4-1 And it came to pass, when all the nation were clean passed over the Jordan, that Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying, 民が皆、ヨルダンを渡り終った時、主はヨシュアに言われた、
4-2 Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, 「民のうちから、部族ごとにひとりずつ、合わせて十二人を選び、
4-3 and command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where ye shall lodge this night. 彼らに命じて言いなさい、『ヨルダンの中で祭司たちが足を踏みとどめたその所から、石十二を取り、それを携えて渡り、今夜あなたがたが宿る場所にすえなさい』」。
4-4 Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man: そこでヨシュアはイスラエルの人々のうちから、部族ごとに、ひとりずつ、かねて定めておいた十二人の者を召し寄せ、
4-5 and Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of the Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; ヨシュアは彼らに言った、「あなたがたの神、主の契約の箱の前に立って行き、ヨルダンの中に進み入り、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、おのおの石一つを取り上げ、肩にのせて運びなさい。
4-6 that this may be a sign among you, that, when your children ask in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? これはあなたがたのうちに、しるしとなるであろう。後の日になって、あなたがたの子どもたちが、『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』と問うならば、
4-7 then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. その時あなたがたは彼らに、むかしヨルダンの水が、主の契約の箱の前で、せきとめられたこと、すなわちその箱がヨルダンを渡った時、ヨルダンの水が、せきとめられたことを告げなければならない。こうして、それらの石は永久にイスラエルの人々の記念となるであろう」。
4-8 And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. イスラエルの人々はヨシュアが命じたようにし、主がヨシュアに言われたように、イスラエルの人々の部族の数にしたがって、ヨルダンの中から十二の石を取り、それを携えて渡り、彼らの宿る場所へ行って、そこにすえた。
4-9 And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests that bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day. ヨシュアはまたヨルダンの中で、契約の箱をかく祭司たちが、足を踏みとどめた所に、十二の石を立てたが、今日まで、そこに残っている。
4-10 For the priests that bare the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over. 箱をかく祭司たちは、主がヨシュアに命じて、民に告げさせられた事が、すべて行われてしまうまで、ヨルダンの中に立っていた。すべてモーセがヨシュアに命じたとおりである。民は急いで渡った。
4-11 And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of Jehovah passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. 民がみな渡り終った時、主の箱と祭司たちとは、民の見る前で渡った。
4-12 And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: ルベンの子孫とガドの子孫、およびマナセの部族の半ばは、モーセが彼らに命じていたように武装して、イスラエルの人々に先立って渡り、
4-13 about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over before Jehovah unto battle, to the plains of Jericho. 戦いのために武装したおおよそ四万の者が戦うため、主の前に渡って、エリコの平野に着いた。
4-14 On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life. この日、主はイスラエルのすべての人の前にヨシュアを尊い者とされたので、彼らはみなモーセを敬ったように、ヨシュアを一生のあいだ敬った。
4-15 And Jehovah spake unto Joshua, saying, 主はヨシュアに言われた、
4-16 Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan. 「あかしの箱をかく祭司たちに命じて、ヨルダンから上がってこさせなさい」。
4-17 Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of the Jordan. ヨシュアは祭司たちに命じて言った、「ヨルダンから上がってきなさい」。
4-18 And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of Jehovah were come up out of the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry ground, that the waters of the Jordan returned unto their place, and went over all its banks, as aforetime. 主の契約の箱をかく祭司たちはヨルダンの中から上がってきたが、祭司たちの足の裏がかわいた地にあがると同時に、ヨルダンの水はもとの所に流れかえって、以前のように、その岸にことごとくあふれた。
4-19 And the people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho. 民は正月の十日に、ヨルダンから上がってきて、エリコの東の境にあるギルガルに宿営した。
4-20 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, did Joshua set up in Gilgal. そしてヨシュアは、人々がヨルダンから取ってきた十二の石をギルガルに立て、
4-21 And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? イスラエルの人々に言った、「後の日にあなたがたの子どもたちが、その父に『これらの石は、どうしたわけですか』とたずねたならば、
4-22 Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. 『むかしイスラエルがこのヨルダンを、かわいた地にされて渡ったのだ』と言って、その子どもたちに知らせなければならない。
4-23 For Jehovah your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over; すなわちあなたがたの神、主はヨルダンの水を、あなたがたのために干しからして、あなたがたを渡らせてくださった。それはあたかも、あなたがたの神、主が、われわれのために紅海を干しからして、われわれを渡らせてくださったのと同じである。
4-24 that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty; that ye may fear Jehovah your God for ever. このようにされたのは、地のすべての民に、主の手に力のあることを知らせ、あなたがたの神、主をつねに恐れさせるためである」。
