7-1 Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth? それとも、兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは知らないのか。わたしは律法を知っている人々に語るのであるが、律法は人をその生きている期間だけ支配するものである。
7-2 For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband. すなわち、夫のある女は、夫が生きている間は、律法によって彼につながれている。しかし、夫が死ねば、夫の律法から解放される。
7-3 So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man. であるから、夫の生存中に他の男に行けば、その女は淫婦と呼ばれるが、もし夫が死ねば、その律法から解かれるので、他の男に行っても、淫婦とはならない。
7-4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God. わたしの兄弟たちよ。このように、あなたがたも、キリストのからだをとおして、律法に対して死んだのである。それは、あなたがたが他の人、すなわち、死人の中からよみがえられたかたのものとなり、こうして、わたしたちが神のために実を結ぶに至るためなのである。
7-5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. というのは、わたしたちが肉にあった時には、律法による罪の欲情が、死のために実を結ばせようとして、わたしたちの肢体のうちに働いていた。
7-6 But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter. しかし今は、わたしたちをつないでいたものに対して死んだので、わたしたちは律法から解放され、その結果、古い文字によってではなく、新しい霊によって仕えているのである。
7-7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet: それでは、わたしたちは、なんと言おうか。律法は罪なのか。断じてそうではない。しかし、律法によらなければ、わたしは罪を知らなかったであろう。すなわち、もし律法が「むさぼるな」と言わなかったら、わたしはむさぼりなるものを知らなかったであろう。
7-8 but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead. しかるに、罪は戒めによって機会を捕え、わたしの内に働いて、あらゆるむさぼりを起させた。すなわち、律法がなかったら、罪は死んでいるのである。
7-9 And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died; わたしはかつては、律法なしに生きていたが、戒めが来るに及んで、罪は生き返り、
7-10 and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death: わたしは死んだ。そして、いのちに導くべき戒めそのものが、かえってわたしを死に導いて行くことがわかった。
7-11 for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me. なぜなら、罪は戒めによって機会を捕え、わたしを欺き、戒めによってわたしを殺したからである。
7-12 So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good. このようなわけで、律法そのものは聖なるものであり、戒めも聖であって、正しく、かつ善なるものである。
7-13 Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful. では、善なるものが、わたしにとって死となったのか。断じてそうではない。それはむしろ、罪の罪たることが現れるための、罪のしわざである。すなわち、罪は、戒めによって、はなはだしく悪性なものとなるために、善なるものによってわたしを死に至らせたのである。
7-14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. わたしたちは、律法は霊的なものであると知っている。しかし、わたしは肉につける者であって、罪の下に売られているのである。
7-15 For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do. わたしは自分のしていることが、わからない。なぜなら、わたしは自分の欲する事は行わず、かえって自分の憎む事をしているからである。
7-16 But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good. もし、自分の欲しない事をしているとすれば、わたしは律法が良いものであることを承認していることになる。
7-17 So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. そこで、この事をしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である。
7-18 For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not. わたしの内に、すなわち、わたしの肉の内には、善なるものが宿っていないことを、わたしは知っている。なぜなら、善をしようとする意志は、自分にあるが、それをする力がないからである。
7-19 For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise. すなわち、わたしの欲している善はしないで、欲していない悪は、これを行っている。
7-20 But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. もし、欲しないことをしているとすれば、それをしているのは、もはやわたしではなく、わたしの内に宿っている罪である。
7-21 I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present. そこで、善をしようと欲しているわたしに、悪がはいり込んでいるという法則があるのを見る。
7-22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: すなわち、わたしは、内なる人としては神の律法を喜んでいるが、
7-23 but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. わたしの肢体には別の律法があって、わたしの心の法則に対して戦いをいどみ、そして、肢体に存在する罪の法則の中に、わたしをとりこにしているのを見る。
7-24 Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? わたしは、なんというみじめな人間なのだろう。だれが、この死のからだから、わたしを救ってくれるだろうか。
7-25 thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって、神は感謝すべきかな。このようにして、わたし自身は、心では神の律法に仕えているが、肉では罪の律法に仕えているのである。
