１-１ Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 神の御旨によるキリスト・イエスの使徒パウロと兄弟テモテから、
１-２ To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ that are at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. コロサイにいる、キリストにある聖徒たち、忠実な兄弟たちへ。わたしたちの父なる神から、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。
１-３ We give thanks to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, わたしたちは、いつもあなたがたのために祈り、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの父なる神に感謝している。
１-４ having heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have toward all the saints, これは、キリスト・イエスに対するあなたがたの信仰と、すべての聖徒に対していだいているあなたがたの愛とを、耳にしたからである。
１-５ because of the hope which is laid up for you in the heavens, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, この愛は、あなたがたのために天にたくわえられている望みに基くものであり、その望みについては、あなたがたはすでに、あなたがたのところまで伝えられた福音の真理の言葉によって聞いている。
１-６ which is come unto you; even as it is also in all the world bearing fruit and increasing, as it doth in you also, since the day ye heard and knew the grace of God in truth; そして、この福音は、世界中いたる所でそうであるように、あなたがたのところでも、これを聞いて神の恵みを知ったとき以来、実を結んで成長しているのである。
１-７ even as ye learned of Epaphras our beloved fellow-servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, あなたがたはこの福音を、わたしたちと同じ僕である、愛するエペフラスから学んだのであった。彼はあなたがたのためのキリストの忠実な奉仕者であって、
１-８ who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. あなたがたが御霊によっていだいている愛を、わたしたちに知らせてくれたのである。
１-９ For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray and make request for you, that ye may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, そういうわけで、これらの事を耳にして以来、わたしたちも絶えずあなたがたのために祈り求めているのは、あなたがたがあらゆる霊的な知恵と理解力とをもって、神の御旨を深く知り、
１-１０ to walk worthily of the Lord unto all pleasing, bearing fruit in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 主のみこころにかなった生活をして真に主を喜ばせ、あらゆる良いわざを行って実を結び、神を知る知識をいよいよ増し加えるに至ることである。
１-１１ strengthened with all power, according to the might of his glory, unto all patience and longsuffering with joy; 更にまた祈るのは、あなたがたが、神の栄光の勢いにしたがって賜わるすべての力によって強くされ、何事も喜んで耐えかつ忍び、
１-１２ giving thanks unto the Father, who made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; 光のうちにある聖徒たちの特権にあずかるに足る者とならせて下さった父なる神に、感謝することである。
１-１３ who delivered us out of the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of the Son of his love; 神は、わたしたちをやみの力から救い出して、その愛する御子の支配下に移して下さった。
１-１４ in whom we have our redemption, the forgiveness of our sins: わたしたちは、この御子によってあがない、すなわち、罪のゆるしを受けているのである。
１-１５ who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 御子は、見えない神のかたちであって、すべての造られたものに先だって生れたかたである。
１-１６ for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; 万物は、天にあるものも地にあるものも、見えるものも見えないものも、位も主権も、支配も権威も、みな御子にあって造られたからである。これらいっさいのものは、御子によって造られ、御子のために造られたのである。
１-１７ and he is before all things, and in him all things consist. 彼は万物よりも先にあり、万物は彼にあって成り立っている。
１-１８ And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. そして自らは、そのからだなる教会のかしらである。彼は初めの者であり、死人の中から最初に生れたかたである。それは、ご自身がすべてのことにおいて第一の者となるためである。
１-１９ For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fulness dwell; 神は、御旨によって、御子のうちにすべての満ちみちた徳を宿らせ、
１-２０ and through him to reconcile all things unto himself, having made peace through the blood of his cross; through him, I say, whether things upon the earth, or things in the heavens. そして、その十字架の血によって平和をつくり、万物、すなわち、地にあるもの、天にあるものを、ことごとく、彼によってご自分と和解させて下さったのである。
１-２１ And you, being in time past alienated and enemies in your mind in your evil works, あなたがたも、かつては悪い行いをして神から離れ、心の中で神に敵対していた。
１-２２ yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and without blemish and unreproveable before him: しかし今では、御子はその肉のからだにより、その死をとおして、あなたがたを神と和解させ、あなたがたを聖なる、傷のない、責められるところのない者として、みまえに立たせて下さったのである。
１-２３ if so be that ye continue in the faith, grounded and stedfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel which ye heard, which was preached in all creation under heaven; whereof I Paul was made a minister. ただし、あなたがたは、ゆるぐことがなく、しっかりと信仰にふみとどまり、すでに聞いている福音の望みから移り行くことのないようにすべきである。この福音は、天の下にあるすべての造られたものに対して宣べ伝えられたものであって、それにこのパウロが奉仕しているのである。
１-２４ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church; 今わたしは、あなたがたのための苦難を喜んで受けており、キリストのからだなる教会のために、キリストの苦しみのなお足りないところを、わたしの肉体をもって補っている。
１-２５ whereof I was made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which was given me to you-ward, to fulfil the word of God, わたしは、神の言を告げひろめる務を、あなたがたのために神から与えられているが、そのために教会に奉仕する者になっているのである。
１-２６ even the mystery which hath been hid for ages and generations: but now hath it been manifested to his saints, その言の奥義は、代々にわたってこの世から隠されていたが、今や神の聖徒たちに明らかにされたのである。
１-２７ to whom God was pleased to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: 神は彼らに、異邦人の受くべきこの奥義が、いかに栄光に富んだものであるかを、知らせようとされたのである。この奥義は、あなたがたのうちにいますキリストであり、栄光の望みである。
１-２８ whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ; わたしたちはこのキリストを宣べ伝え、知恵をつくしてすべての人を訓戒し、また、すべての人を教えている。それは、彼らがキリストにあって全き者として立つようになるためである。
１-２９ whereunto I labor also, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. わたしはこのために、わたしのうちに力強く働いておられるかたの力により、苦闘しながら努力しているのである。
