Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. |
ユダの王ヨシャパテの第十八年にアハブの子ヨラムはサマリヤでイスラエルの王となり、十二年世を治めた。 |

And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, but not like his
father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his
father had made. |
彼は主の目の前に悪をおこなったが、その父母のようではなかった。彼がその父の造ったバアルの石柱を除いたからである。 |

Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. |
しかし彼はイスラエルに罪を犯させたネバテの子ヤラベアムの罪につき従って、それを離れなかった。 |

Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams. |
モアブの王メシャは羊の飼育者で、十万の小羊と、十万の雄羊の毛とを年々イスラエルの王に納めていたが、 |

But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. |
アハブが死んだ後、モアブの王はイスラエルの王にそむいた。 |

And king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel. |
そこでヨラム王はその時サマリヤを出て、イスラエルびとをことごとく集め、 |

And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses. |
また、人をユダの王ヨシャパテにつかわし、「モアブの王はわたしにそむきました。あなたはモアブと戦うために、わたしと一緒に行かれませんか」と言わせた。彼は言った、「行きましょう。わたしはあなたと一つです。わたしの民はあなたの民と一つです。わたしの馬はあなたの馬と一つです」。 |

And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way of the wilderness of Edom. |
彼はまた言った、「われわれはどの道を上るのですか」。ヨラムは答えた、「エドムの荒野の道を上りましょう」。 |

So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them. |
こうしてイスラエルの王はユダの王およびエドムの王と共に出て行った。しかし彼らは回り道をして、七日の間進んだが、軍勢とそれに従う家畜の飲む水がなかったので、 |

And the king of Israel said, Alas! for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab. |
イスラエルの王は言った、「ああ、主は、この三人の王をモアブの手に渡そうとして召し集められたのだ」。 |

But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, that we may inquire of Jehovah by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah. |
ヨシャパテは言った、「われわれが主に問うことのできる主の預言者はここにいませんか」。イスラエルの王のひとりの家来が答えた、「エリヤの手に水を注いだシャパテの子エリシャがここにいます」。 |

And Jehoshaphat said, The word of Jehovah is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. |
ヨシャパテは言った、「主の言葉が彼にあります」。そこでイスラエルの王とヨシャパテとエドムの王とは彼のもとへ下っていった。 |

And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay; for Jehovah hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab. |
エリシャはイスラエルの王に言った、「わたしはあなたとなんのかかわりがありますか。あなたの父上の預言者たちと母上の預言者たちの所へ行きなさい」。イスラエルの王は彼に言った、「いいえ、主がこの三人の王をモアブの手に渡そうとして召し集められたのです」。 |
| 3-14 |
And Elisha said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. |
エリシャは言った、「わたしの仕える万軍の主は生きておられます。わたしはユダの王ヨシャパテのためにするのでなければ、あなたを顧み、あなたに会うことはしないのだが、 |

But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Jehovah came upon him. |
いま楽人をわたしの所に連れてきなさい」。そこで楽人が楽を奏すると、主の手が彼に臨んで、 |
| 3-16 |
And he said, Thus saith Jehovah, Make this valley full of trenches. |
彼は言った、「主はこう仰せられる、『わたしはこの谷を水たまりで満たそう』。 |
| 3-17 |
For thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts. |
これは主がこう仰せられるからである、『あなたがたは風も雨も見ないのに、この谷に水が満ちて、あなたがたと、その家畜および獣が飲むであろう』。 |
| 3-18 |
And this is but a light thing in the sight of Jehovah: he will also deliver the Moabites into your hand. |
これは主の目には小さい事である。主はモアブびとをも、あなたがたの手に渡される。 |
| 3-19 |
And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones. |
そしてあなたがたはすべての堅固な町と、すべての良い町を撃ち、すべての良い木を切り倒し、すべての水の井戸をふさぎ、石をもって地のすべての良い所を荒すであろう」。 |
| 3-20 |
And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of offering the oblation, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. |
あくる朝になって、供え物をささげる時に、水がエドムの方から流れてきて、水は国に満ちた。 |
| 3-21 |
Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border. |
さてモアブびとは皆、王たちが自分たちを攻めるために上ってきたのを聞いたので、よろいを着ることのできる者を、老いも若きもことごとく召集して、国境に配置したが、 |

And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood: |
朝はやく起きて、太陽がのぼって水を照したとき、モアブびとは目の前に血のように赤い水を見たので、 |
| 3-23 |
and they said, This is blood; the kings are surely destroyed, and they have smitten each man his fellow: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil. |
彼らは言った、「これは血だ、きっと王たちが互に戦って殺し合ったのだ。だから、モアブよ、ぶんどりに行きなさい」。 |
| 3-24 |
And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites. |
しかしモアブびとがイスラエルの陣営に行くと、イスラエルびとは立ちあがってモアブびとを撃ったので、彼らはイスラエルの前から逃げ去った。イスラエルびとは進んで、モアブびとを撃ち、その国にはいって、 |

And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir-hareseth only they left the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it. |
町々を滅ぼし、おのおの石を一つずつ、地のすべての良い所に投げて、これに満たし、水の井戸をことごとくふさぎ、良い木をことごとく切り倒して、ただキル・ハラセテはその名を残すのみとなったが、石を投げる者がこれを囲んで撃ち滅ぼした。 |

And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not. |
モアブの王は戦いがあまりに激しく、当りがたいのを見て、つるぎを抜く者七百人を率い、エドムの王の所に突き入ろうとしたが、果さなかったので、 |

Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land. |
自分の位を継ぐべきその長子をとって城壁の上で燔祭としてささげた。その時イスラエルに大いなる憤りが臨んだので、彼らは彼をすてて自分の国に帰った。 |
