10-1 Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: イスラエルの家よ、主のあなたがたに語られる言葉を聞け。
10-2 thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them. 主はこう言われる、「異邦の人の道に習ってはならない。また異邦の人が天に現れるしるしを恐れても、あなたがたはそれを恐れてはならない。
10-3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe. 異邦の民のならわしはむなしいからだ。彼らの崇拝するものは、林から切りだした木で、木工の手で、おのをもって造ったものだ。
10-4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. 人々は銀や金をもって、それを飾り、くぎと鎚をもって動かないようにそれをとめる。
10-5 They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good. その偶像は、きゅうり畑のかかしのようで、ものを言うことができない。歩くこともできないから、人に運んでもらわなければならない。それを恐れるに及ばない。それは災をくだすことができず、また幸をくだす力もないからだ」。
10-6 There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. 主よ、あなたに並びうる者はありません。あなたは大いなる者であり、あなたの名もその力のために大いなるものであります。
10-7 Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee. 万国の王であるあなたを、恐れない者がありましょうか。あなたを恐れるのは当然のことであります。万国のすべての知恵ある者のうちにも、その国々のうちにも、あなたに並びうる者はありません。
10-8 But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock. 彼らは皆、愚かで鈍く、偶像の教は、ただ木にすぎない。
10-9 There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men. 銀ぱくはタルシシから渡来し、金はウパズから携えてくる。これらは工人と金細工人の工作である。彼らの着物はすみれ色と紫色である。これらはみな巧みな細工人の作った物である。
10-10 But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation. しかし主はまことの神である。生きた神であり、永遠の王である。その怒りによって地は震いうごき、万国はその憤りに当ることができない。
10-11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens. あなたがたは彼らに、こう言わなければならない、「天地を造らなかった神々は地の上、天の下から滅び去る」と。
10-12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens: 主はその力をもって地を造り、その知恵をもって世界を建て、その悟りをもって天をのべられた。
10-13 when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries. 彼が声を出されると、天に多くの水のざわめきがあり、また地の果から霧を立ちあがらせられる。彼は雨のために、いなびかりをおこし、その倉から風を取り出される。
10-14 Every man is become brutish and is without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. すべての人は愚かで知恵がなく、すべての金細工人はその造った偶像のために恥をこうむる。その偶像は偽り物で、そのうちに息がないからだ。
10-15 They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. これらは、むなしいもので、迷いのわざである。罰せられる時に滅びるものである。
10-16 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name. ヤコブの分である彼はこのようなものではない。彼は万物の造り主だからである。イスラエルは彼の嗣業としての部族である。彼の名を万軍の主という。
10-17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege. 囲みの中におる者よ、あなたの包を地から取り上げよ。
10-18 For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel it. 主がこう言われるからだ、「見よ、わたしはこのたび、この地に住む者を投げ捨てる。かつ彼らをせめなやまして、思い知らせる」。
10-19 Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it. わたしはいたでをうけた、ああ、わざわいなるかな、わたしの傷は重い。しかしわたしは言った、「まことに、これは悩みである。わたしはこれを忍ばなければならない」と。
10-20 My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains. わたしの天幕は破れ、綱はことごとく切れ、子どもたちはわたしを捨てて行って、いなくなった。もはやわたしの天幕を張る者はなく、幕を掛ける者もない。
10-21 For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered. 牧者は愚かであって、主に問うことをしないからである。それゆえ彼らは栄えることもなく、その群れはみな散り去っている。
10-22 The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals. 聞けよ、うわさのあるのを。見よ、北の国から大いなる騒ぎが来る。これはユダの町々を荒して山犬の巣とする。
10-23 O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. 主よ、わたしは知っています、人の道は自身によるのではなく、歩む人が、その歩みを自分で決めることのできないことを。
10-24 O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. 主よ、わたしを懲らしてください。正しい道にしたがって、怒らずに懲らしてください。さもないと、わたしは無に帰してしまうでしょう。
10-25 Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. あなたを知らない国民と、あなたの名をとなえない人々にあなたの怒りを注いでください。彼らはヤコブを食い尽しこれを食い尽して滅ぼし、そのすみかを荒したからです。
