Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence,
even of your pleasures that war in your members? |
あなたがたの中の戦いや争いは、いったい、どこから起るのか。それはほかではない。あなたがたの肢体の中で相戦う欲情からではないか。 |

Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight
and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. |
あなたがたは、むさぼるが得られない。そこで人殺しをする。熱望するが手に入れることができない。そこで争い戦う。あなたがたは、求めないから得られないのだ。 |

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in
your pleasures. |
求めても与えられないのは、快楽のために使おうとして、悪い求め方をするからだ。 |

Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity
with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself
an enemy of God. |
不貞のやからよ。世を友とするのは、神への敵対であることを、知らないか。おおよそ世の友となろうと思う者は、自らを神の敵とするのである。 |

Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which
he made to dwell in us long unto envying? |
それとも、「神は、わたしたちの内に住まわせた霊を、ねたむほどに愛しておられる」と聖書に書いてあるのは、むなしい言葉だと思うのか。 |

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth
the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. |
しかし神は、いや増しに恵みを賜う。であるから、「神は高ぶる者をしりぞけ、へりくだる者に恵みを賜う」とある。 |

Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. |
そういうわけだから、神に従いなさい。そして、悪魔に立ちむかいなさい。そうすれば、彼はあなたがたから逃げ去るであろう。 |

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye
sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. |
神に近づきなさい。そうすれば、神はあなたがたに近づいて下さるであろう。罪人どもよ、手をきよめよ。二心の者どもよ、心を清くせよ。 |

Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning,
and your joy to heaviness. |
苦しめ、悲しめ、泣け。あなたがたの笑いを悲しみに、喜びを憂いに変えよ。 |

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you. |
主のみまえにへりくだれ。そうすれば、主は、あなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。 |

Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother,
or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law:
but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. |
兄弟たちよ。互に悪口を言い合ってはならない。兄弟の悪口を言ったり、自分の兄弟をさばいたりする者は、律法をそしり、律法をさばくやからである。もしあなたが律法をさばくなら、律法の実行者ではなくて、その審判者なのである。 |

One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to
destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor? |
しかし、立法者であり審判者であるかたは、ただひとりであって、救うことも滅ぼすこともできるのである。しかるに、隣り人をさばくあなたは、いったい、何者であるか。 |

Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and
spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: |
よく聞きなさい。「きょうか、あす、これこれの町へ行き、そこに一か年滞在し、商売をして一もうけしよう」と言う者たちよ。 |

whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For
ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. |
あなたがたは、あすのこともわからぬ身なのだ。あなたがたのいのちは、どんなものであるか。あなたがたは、しばしの間あらわれて、たちまち消え行く霧にすぎない。 |

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do
this or that. |
むしろ、あなたがたは「主のみこころであれば、わたしは生きながらえもし、あの事この事もしよう」と言うべきである。 |

But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. |
ところが、あなたがたは誇り高ぶっている。このような高慢は、すべて悪である。 |
| ４-１７ |
To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is
sin. |
人が、なすべき善を知りながら行わなければ、それは彼にとって罪である。 |
