6-1 And the ark of Jehovah was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 主の箱は七か月の間ペリシテびとの地にあった。
6-2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? show us wherewith we shall sent it to its place. ペリシテびとは、祭司や占い師を呼んで言った、「イスラエルの神の箱をどうしましょうか。どのようにして、それをもとの所へ送り返せばよいか告げてください」。
6-3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but by all means return him a trespass-offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 彼らは言った、「イスラエルの神の箱を送り返す時には、それをむなしく返してはならない。必ず彼にとがの供え物をもって償いをしなければならない。そうすれば、あなたがたはいやされ、また彼の手がなぜあなたがたを離れないかを知ることができるであろう」。
6-4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass-offering which we shall return to him? And they said, Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords. 人々は言った、「われわれが償うとがの供え物には何をしましょうか」。彼らは答えた、「ペリシテびとの君たちの数にしたがって、金の腫物五つと金のねずみ五つである。あなたがたすべてと、君たちに臨んだ災は一つだからである。
6-5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. それゆえ、あなたがたの腫物の像と、地を荒すねずみの像を造り、イスラエルの神に栄光を帰するならば、たぶん彼は、あなたがた、およびあなたがたの神々と、あなたがたの地に、その手を加えることを軽くされるであろう。
6-6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed? なにゆえ、あなたがたはエジプトびととパロがその心をかたくなにしたように、自分の心をかたくなにするのか。神が彼らを悩ましたので、彼らは民を行かせ、民は去ったではないか。
6-7 Now therefore take and prepare you a new cart, and two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke; and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them; それゆえ今、新しい車一両を造り、まだくびきを付けたことのない乳牛二頭をとり、その牛を車につなぎ、そのおのおのの子牛を乳牛から離して家に連れ帰り、
6-8 and take the ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass-offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. 主の箱をとって、それをその車に載せ、あなたがたがとがの供え物として彼に償う金の作り物を一つの箱におさめてそのかたわらに置き、それを送って去らせなさい。
6-9 And see; if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us. そして見ていて、それが自分の領地へ行く道を、ベテシメシへ上るならば、この大いなる災を、われわれに下したのは彼である。しかし、そうしない時は、われわれを撃ったのは彼の手ではなく、その事の偶然であったことを知るであろう」。
6-10 And the men did so, and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home; 人々はそのようにした。すなわち、彼らは二頭の乳牛をとって、これを車につなぎ、そのおのおのの子牛を家に閉じこめ、
6-11 and they put the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors. 主の箱、および金のねずみと、腫物の像をおさめた箱とを車に載せた。
6-12 And the kine took the straight way by the way to Beth-shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. すると雌牛はまっすぐにベテシメシの方向へ、ひとすじに大路を歩み、鳴きながら進んでいって、右にも左にも曲らなかった。ペリシテびとの君たちは、ベテシメシの境までそのあとについていった。
6-13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 時にベテシメシの人々は谷で小麦を刈り入れていたが、目をあげて、その箱を見、それを迎えて喜んだ。
6-14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine for a burnt-offering unto Jehovah. 車はベテシメシびとヨシュアの畑にはいって、そこにとどまった。その所に大きな石があった。人々は車の木を割り、その雌牛を燔祭として主にささげた。
6-15 And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto Jehovah. レビびとは主の箱と、そのかたわらの、金の作り物をおさめた箱を取りおろし、それを大石の上に置いた。そしてベテシメシの人々は、その日、主に燔祭を供え、犠牲をささげた。
6-16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. ペリシテびとの五人の君たちはこれを見て、その日、エクロンに帰った。
6-17 And these are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass-offering unto Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; ペリシテびとが、とがの供え物として、主に償いをした金の腫物は、次のとおりである。すなわちアシドドのために一つ、ガザのために一つ、アシケロンのために一つ、ガテのために一つ、エクロンのために一つであった。
6-18 and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even unto the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of Jehovah, which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite. また金のねずみは、城壁をめぐらした町から城壁のない村里にいたるまで、すべて五人の君たちに属するペリシテびとの町の数にしたがって造った。主の箱をおろした所のかたわらにあった大石は、今日にいたるまで、ベテシメシびとヨシュアの畑にあって、あかしとなっている。
6-19 And he smote of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, he smote of the people seventy men, and fifty thousand men; and the people mourned, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter. ベテシメシの人々で主の箱の中を見たものがあったので、主はこれを撃たれた。すなわち民のうち七十人を撃たれた。主が民を撃って多くの者を殺されたので、民はなげき悲しんだ。
6-20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God? and to whom shall he go up from us? ベテシメシの人々は言った、「だれが、この聖なる神、主の前に立つことができようか。主はわれわれを離れてだれの所へ上って行かれたらよいのか」。
6-21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought back the ark of Jehovah; come ye down, and fetch it up to you. そして彼らは、使者をキリアテ・ヤリムの人々につかわして言った、「ペリシテびとが主の箱を返したから、下ってきて、それをあなたがたの所へ携え上ってください」。
