16-1 And Jehovah said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go: I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons. さて主はサムエルに言われた、「わたしがすでにサウルを捨てて、イスラエルの王位から退けたのに、あなたはいつまで彼のために悲しむのか。角に油を満たし、それをもって行きなさい。あなたをベツレヘムびとエッサイのもとにつかわします。わたしはその子たちのうちにひとりの王を捜し得たからである」。
16-2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah. サムエルは言った、「どうしてわたしは行くことができましょう。サウルがそれを聞けば、わたしを殺すでしょう」。主は言われた、「一頭の子牛を引いていって、『主に犠牲をささげるためにきました』と言いなさい。
16-3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. そしてエッサイを犠牲の場所に呼びなさい。その時わたしはあなたのすることを示します。わたしがあなたに告げる人に油を注がなければならない」。
16-4 And Samuel did that which Jehovah spake, and came to Beth-lehem. And the elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, Comest thou peaceably? サムエルは主が命じられたようにして、ベツレヘムへ行った。町の長老たちは、恐れながら出て、彼を迎え、「穏やかな事のためにこられたのですか」と言った。
16-5 And he said, Peaceably; I am come to sacrifice unto Jehovah: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. サムエルは言った、「穏やかな事のためです。わたしは主に犠牲をささげるためにきました。身をきよめて、犠牲の場所にわたしと共にきてください」。そしてサムエルはエッサイとその子たちをきよめて犠牲の場に招いた。
16-6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah’s anointed is before him. 彼らがきた時、サムエルはエリアブを見て、「自分の前にいるこの人こそ、主が油をそそがれる人だ」と思った。
16-7 But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for Jehovah seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart. しかし主はサムエルに言われた、「顔かたちや身のたけを見てはならない。わたしはすでにその人を捨てた。わたしが見るところは人とは異なる。人は外の顔かたちを見、主は心を見る」。
16-8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this. そこでエッサイはアビナダブを呼んでサムエルの前を通らせた。サムエルは言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人でもない」。
16-9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath Jehovah chosen this. エッサイはシャンマを通らせたが、サムエルは言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人でもない」。
16-10 And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Jehovah hath not chosen these. エッサイは七人の子にサムエルの前を通らせたが、サムエルはエッサイに言った、「主が選ばれたのはこの人たちではない」。
16-11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither. サムエルはエッサイに言った、「あなたのむすこたちは皆ここにいますか」。彼は言った、「まだ末の子が残っていますが羊を飼っています」。サムエルはエッサイに言った、「人をやって彼を連れてきなさい。彼がここに来るまで、われわれは食卓につきません」。
16-12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he. そこで人をやって彼をつれてきた。彼は血色のよい、目のきれいな、姿の美しい人であった。主は言われた、「立ってこれに油をそそげ。これがその人である」。
16-13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. サムエルは油の角をとって、その兄弟たちの中で、彼に油をそそいだ。この日からのち、主の霊は、はげしくダビデの上に臨んだ。そしてサムエルは立ってラマへ行った。
16-14 Now the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him. さて主の霊はサウルを離れ、主から来る悪霊が彼を悩ました。
16-15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. サウルの家来たちは彼に言った、「ごらんなさい。神から来る悪霊があなたを悩ましているのです。
16-16 Let our lord now command thy servants, that are before thee, to seek out a man who is a skilful player on the harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. どうぞ、われわれの主君が、あなたの前に仕えている家来たちに命じて、じょうずに琴をひく者ひとりを捜させてください。神から来る悪霊があなたに臨む時、彼が手で琴をひくならば、あなたは良くなられるでしょう」。
16-17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. そこでサウルは家来たちに言った、「じょうずに琴をひく者を捜して、わたしのもとに連れてきなさい」。
16-18 Then answered one of the young men, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is skilful in playing, and a mighty man of valor, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Jehovah is with him. その時、ひとりの若者がこたえた、「わたしはベツレヘムびとエッサイの子を見ましたが、琴がじょうずで、勇気もあり、いくさびとで、弁舌にひいで、姿の美しい人です。また主が彼と共におられます」。
16-19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep. そこでサウルはエッサイのもとに使者をつかわして言った、「羊を飼っているあなたの子ダビデをわたしのもとによこしなさい」。
16-20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. エッサイは、ろばにパンを負わせ、皮袋にいれたぶどう酒一袋と、やぎの子とを取って、その子ダビデの手によってサウルに送った。
16-21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armorbearer. ダビデはサウルのもとにきて、彼に仕えた。サウルはひじょうにこれを愛して、その武器を執る者とした。
16-22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favor in my sight. またサウルは人をつかわしてエッサイに言った、「ダビデをわたしに仕えさせてください。彼はわたしの心にかないました」。
16-23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. 神から出る悪霊がサウルに臨む時、ダビデは琴をとり、手でそれをひくと、サウルは気が静まり、良くなって、悪霊は彼を離れた。
