Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel prophesied they unto them. |
さて預言者ハガイおよびイドの子ゼカリヤのふたりの預言者は、ユダとエルサレムにいるユダヤ人に向かって、彼らの上にいますイスラエルの神の名によって預言した。 |

Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. |
そこでシャルテルの子ゼルバベルおよびヨザダクの子エシュアは立ちあがって、エルサレムにある神の宮を建て始めた。神の預言者たちも、彼らと共にいて彼らを助けた。 |

At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? |
その時、川向こうの州の知事タテナイおよびセタル・ボズナイとその同僚は彼らの所に来てこう言った、「だれがあなたがたにこの宮を建て、この城壁を築きあげることを命じたのか」。 |

Then we told them after this manner, what the names of the men were that were making this building. |
また「この建物を建てている人々の名はなんというのか」と尋ねた。 |

But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. |
しかしユダヤ人の長老たちの上には、神の目が注がれていたので、彼らはこれをやめさせることができず、その事をダリヨスに奏して、その返答の来るのを待った。 |

The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king; |
川向こうの州の知事タテナイおよびセタル・ボズナイとその同僚である川向こうの州の知事たちが、ダリヨス王に送った手紙の写しは次のとおりである。 |

they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: Unto Darius the king, all peace. |
すなわち、彼らが王に送った手紙には、次のようにしるされてあった。「願わくはダリヨス王に全き平安があるように。 |

Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls; and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands. |
王に次のことをお知らせいたします。すなわち、われわれがユダヤ州へ行き、かの大いなる神の宮へ行って見たところ、それは大きな石をもって建てられ、材木を組んで壁をつくり、その工事は勤勉に行われ、彼らの手によって大いにはかどっています。 |

Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? |
そこでわれわれはその長老たちに尋ねてこう言いました、『だれがあなたがたにこの宮を建て、この城壁を築きあげることを命じたのか』と。 |

We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them. |
われわれはまた彼らのかしらたる人々の名を書きしるして、あなたにお知らせするために、その名を尋ねました。 |

And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and are building the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished. |
すると、彼らはわれわれに答えてこう言いました、『われわれは天地の神のしもべであって、年久しい昔に建てられた宮を、再び建てるのです。これはもと、イスラエルの大いなる王の建てあげたものですが、 |

But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. |
われわれの先祖たちが、天の神の怒りを引き起したため、神は彼らを、カルデヤびとバビロンの王ネブカデネザルの手に渡されたので、彼はこの宮をこわし、民をバビロンに捕えて行きました。 |

But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. |
ところがバビロンの王クロスの元年に、クロス王は神のこの宮を再び建てることの命令を下されました。 |

And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; |
またクロス王は先にネブカデネザルが、エルサレムの宮からバビロンの神殿に移した神の宮の金銀の器を、バビロンの神殿から取り出して、彼が総督に任じたセシバザルという名の者に渡して、 |

and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place. |
彼に言われました、「これらの器を携えて行って、エルサレムにある宮に納め、神の宮をもとの所に建てよ」と。 |

Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed. |
そこでこのセシバザルは来てエルサレムにある神の宮の基礎をすえました。その時から今に至るまで、建築を続けていますが、まだ完成しないのです』と。 |

Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter. |
それで今、もし王がよしと見られるならば、バビロンにある王の宝庫を調べて、エルサレムの神のこの宮を建てることの命令が、はたしてクロス王から出ているかどうかを確かめ、この事についての王のお考えをわれわれに伝えてください」。 |
