１-１ Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and the Saviour Jesus Christ: イエス・キリストの僕また使徒であるシメオン・ペテロから、わたしたちの神と救主イエス・キリストとの義によって、わたしたちと同じ尊い信仰を授かった人々へ。
１-２ Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 神とわたしたちの主イエスとを知ることによって、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたに豊かに加わるように。
１-３ seeing that his divine power hath granted unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that called us by his own glory and virtue; いのちと信心とにかかわるすべてのことは、主イエスの神聖な力によって、わたしたちに与えられている。それは、ご自身の栄光と徳とによって、わたしたちを召されたかたを知る知識によるのである。
１-４ whereby he hath granted unto us his precious and exceeding great promises; that through these ye may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in that world by lust. また、それらのものによって、尊く、大いなる約束が、わたしたちに与えられている。それは、あなたがたが、世にある欲のために滅びることを免れ、神の性質にあずかる者となるためである。
１-５ Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge; それだから、あなたがたは、力の限りをつくして、あなたがたの信仰に徳を加え、徳に知識を、
１-６ and in your knowledge self-control; and in your self-control patience; and in your patience godliness; 知識に節制を、節制に忍耐を、忍耐に信心を、
１-７ and in your godliness brotherly kindness; and in your brotherly kindness love. 信心に兄弟愛を、兄弟愛に愛を加えなさい。
１-８ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. これらのものがあなたがたに備わって、いよいよ豊かになるならば、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストを知る知識について、あなたがたは、怠る者、実を結ばない者となることはないであろう。
１-９ For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. これらのものを備えていない者は、盲人であり、近視の者であり、自分の以前の罪がきよめられたことを忘れている者である。
１-１０ Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble: 兄弟たちよ。それだから、ますます励んで、あなたがたの受けた召しと選びとを、確かなものにしなさい。そうすれば、決してあやまちに陥ることはない。
１-１１ for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. こうして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの永遠の国に入る恵みが、あなたがたに豊かに与えられるからである。
１-１２ Wherefore I shall be ready always to put you in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and are established in the truth which is with you. それだから、あなたがたは既にこれらのことを知っており、また、いま持っている真理に堅く立ってはいるが、わたしは、これらのことをいつも、あなたがたに思い起させたいのである。
１-１３ And I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; わたしがこの幕屋にいる間、あなたがたに思い起させて、奮い立たせることが適当と思う。
１-１４ knowing that the putting off of my tabernacle cometh swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ signified unto me. それは、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストもわたしに示して下さったように、わたしのこの幕屋を脱ぎ去る時が間近であることを知っているからである。
１-１５ Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my decease to call these things to remembrance. わたしが世を去った後にも、これらのことを、あなたがたにいつも思い出させるように努めよう。
１-１６ For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの力と来臨とを、あなたがたに知らせた時、わたしたちは、巧みな作り話を用いることはしなかった。わたしたちが、そのご威光の目撃者なのだからである。
１-１７ For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when there was borne such a voice to him by the Majestic Glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: イエスは父なる神からほまれと栄光とをお受けになったが、その時、おごそかな栄光の中から次のようなみ声がかかったのである、「これはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。
１-１８ and this voice we ourselves heard borne out of heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount. わたしたちもイエスと共に聖なる山にいて、天から出たこの声を聞いたのである。
１-１９ And we have the word of prophecy made more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: こうして、預言の言葉は、わたしたちにいっそう確実なものになった。あなたがたも、夜が明け、明星がのぼって、あなたがたの心の中を照すまで、この預言の言葉を暗やみに輝くともしびとして、それに目をとめているがよい。
１-２０ knowing this first, that no prophecy of scripture is of private interpretation. 聖書の預言はすべて、自分勝手に解釈すべきでないことを、まず第一に知るべきである。
１-２１ For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. なぜなら、預言は決して人間の意志から出たものではなく、人々が聖霊に感じ、神によって語ったものだからである。
