| 4-1 |
Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear Jehovah: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen. |
預言者のともがらの、ひとりの妻がエリシャに呼ばわって言った、「あなたのしもべであるわたしの夫が死にました。ごぞんじのように、あなたのしもべは主を恐れる者でありましたが、今、債主がきて、わたしのふたりの子供を取って奴隷にしようとしているのです」。 |

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me; what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thy handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil. |
エリシャは彼女に言った、「あなたのために何をしましょうか。あなたの家にどんな物があるか、言いなさい」。彼女は言った、「一びんの油のほかは、はしための家に何もありません」。 |

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. |

And thou shalt go in, and shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and pour out into all those vessels; and thou shalt set aside that which is full. |
そして内にはいって、あなたの子供たちと一緒に戸の内に閉じこもり、そのすべての器に油をついで、いっぱいになったとき、一つずつそれを取りのけておきなさい」。 |

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons; they brought the vessels to her, and she poured out. |
彼女は彼を離れて去り、子供たちと一緒に戸の内に閉じこもり、子供たちの持って来る器に油をついだ。 |

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. |

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy sons of the rest. |

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. |
ある日エリシャはシュネムへ行ったが、そこにひとりの裕福な婦人がいて、しきりに彼に食事をすすめたので、彼はそこを通るごとに、そこに寄って食事をした。 |

And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passeth by us continually. |
その女は夫に言った、「いつもわたしたちの所を通るあの人は確かに神の聖なる人です。 |

Let us make, I pray thee, a little chamber on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a seat, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. |
わたしたちは屋上に壁のある一つの小さいへやを造り、そこに寝台と机といすと燭台とを彼のために備えましょう。そうすれば彼がわたしたちの所に来るとき、そこに、はいることができます」。 |

And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber and lay there. |
さて、ある日エリシャはそこにきて、そのへやにはいり、そこに休んだが、 |

And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. |
彼はそのしもべゲハジに「このシュネムの女を呼んできなさい」と言った。彼がその女を呼ぶと、彼女はきてエリシャの前に立ったので、 |
| 4-13 |
And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. |
エリシャはゲハジに言った、「彼女に言いなさい、『あなたはこんなにねんごろに、わたしたちのために心を用いられたが、あなたのためには何をしたらよいでしょうか。王または軍勢の長にあなたの事をよろしく頼むことをお望みですか』」。彼女は答えて言った、「わたしは自分の民のうちに住んでいます」。 |

And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no son, and her husband is old. |
エリシャは言った、「それでは彼女のために何をしようか」。ゲハジは言った、「彼女には子供がなく、その夫は老いています」。 |

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. |
するとエリシャが「彼女を呼びなさい」と言ったので、彼女を呼ぶと、来て戸口に立った。 |

And he said, At this season, when the time cometh round, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thy handmaid. |
エリシャは言った、「来年の今ごろ、あなたはひとりの子を抱くでしょう」。彼女は言った、「いいえ、わが主よ、神の人よ、はしためを欺かないでください」。 |

And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season, when the time came round, as Elisha had said unto her. |
しかし女はついに身ごもって、エリシャが彼女に言ったように、次の年のそのころに子を産んだ。 |

And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. |
その子が成長して、ある日、刈入れびとの所へ出ていって、父のもとへ行ったが、 |

And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to his servant, Carry him to his mother. |
父にむかって「頭が、頭が」と言ったので、父はしもべに「彼を母のもとへ背負っていきなさい」と言った。 |
| 4-20 |
And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. |
彼を背負って母のもとへ行くと、昼まで母のひざの上にすわっていたが、ついに死んだ。 |
| 4-21 |
And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. |
母は上がっていって、これを神の人の寝台の上に置き、戸を閉じて出てきた。 |
| 4-22 |
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the servants, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. |
そして夫を呼んで言った、「どうぞ、しもべひとりと、ろば一頭をわたしにかしてください。急いで神の人の所へ行って、また帰ってきます」。 |
| 4-23 |
And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to-day? it is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well. |
夫は言った、「どうしてきょう彼の所へ行こうとするのか。きょうは、ついたちでもなく、安息日でもない」。彼女は言った、「よろしいのです」。 |
| 4-24 |
Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slacken me not the riding, except I bid thee. |
そして彼女はろばにくらを置いて、しもべに言った、「速く駆けさせなさい。わたしが命じる時でなければ、歩調をゆるめてはなりません」。 |
| 4-25 |
So she went, and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel.And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is the Shunammite: |
こうして彼女は出発してカルメル山へ行き、神の人の所へ行った。神の人は彼女の近づいてくるのを見て、しもべゲハジに言った、「向こうから、あのシュネムの女が来る。 |

run, I pray thee, now to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. |
すぐ走って行って、彼女を迎えて言いなさい、『あなたは無事ですか。あなたの夫は無事ですか。あなたの子供は無事ですか』」。彼女は答えた、「無事です」。 |

