19-1 When Jehovah thy God shall cut off the nations, whose land Jehovah thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses; あなたの神、主が国々の民を滅ぼしつくして、あなたの神、主がその地を賜わり、あなたがそれを獲て、その町々と、その家々に住むようになる時は、
19-2 thou shalt set apart three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it. あなたの神、主が与えて獲させられる地のうちに、三つの町をあなたのために指定しなければならない。
19-3 Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the borders of thy land, which Jehovah thy God causeth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee thither. そしてそこに行く道を備え、またあなたの神、主があなたに継がせられる地の領域を三区に分け、すべて人を殺した者をそこにのがれさせなければならない。
19-4 And this is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee thither and live: whoso killeth his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in time past; 人を殺した者がそこにのがれて、命を全うすべき場合は次のとおりである。すなわち以前から憎むこともないのに、知らないでその隣人を殺した場合、
19-5 as when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbor, so that he dieth; he shall flee unto one of these cities and live: たとえば人が木を切ろうとして、隣人と一緒に林に入り、手におのを取って、木を切り倒そうと撃ちおろすとき、その頭が柄から抜け、隣人にあたって、死なせたような場合がそれである。そういう人はこれらの町の一つにのがれて、命を全うすることができる。
19-6 lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past. そうしなければ、復讐する者が怒って、その殺した者を追いかけ、道が長いために、ついに追いついて殺すであろう。しかし、その人は以前から彼を憎んでいた者でないから、殺される理由はない。
19-7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt set apart three cities for thee. それでわたしはあなたに命じて『三つの町をあなたのために指定しなければならない』と言ったのである。
19-8 And if Jehovah thy God enlarge thy border, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; あなたの神、主が先祖たちに誓われたように、あなたの領域を広め、先祖たちに与えると言われた地を、ことごとく賜わる時、――
19-9 if thou shalt keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love Jehovah thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, besides these three: わたしが、きょう、命じるこのすべての戒めを守って、それをおこない、あなたの神、主を愛して、常にその道に歩む時――あなたはこれら三つの町のほかに、また三つの町をあなたのために増し加えなければならない。
19-10 that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which Jehovah thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee. これはあなたの神、主が与えて嗣業とされる地のうちで、罪のない者の血が流されないようにするためである。そうしなければ、その血を流したとがは、あなたに帰するであろう。
19-11 But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally so that he dieth, and he flee into one of these cities; しかし、もし人が隣人を憎んでそれをつけねらい、立ちかかってその人を撃ち殺し、そしてこれらの町の一つにのがれるならば、
19-12 then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. その町の長老たちは人をつかわして彼をそこから引いてこさせ、復讐する者にわたして殺させなければならない。
19-13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee. 彼をあわれんではならない。罪のない者の血を流したとがを、イスラエルから除かなければならない。そうすればあなたにさいわいがあるであろう。
19-14 Thou shalt not remove thy neighbor’s landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that Jehovah thy God giveth thee to possess it. あなたの神、主が与えて獲させられる地で、あなたが継ぐ嗣業において、先祖の定めたあなたの隣人の土地の境を移してはならない。
19-15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be established. どんな不正であれ、どんなとがであれ、すべて人の犯す罪は、ただひとりの証人によって定めてはならない。ふたりの証人の証言により、または三人の証人の証言によって、その事を定めなければならない。
19-16 If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrong-doing, もし悪意のある証人が起って、人に対して悪い証言をすることがあれば、
19-17 then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days; その相争うふたりの者は主の前に行って、その時の祭司と裁判人の前に立たなければならない。
19-18 and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and have testified falsely against his brother; その時、裁判人は詳細にそれを調べなければならない。そしてその証人がもし偽りの証人であって、兄弟にむかって偽りの証言をした者であるならば、
19-19 then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to do unto his brother: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee. あなたがたは彼が兄弟にしようとしたことを彼に行い、こうしてあなたがたのうちから悪を除き去らなければならない。
19-20 And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee. そうすれば他の人たちは聞いて恐れ、その後ふたたびそのような悪をあなたがたのうちに行わないであろう。
19-21 And thine eyes shall not pity; life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. あわれんではならない。命には命、目には目、歯には歯、手には手、足には足をもって償わせなければならない。
