11-1 I say then, Did God cast off his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. そこで、わたしは問う、「神はその民を捨てたのであろうか」。断じてそうではない。わたしもイスラエル人であり、アブラハムの子孫、ベニヤミン族の者である。
11-2 God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel: 神は、あらかじめ知っておられたその民を、捨てることはされなかった。聖書がエリヤについてなんと言っているか、あなたがたは知らないのか。すなわち、彼はイスラエルを神に訴えてこう言った。
11-3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 「主よ、彼らはあなたの預言者たちを殺し、あなたの祭壇をこぼち、そして、わたしひとりが取り残されたのに、彼らはわたしのいのちをも求めています」。
11-4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal. しかし、彼に対する御告げはなんであったか、「バアルにひざをかがめなかった七千人を、わたしのために残しておいた」。
11-5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. それと同じように、今の時にも、恵みの選びによって残された者がいる。
11-6 But if it is by grace, it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. しかし、恵みによるのであれば、もはや行いによるのではない。そうでないと、恵みはもはや恵みでなくなるからである。
11-7 What then? that which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened: では、どうなるのか。イスラエルはその追い求めているものを得ないで、ただ選ばれた者が、それを得た。そして、他の者たちはかたくなになった。
11-8 according as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this very day. 「神は、彼らに鈍い心と、見えない目と、聞えない耳とを与えて、きょう、この日に及んでいる」と書いてあるとおりである。
11-9 And David saith,Let their table be made a snare, and a trap,And a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them: ダビデもまた言っている、「彼らの食卓は、彼らのわなとなれ、網となれ、つまずきとなれ、報復となれ。
11-10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see,And bow thou down their back always. 彼らの目は、くらんで見えなくなれ、彼らの背は、いつまでも曲っておれ」。
11-11 I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. そこで、わたしは問う、「彼らがつまずいたのは、倒れるためであったのか」。断じてそうではない。かえって、彼らの罪過によって、救が異邦人に及び、それによってイスラエルを奮起させるためである。
11-12 Now if their fall, is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? しかし、もし、彼らの罪過が世の富となり、彼らの失敗が異邦人の富となったとすれば、まして彼らが全部救われたなら、どんなにかすばらしいことであろう。
11-13 But I speak to you that are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I glorify my ministry; そこでわたしは、あなたがた異邦人に言う。わたし自身は異邦人の使徒なのであるから、わたしの務を光栄とし、
11-14 if by any means I may provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh, and may save some of them. どうにかしてわたしの骨肉を奮起させ、彼らの幾人かを救おうと願っている。
11-15 For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? もし彼らの捨てられたことが世の和解となったとすれば、彼らの受けいれられることは、死人の中から生き返ることではないか。
11-16 And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump: and if the root is holy, so are the branches. もし、麦粉の初穂がきよければ、そのかたまりもきよい。もし根がきよければ、その枝もきよい。
11-17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree; しかし、もしある枝が切り去られて、野生のオリブであるあなたがそれにつがれ、オリブの根の豊かな養分にあずかっているとすれば、
11-18 glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee. あなたはその枝に対して誇ってはならない。たとえ誇るとしても、あなたが根をささえているのではなく、根があなたをささえているのである。
11-19 Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. すると、あなたは、「枝が切り去られたのは、わたしがつがれるためであった」と言うであろう。
11-20 Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear: まさに、そのとおりである。彼らは不信仰のゆえに切り去られ、あなたは信仰のゆえに立っているのである。高ぶった思いをいだかないで、むしろ恐れなさい。
11-21 for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will he spare thee. もし神が元木の枝を惜しまなかったとすれば、あなたを惜しむようなことはないであろう。
11-22 Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God’s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 神の慈愛と峻厳とを見よ。神の峻厳は倒れた者たちに向けられ、神の慈愛は、もしあなたがその慈愛にとどまっているなら、あなたに向けられる。そうでないと、あなたも切り取られるであろう。
11-23 And they also, if they continue not in their unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. しかし彼らも、不信仰を続けなければ、つがれるであろう。神には彼らを再びつぐ力がある。
11-24 For if thou wast cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and wast grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree? なぜなら、もしあなたが自然のままの野生のオリブから切り取られ、自然の性質に反して良いオリブにつがれたとすれば、まして、これら自然のままの良い枝は、もっとたやすく、元のオリブにつがれないであろうか。
11-25 For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in; 兄弟たちよ。あなたがたが知者だと自負することのないために、この奥義を知らないでいてもらいたくない。一部のイスラエル人がかたくなになったのは、異邦人が全部救われるに至る時までのことであって、
11-26 and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written,There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer;He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: こうして、イスラエル人は、すべて救われるであろう。すなわち、次のように書いてある、「救う者がシオンからきて、ヤコブから不信心を追い払うであろう。
11-27 And this is my covenant unto them,When I shall take away their sins. そして、これが、彼らの罪を除き去る時に、彼らに対して立てるわたしの契約である」。
11-28 As touching the gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake. 福音について言えば、彼らは、あなたがたのゆえに、神の敵とされているが、選びについて言えば、父祖たちのゆえに、神に愛せられる者である。
11-29 For the gifts and the calling of God are not repented of. 神の賜物と召しとは、変えられることがない。
11-30 For as ye in time past were disobedient to God, but now have obtained mercy by their disobedience, あなたがたが、かつては神に不従順であったが、今は彼らの不従順によってあわれみを受けたように、
11-31 even so have these also now been disobedient, that by the mercy shown to you they also may now obtain mercy. 彼らも今は不従順になっているが、それは、あなたがたの受けたあわれみによって、彼ら自身も今あわれみを受けるためなのである。
11-32 For God hath shut up all unto disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all. すなわち、神はすべての人をあわれむために、すべての人を不従順のなかに閉じ込めたのである。
11-33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! ああ深いかな、神の知恵と知識との富は。そのさばきは窮めがたく、その道は測りがたい。
11-34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 「だれが、主の心を知っていたか。だれが、主の計画にあずかったか。
11-35 or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? また、だれが、まず主に与えて、その報いを受けるであろうか」。
11-36 For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen. 万物は、神からいで、神によって成り、神に帰するのである。栄光がとこしえに神にあるように、アァメン。
