2-1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea, as Jehovah spake unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days. それから、われわれは身をめぐらし、主がわたしに告げられたように、紅海の方に向かって荒野に進み入り、日久しくセイル山を行きめぐっていたが、
2-2 And Jehovah spake unto me, saying, 主はわたしに言われた、
2-3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward. 『あなたがたは既に久しくこの山を行きめぐっているが、身をめぐらして北に進みなさい。
2-4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore; おまえはまた民に命じて言え、「あなたがたは、エサウの子孫、すなわちセイルに住んでいるあなたがたの兄弟の領内を通ろうとしている。彼らはあなたがたを恐れるであろう。それゆえ、あなたがたはみずから深く慎み、
2-5 contend not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession. 彼らと争ってはならない。彼らの地は、足の裏で踏むほどでも、あなたがたに与えないであろう。わたしがセイル山をエサウに与えて、領地とさせたからである。
2-6 Ye shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink. あなたがたは彼らから金で食物を買って食べ、また金で水を買って飲まなければならない。
2-7 For Jehovah thy God hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; he hath known thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. あなたの神、主が、あなたのするすべての事において、あなたを恵み、あなたがこの大いなる荒野を通るのを、見守られたからである。あなたの神、主がこの四十年の間、あなたと共におられたので、あなたは何も乏しいことがなかった」』。
2-8 So we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion-geber.And we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. こうしてわれわれは、エサウの子孫でセイルに住んでいる兄弟を離れ、アラバの道を避け、エラテとエジオン・ゲベルを離れて進んだ。われわれは転じて、モアブの荒野の方に向かって進んだ。
2-9 And Jehovah said unto me, Vex not Moab, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession. その時、主はわたしに言われた、『モアブを敵視してはならない。またそれと争い戦ってはならない。彼らの地は、領地としてあなたに与えない。ロトの子孫にアルを与えて、領地とさせたからである。
2-10 (The Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim: （むかし、エミびとがこの所に住んでいた。この民は大いなる民であって、数も多く、アナクびとのように背も高く、
2-11 these also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim. またアナクびとと同じくレパイムであると、みなされていたが、モアブびとは、これをエミびとと呼んでいた。
2-12 The Horites also dwelt in Seir aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them; and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which Jehovah gave unto them.) ホリびとも、むかしはセイルに住んでいたが、エサウの子孫がこれを追い払い、これを滅ぼし、彼らに代ってそこに住んだ。主が賜わった所有の地に、イスラエルがおこなったのと同じである。）
2-13 Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered. あなたがたは、いま、立ちあがってゼレデ川を渡りなさい』。そこでわれわれはゼレデ川を渡った。
2-14 And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as Jehovah sware unto them. カデシ・バルネアを出てこのかた、ゼレデ川を渡るまでの間の日は三十八年であって、その世代のいくさびとはみな死に絶えて、宿営のうちにいなくなった。主が彼らに誓われたとおりである。
2-15 Moreover the hand of Jehovah was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp, until they were consumed. まことに主の手が彼らを攻め、宿営のうちから滅ぼし去られたので、彼らはついに死に絶えた。
2-16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, いくさびとがみな民のうちから死に絶えたとき、
2-17 that Jehovah spake unto me, saying, 主はわたしに言われた、
2-18 Thou art this day to pass over Ar, the border of Moab: 『おまえは、きょう、モアブの領地アルを通ろうとしている。
2-19 and when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, vex them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession. アンモンの子孫に近づく時、おまえは彼らを敵視してはならない。また争ってはならない。わたしはアンモンの子孫の地を領地として、おまえに与えない。それをロトの子孫に領地として与えたからである。
2-20 (That also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, （これもまたレパイムの国とみなされた。むかし、レパイムがここに住んでいたからである。しかし、アンモンびとは彼らをザムズミびとと呼んだ。
2-21 a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakim; but Jehovah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead; この民は大いなる民であって数も多く、アナクびとのように背も高かったが、主はアンモンびとの前から、これを滅ぼされ、アンモンびとがこれを追い払って、彼らに代ってそこに住んだ。
2-22 as he did for the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: この事は、セイルに住んでいるエサウの子孫のためにその前から、ホリびとを滅ぼされたのと同じである。彼らはホリびとを追い払い、これに代って今日までそこに住んでいる。
2-23 and the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.) またカフトルから出たカフトルびとは、ガザにまで及ぶ村々に住んでいたアビびとを滅ぼして、これに代ってそこに住んでいる。）
2-24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon: behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. あなたがたは立ちあがり、進んでアルノン川を渡りなさい。わたしはヘシボンの王アモリびとシホンとその国とを、おまえの手に渡した。それを征服し始めよ。彼と争って戦え。
2-25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear the report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee. きょうから、わたしは全天下の民に、おまえをおびえ恐れさせるであろう。彼らはおまえのうわさを聞いて震え、おまえのために苦しむであろう』。
2-26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, そこでわたしは、ケデモテの荒野から、ヘシボンの王シホンに使者をつかわし、平和の言葉を述べさせた。
2-27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the highway, I will turn neither unto the right hand nor to the left. 『あなたの国を通らせてください。わたしは大路をとおっていきます、右にも左にも曲りません。
2-28 Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only let me pass through on my feet, 金で食物を売ってわたしに食べさせ、金をとって水を与えてわたしに飲ませてください。徒歩で通らせてくださるだけでよいのです。
2-29 ?as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God giveth us. セイルに住むエサウの子孫と、アルに住むモアブびとが、わたしにしたようにしてください。そうすれば、わたしはヨルダンを渡って、われわれの神、主が賜わる地に行きます』。
2-30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as at this day. しかし、ヘシボンの王シホンは、われわれを通らせるのを好まなかった。あなたの神、主が彼をあなたの手に渡すため、その気を強くし、その心をかたくなにされたからである。今日見るとおりである。
2-31 And Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land. 時に主はわたしに言われた、『わたしはシホンと、その地とを、おまえに渡し始めた。おまえはそれを征服しはじめ、その地を自分のものとせよ』。
2-32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz. そこでシホンは、われわれを攻めようとして、その民をことごとく率い、出てきてヤハズで戦ったが、
2-33 And Jehovah our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. われわれの神、主が彼を渡されたので、われわれは彼とその子らと、そのすべての民とを撃ち殺した。
2-34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, with the women and the little ones; we left none remaining: その時、われわれは彼のすべての町を取り、そのすべての町の男、女および子供を全く滅ぼして、ひとりをも残さなかった。
2-35 only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken. ただその家畜は、われわれが取った町々のぶんどり物と共に、われわれが獲て自分の物とした。
2-36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and from the city that is in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; Jehovah our God delivered up all before us: アルノンの谷のほとりにあるアロエルおよび谷の中にある町からギレアデに至るまで、われわれが攻めて取れなかった町は一つもなかった。われわれの神、主がことごとくわれわれに渡されたのである。
2-37 only to the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not near; all the side of the river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill-country, and wheresoever Jehovah our God forbade us. ただアンモンの子孫の地、すなわちヤボク川の全岸、および山地の町々、またすべてわれわれの神、主が禁じられた所には近寄らなかった。
