４-１ Let a man so account of us, as of ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God. このようなわけだから、人はわたしたちを、キリストに仕える者、神の奥義を管理している者と見るがよい。
４-２ Here, moreover, it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. この場合、管理者に要求されているのは、忠実であることである。
４-３ But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man’s judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. わたしはあなたがたにさばかれたり、人間の裁判にかけられたりしても、なんら意に介しない。いや、わたしは自分をさばくこともしない。
４-４ For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. わたしは自ら省みて、なんらやましいことはないが、それで義とされているわけではない。わたしをさばくかたは、主である。
４-５ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God. だから、主がこられるまでは、何事についても、先走りをしてさばいてはいけない。主は暗い中に隠れていることを明るみに出し、心の中で企てられていることを、あらわにされるであろう。その時には、神からそれぞれほまれを受けるであろう。
４-６ Now these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other. 兄弟たちよ。これらのことをわたし自身とアポロとに当てはめて言って聞かせたが、それはあなたがたが、わたしたちを例にとって、「しるされている定めを越えない」ことを学び、ひとりの人をあがめ、ほかの人を見さげて高ぶることのないためである。
４-７ For who maketh thee to differ? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? but if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it? いったい、あなたを偉くしているのは、だれなのか。あなたの持っているもので、もらっていないものがあるか。もしもらっているなら、なぜもらっていないもののように誇るのか。
４-８ Already are ye filled, already ye are become rich, ye have come to reign without us: yea and I would that ye did reign, that we also might reign with you. あなたがたは、すでに満腹しているのだ。すでに富み栄えているのだ。わたしたちを差しおいて、王になっているのだ。ああ、王になっていてくれたらと思う。そうであったなら、わたしたちも、あなたがたと共に王になれたであろう。
４-９ For, I think, God hath set forth us the apostles last of all, as men doomed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, both to angels and men. わたしはこう考える。神はわたしたち使徒を死刑囚のように、最後に出場する者として引き出し、こうしてわたしたちは、全世界に、天使にも人々にも見せ物にされたのだ。
４-１０ We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye have glory, but we have dishonor. わたしたちはキリストのゆえに愚かな者となり、あなたがたはキリストにあって賢い者となっている。わたしたちは弱いが、あなたがたは強い。あなたがたは尊ばれ、わたしたちは卑しめられている。
４-１１ Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place; 今の今まで、わたしたちは飢え、かわき、裸にされ、打たれ、宿なしであり、
４-１２ and we toil, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; 苦労して自分の手で働いている。はずかしめられては祝福し、迫害されては耐え忍び、
４-１３ being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now. ののしられては優しい言葉をかけている。わたしたちは今に至るまで、この世のちりのように、人間のくずのようにされている。
４-１４ I write not these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children. わたしがこのようなことを書くのは、あなたがたをはずかしめるためではなく、むしろ、わたしの愛児としてさとすためである。
４-１５ For though ye have ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I begat you through the gospel. たといあなたがたに、キリストにある養育掛が一万人あったとしても、父が多くあるのではない。キリスト・イエスにあって、福音によりあなたがたを生んだのは、わたしなのである。
４-１６ I beseech you therefore, be ye imitators of me. そこで、あなたがたに勧める。わたしにならう者となりなさい。
４-１７ For this cause have I sent unto you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, who shall put you in remembrance of my ways which are in Christ, even as I teach everywhere in every church. このことのために、わたしは主にあって愛する忠実なわたしの子テモテを、あなたがたの所につかわした。彼は、キリスト・イエスにおけるわたしの生活のしかたを、わたしが至る所の教会で教えているとおりに、あなたがたに思い起させてくれるであろう。
４-１８ Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. しかしある人々は、わたしがあなたがたの所に来ることはあるまいとみて、高ぶっているということである。
４-１９ But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will; and I will know, not the word of them that are puffed up, but the power. しかし主のみこころであれば、わたしはすぐにでもあなたがたの所に行って、高ぶっている者たちの言葉ではなく、その力を見せてもらおう。
４-２０ For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. 神の国は言葉ではなく、力である。
４-２１ What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness? あなたがたは、どちらを望むのか。わたしがむちをもって、あなたがたの所に行くことか、それとも、愛と柔和な心とをもって行くことであるか。
