18-1 The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, 主からエレミヤに臨んだ言葉。
18-2 Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. 「立って、陶器師の家に下って行きなさい。その所でわたしはあなたにわたしの言葉を聞かせよう」。
18-3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he was making a work on the wheels. わたしは陶器師の家へ下って行った。見ると彼は、ろくろで仕事をしていたが、
18-4 And when the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 粘土で造っていた器が、その人の手の中で仕損じたので、彼は自分の意のままに、それをもってほかの器を造った。
18-5 Then the word of Jehovah came to me, saying, その時、主の言葉がわたしに臨んだ、
18-6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel. 「主は仰せられる、イスラエルの家よ、この陶器師がしたように、わたしもあなたがたにできないのだろうか。イスラエルの家よ、陶器師の手に粘土があるように、あなたがたはわたしの手のうちにある。
18-7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; ある時には、わたしが民または国を抜く、破る、滅ぼすということがあるが、
18-8 if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. もしわたしの言った国がその悪を離れるならば、わたしはこれに災を下そうとしたことを思いかえす。
18-9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; またある時には、わたしが民または国を建てる、植えるということがあるが、
18-10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them. もしその国がわたしの目に悪と見えることを行い、わたしの声に聞き従わないなら、わたしはこれに幸を与えようとしたことを思いかえす。
18-11 Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings. それゆえ、ユダの人々とエルサレムに住む者に言いなさい、『主はこう仰せられる、見よ、わたしはあなたがたに災を下そうと工夫し、あなたがたを攻める計りごとを立てている。あなたがたはおのおのその悪しき道を離れ、その道と行いを改めなさい』と。
18-12 But they say, It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and we will do every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart. しかし彼らは言う、『それはむだです。われわれは自分の図るところに従い、おのおのその悪い強情な心にしたがって行動します』と。
18-13 Therefore thus saith Jehovah: Ask ye now among the nations, who hath heard such things; the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. それゆえ主はこう言われる、異邦の民のうちのある者に尋ねてみよ、このような事を聞いた者があろうか。おとめイスラエルは恐ろしい事をした。
18-14 Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? or shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up? レバノンの雪が、どうしてシリオンの岩を離れようか。山の水、冷たい川の流れが、どうしてかわいてしまおうか。
18-15 For my people have forgotten me, they have burned incense to false gods; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in bypaths, in a way not cast up; それなのにわが民はわたしを忘れて、偽りの神々に香をたいている。彼らはその道、古い道につまずき、また小道に入り、大路からはなれた。
18-16 to make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head. 自分の地を荒れすたれさせて、いつまでも人に舌打ちされるものとした。そこを通る人はみな身震いして、首を振る。
18-17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity. わたしは東風のように、彼らをその敵の前に散らす。その滅びの日には、わたしは彼らに背を向け、顔を向けない」。
18-18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. 彼らは言った、「さあ、計略をめぐらして、エレミヤを倒そう。祭司には律法があり、知恵ある者には計りごとがあり、預言者には言葉があって、これらのものが滅びてしまうことはない。さあ、われわれは舌をもって彼を撃とう。彼のすべての言葉に、心を留めないことにしよう」。
18-19 Give heed to me, O Jehovah, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. 主よ、どうぞわたしにみ心を留め、わたしの訴えをお聞きください。
18-20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them. 悪をもって善に報いるべきでしょうか。しかもなお彼らはわたしの命を取ろうとして穴を掘りました。わたしがあなたの前に立って、彼らのことを良く言い、あなたの憤りを止めようとしたのを覚えてください。
18-21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men smitten of the sword in battle. それゆえ、彼らの子どもたちをききんに渡し、彼らをつるぎの刃に渡してください。彼らの妻は子を失い、また寡婦となり、男は疫病にかかって死に、若い者は、戦争でつるぎに殺されますように。
18-22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. あなたが敵をにわかに彼らに臨ませられるとき、彼らの家から叫び声が聞えますように。彼らは穴を掘って、わたしを捕えようとし、わなをつくって、わたしの足を捕えようとしたからです。
18-23 Yet, Jehovah, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me; forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight; but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thou with them in the time of thine anger. 主よ、あなたは彼らがわたしを殺すためにめぐらしている計略を皆ごぞんじです。その悪をゆるすことなく、その罪をあなたの前から消し去らないでください。彼らをあなたの前に倒れさせてください。あなたのお怒りになる時に彼らを罰してください。
