９-１ Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not ye my work in the Lord? わたしは自由な者ではないか。使徒ではないか。わたしたちの主イエスを見たではないか。あなたがたは、主にあるわたしの働きの実ではないか。
９-２ If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. わたしは、ほかの人に対しては使徒でないとしても、あなたがたには使徒である。あなたがたが主にあることは、わたしの使徒職の印なのである。
９-３ My defence to them that examine me is this. わたしの批判者たちに対する弁明は、これである。
９-４ Have we no right to eat and to drink? わたしたちには、飲み食いをする権利がないのか。
９-５ Have we no right to lead about a wife that is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? わたしたちには、ほかの使徒たちや主の兄弟たちやケパのように、信者である妻を連れて歩く権利がないのか。
９-６ Or I only and Barnabas, have we not a right to forbear working? それとも、わたしとバルナバとだけには、労働をせずにいる権利がないのか。
９-７ What soldier ever serveth at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not the fruit thereof? Or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? いったい、自分で費用を出して軍隊に加わる者があろうか。ぶどう畑を作っていて、その実を食べない者があろうか。また、羊を飼っていて、その乳を飲まない者があろうか。
９-８ Do I speak these things after the manner of men? or saith not the law also the same? わたしは、人間の考えでこう言うのではない。律法もまた、そのように言っているではないか。
９-９ For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn. Is it for the oxen that God careth, すなわち、モーセの律法に、「穀物をこなしている牛に、くつこをかけてはならない」と書いてある。神は、牛のことを心にかけておられるのだろうか。
９-１０ or saith he it assuredly for our sake? Yea, for our sake it was written: because he that ploweth ought to plow in hope, and he that thresheth, to thresh in hope of partaking. それとも、もっぱら、わたしたちのために言っておられるのか。もちろん、それはわたしたちのためにしるされたのである。すなわち、耕す者は望みをもって耕し、穀物をこなす者は、その分け前をもらう望みをもってこなすのである。
９-１１ If we sowed unto you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we shall reap your carnal things? もしわたしたちが、あなたがたのために霊のものをまいたのなら、肉のものをあなたがたから刈りとるのは、行き過ぎだろうか。
９-１２ If others partake of this right over you, do not we yet more? Nevertheless we did not use this right; but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ. もしほかの人々が、あなたがたに対するこの権利にあずかっているとすれば、わたしたちはなおさらのことではないか。しかしわたしたちは、この権利を利用せず、かえってキリストの福音の妨げにならないようにと、すべてのことを忍んでいる。
９-１３ Know ye not that they that minister about sacred things eat of the things of the temple, and they that wait upon the altar have their portion with the altar? あなたがたは、宮仕えをしている人たちは宮から下がる物を食べ、祭壇に奉仕している人たちは祭壇の供え物の分け前にあずかることを、知らないのか。
９-１４ Even so did the Lord ordain that they that proclaim the gospel should live of the gospel. それと同様に、主は、福音を宣べ伝えている者たちが福音によって生活すべきことを、定められたのである。
９-１５ But I have used none of these things: and I write not these things that it may be so done in my case; for it were good for me rather to die, than that any man should make my glorifying void. しかしわたしは、これらの権利を一つも利用しなかった。また、自分がそうしてもらいたいから、このように書くのではない。そうされるよりは、死ぬ方がましである。わたしのこの誇は、何者にも奪い去られてはならないのだ。
９-１６ For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of; for necessity is laid upon me; for woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel. わたしが福音を宣べ伝えても、それは誇にはならない。なぜなら、わたしは、そうせずにはおれないからである。もし福音を宣べ伝えないなら、わたしはわざわいである。
９-１７ For if I do this of mine own will, I have a reward: but if not of mine own will, I have a stewardship intrusted to me. 進んでそれをすれば、報酬を受けるであろう。しかし、進んでしないとしても、それは、わたしにゆだねられた務なのである。
９-１８ What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel without charge, so as not to use to the full my right in the gospel. それでは、その報酬はなんであるか。福音を宣べ伝えるのにそれを無代価で提供し、わたしが宣教者として持つ権利を利用しないことである。
９-１９ For though I was free from all men, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more. わたしは、すべての人に対して自由であるが、できるだけ多くの人を得るために、自ら進んですべての人の奴隷になった。
９-２０ And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, not being myself under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; ユダヤ人には、ユダヤ人のようになった。ユダヤ人を得るためである。律法の下にある人には、わたし自身は律法の下にはないが、律法の下にある者のようになった。律法の下にある人を得るためである。
９-２１ to them that are without law, as without law, not being without law to God, but under law to Christ, that I might gain them that are without law. 律法のない人には――わたしは神の律法の外にあるのではなく、キリストの律法の中にあるのだが――律法のない人のようになった。律法のない人を得るためである。
９-２２ To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak: I am become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some. 弱い人には弱い者になった。弱い人を得るためである。すべての人に対しては、すべての人のようになった。なんとかして幾人かを救うためである。
９-２３ And I do all things for the gospel’s sake, that I may be a joint partaker thereof. 福音のために、わたしはどんな事でもする。わたしも共に福音にあずかるためである。
９-２４ Know ye not that they that run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? Even so run; that ye may attain. あなたがたは知らないのか。競技場で走る者は、みな走りはするが、賞を得る者はひとりだけである。あなたがたも、賞を得るように走りなさい。
９-２５ And every man that striveth in the games exerciseth self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. しかし、すべて競技をする者は、何ごとにも節制をする。彼らは朽ちる冠を得るためにそうするが、わたしたちは朽ちない冠を得るためにそうするのである。
９-２６ I therefore so run, as not uncertainly; so fight I, as not beating the air: そこで、わたしは目標のはっきりしないような走り方をせず、空を打つような拳闘はしない。
９-２７ but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage: lest by any means, after that I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected. すなわち、自分のからだを打ちたたいて服従させるのである。そうしないと、ほかの人に宣べ伝えておきながら、自分は失格者になるかも知れない。
