだらな女の、巧みな舌に惑わされぬようにする。
6-25 Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; Neither let her take thee with her eyelids. 彼女の麗しさを心に慕ってはならない、そのまぶたに捕えられてはならない。
6-26 For on account of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread; And the adulteress hunteth for the precious life. 遊女は一塊のパンのために雇われる、しかし、みだらな女は人の尊い命を求める。
6-27 Can a man take fire in his bosom, And his clothes not be burned? 人は火を、そのふところにいだいてその着物が焼かれないであろうか。
6-28 Or can one walk upon hot coals, And his feet not be scorched? また人は、熱い火を踏んで、その足が、焼かれないであろうか。
6-29 So he that goeth in to his neighbor’s wife; Whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished. その隣の妻と不義を行う者も、それと同じだ。すべて彼女に触れる者は罰を免れることはできない。
6-30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal .To satisfy himself when he is hungry: 盗びとが飢えたとき、その飢えを満たすために盗むならば、人は彼を軽んじないであろうか。
6-31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; He shall give all the substance of his house. もし捕えられたなら、その七倍を償い、その家の貨財を、ことごとく出さなければならない。
6-32 He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: He doeth it who would destroy his own soul. 女と姦淫を行う者は思慮がない。これを行う者はおのれを滅ぼし、
6-33 Wounds and dishonor shall he get; And his reproach shall not be wiped away. 傷と、はずかしめとを受けて、その恥をすすぐことができない。
6-34 For jealousy is the rage of a man; And he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ねたみは、その夫を激しく怒らせるゆえ、恨みを報いるとき、容赦することはない。
6-35 He will not regard any ransom; Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. どのようなあがない物をも顧みず、多くの贈り物をしても、和らがない。