And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is vexed within her; and Jehovah hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. |
ところが彼女は山にきて、神の人の所へくるとエリシャの足にすがりついた。ゲハジが彼女を追いのけようと近よった時、神の人は言った、「かまわずにおきなさい。彼女は心に苦しみがあるのだから。主はそれを隠して、まだわたしにお告げにならないのだ」。 |

Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? |
そこで彼女は言った、「わたしがあなたに子を求めましたか。わたしを欺かないでくださいと言ったではありませんか」。 |
| 4-29 |
Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. |
エリシャはゲハジに言った、「腰をひきからげ、わたしのつえを手に持って行きなさい。だれに会っても、あいさつしてはならない。またあなたにあいさつする者があっても、それに答えてはならない。わたしのつえを子供の顔の上に置きなさい」。 |

And the mother of the child said, As Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. |
子供の母は言った、「主は生きておられます。あなたも生きておられます。わたしはあなたを離れません」。そこでエリシャはついに立ちあがって彼女のあとについて行った。 |
| 4-31 |
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. |
ゲハジは彼らの先に行って、つえを子供の顔の上に置いたが、なんの声もなく、生きかえったしるしもなかったので、帰ってきてエリシャに会い、彼に告げて「子供はまだ目をさましません」と言った。 |

And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. |
エリシャが家にはいって見ると、子供は死んで、寝台の上に横たわっていたので、 |
| 4-33 |
He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto Jehovah. |
彼ははいって戸を閉じ、彼らふたりだけ内にいて主に祈った。 |
| 4-34 |
And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon him; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. |
そしてエリシャが上がって子供の上に伏し、自分の口を子供の口の上に、自分の目を子供の目の上に、自分の両手を子供の両手の上にあて、その身を子供の上に伸ばしたとき、子供のからだは暖かになった。 |

Then he returned, and walked in the house once to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. |
こうしてエリシャは再び起きあがって、家の中をあちらこちらと歩み、また上がって、その身を子供の上に伸ばすと、子供は七たびくしゃみをして目を開いた。 |

And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. |
エリシャはただちにゲハジを呼んで、「あのシュネムの女を呼べ」と言ったので、彼女を呼んだ。彼女がはいってくるとエリシャは言った、「あなたの子供をつれて行きなさい」。 |

Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground; and she took up her son, and went out. |
彼女ははいってきて、エリシャの足もとに伏し、地に身をかがめた。そしてその子供を取りあげて出ていった。 |
| 4-38 |
And Elisha came again to Gilgal. And there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets. |
エリシャはギルガルに帰ったが、その地にききんがあった。預言者のともがらが彼の前に座していたので、エリシャはそのしもべに言った、「大きなかまをすえて、預言者のともがらのために野菜の煮物をつくりなさい」。 |

And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage; for they knew them not. |
彼らのうちのひとりが畑に出ていって青物をつんだが、つる草のあるのを見て、その野うりを一包つんできて、煮物のかまの中に切り込んだ。彼らはそれが何であるかを知らなかったからである。 |
| 4-40 |
So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. |
やがてこれを盛って人々に食べさせようとしたが、彼らがその煮物を食べようとした時、叫んで、「ああ神の人よ、かまの中に、たべると死ぬものがはいっています」と言って、食べることができなかったので、 |
| 4-41 |
But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot. |
エリシャは「それでは粉を持って来なさい」と言って、それをかまに投げ入れ、「盛って人々に食べさせなさい」と言った。かまの中には、なんの毒物もなくなった。 |

And there came a man from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. |
その時、バアル・シャリシャから人がきて、初穂のパンと、大麦のパン二十個と、新穀一袋とを神の人のもとに持ってきたので、エリシャは「人々に与えて食べさせなさい」と言ったが、 |

And his servant said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? But he said, Give the people, that they may eat; for thus saith Jehovah, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. |
その召使は言った、「どうしてこれを百人の前に供えるのですか」。しかし彼は言った、「人々に与えて食べさせなさい。主はこう言われる、『彼らは食べてなお余すであろう』」。 |

So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of Jehovah. |
そこで彼はそれを彼らの前に供えたので、彼らは食べてなお余した。主の言葉のとおりであった。 |
