Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor. |
さて、ベニヤミンの人で、キシという名の裕福な人があった。キシはアビエルの子、アビエルはゼロルの子、ゼロルはベコラテの子、ベコラテはアピヤの子、アピヤはベニヤミンびとである。 |

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a young man and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. |
キシにはサウルという名の子があった。若くて麗しく、イスラエルの人々のうちに彼よりも麗しい人はなく、民のだれよりも肩から上、背が高かった。 |

And the asses of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. |
サウルの父キシの数頭のろばがいなくなった。そこでキシは、その子サウルに言った、「しもべをひとり連れて、立って行き、ろばを捜してきなさい」。 |

And he passed through the hill-country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not. |
そこでふたりはエフライムの山地を通りすぎ、シャリシャの地を通り過ぎたけれども見当らず、シャリムの地を通り過ぎたけれどもおらず、ベニヤミンの地を通り過ぎたけれども見当らなかった。 |

When they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return, lest my father leave off caring for the asses, and be anxious for us. |
彼らがツフの地にきた時、サウルは連れてきたしもべに言った、「さあ、帰ろう。父は、ろばのことよりも、われわれのことを心配するだろう」。 |

And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man that is held in honor; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go. |
ところが、しもべは言った、「この町には神の人がおられます。尊い人で、その言われることはみなそのとおりになります。その所へ行きましょう。われわれの出てきた旅のことについて何か示されるでしょう」。 |

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we? |
サウルはしもべに言った、「しかし行くのであれば、その人に何を贈ろうか。袋のパンはもはや、なくなり、神の人に持っていく贈り物がない。何かありますか」。 |

And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way. |
しもべは、またサウルに答えた、「わたしの手に四分の一シケルの銀があります。わたしはこれを、神の人に与えて、われわれの道を示してもらいましょう」。 |

(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said,
Come, and let us go to the seer; for he that is now called a Prophet was
beforetime called a Seer.) |
――昔イスラエルでは、神に問うために行く時には、こう言った、「さあ、われわれは先見者のところへ行こう」。今の預言者は、昔は先見者といわれていたのである。―― |

Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was. |
サウルはそのしもべに言った、「それは良い。さあ、行こう」。こうして彼らは、神の人のいるその町へ行った。 |
| 9-11 |
As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here? |
彼らは町へ行く坂を上っている時、水をくむために出てくるおとめたちに出会ったので、彼らに言った、「先見者はここにおられますか」。 |
| 9-12 |
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before thee: make haste now, for he is come to-day into the city; for the people have a sacrifice to-day in the high place: |
おとめたちは答えた、「おられます。ごらんなさい、この先です。急いで行きなさい。民がきょう高き所で犠牲をささげるので、たった今、町にこられたところです。 |

as soon as ye are come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he goeth up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that are bidden. Now therefore get you up; for at this time ye shall find him. |
あなたがたは、町にはいるとすぐ、あのかたが高き所に上って食事される前に会えるでしょう。民はそのかたがこられるまでは食事をしません。あのかたが犠牲を祝福されてから、招かれた人々が食事をするのです。さあ、上っていきなさい。すぐに会えるでしょう」。 |

And they went up to the city; and as they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place. |
こうして彼らは町に上っていった。そして町の中に、はいろうとした時、サムエルは高き所に上るため彼らのほうに向かって出てきた。 |
| 9-15 |
Now Jehovah had revealed unto Samuel a day before Saul came, saying, |
さてサウルが来る一日前に、主はサムエルの耳に告げて言われた、 |
| 9-16 |
To-morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. |
「あすの今ごろ、あなたの所に、ベニヤミンの地から、ひとりの人をつかわすであろう。あなたはその人に油を注いで、わたしの民イスラエルの君としなさい。彼はわたしの民をペリシテびとの手から救い出すであろう。わたしの民の叫びがわたしに届き、わたしがその悩みを顧みるからである」。 |
| 9-17 |
And when Samuel saw Saul, Jehovah said unto him, Behold, the man of whom I spake to thee! this same shall have authority over my people. |
サムエルがサウルを見た時、主は言われた、「見よ、わたしの言ったのはこの人である。この人がわたしの民を治めるであろう」。 |
| 9-18 |
Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is. |
そのときサウルは、門の中でサムエルに近づいて言った、「先見者の家はどこですか。どうか教えてください」。 |
| 9-19 |
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer; go up before me unto the high place, for ye shall eat with me to-day: and in the morning I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thy heart. |
サムエルはサウルに答えた、「わたしがその先見者です。わたしの前に行って、高き所に上りなさい。あなたがたは、きょう、わたしと一緒に食事しなさい。わたしはあすの朝あなたを帰らせ、あなたの心にあることをみな示しましょう。 |
| 9-20 |
And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for thee, and for all thy father’s house? |
三日前に、いなくなったあなたのろばは、もはや見つかったので心にかけなくてもよろしい。しかしイスラエルのすべての望ましきものはだれのものですか。それはあなたのもの、あなたの父の家のすべての人のものではありませんか」。 |
| 9-21 |
And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou to me after this manner? |
サウルは答えた、「わたしはイスラエルのうちの最も小さい部族のベニヤミンびとであって、わたしの一族はまたベニヤミンのどの一族よりも卑しいものではありませんか。どうしてあなたは、そのようなことをわたしに言われるのですか」。 |

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest-chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, who were about thirty persons. |
サムエルはサウルとそのしもべを導いて、へやにはいり、招かれた三十人ほどのうちの上座にすわらせた。 |
| 9-23 |
And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee. |
そしてサムエルは料理人に言った、「あなたに渡して、取りのけておくようにと言っておいた分を持ってきなさい」。 |
| 9-24 |
And the cook took up the thigh, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold, that which hath been reserved! set it before thee and eat; because unto the appointed time hath it been kept for thee, for I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day. |
料理人は、ももとその上の部分を取り上げて、それをサウルの前に置いた。そしてサムエルは言った、「ごらんなさい。取っておいた物が、あなたの前に置かれています。召しあがってください。あなたが客人たちと一緒に食事ができるように、この時まで、あなたのために取っておいたものです」。こうしてサウルはその日サムエルと一緒に食事をした。 |

And when they were come down from the high place into the city, he communed with Saul upon the housetop. |
そして彼らが高き所を下って町にはいった時、サウルのために屋上に床が設けられ、彼はその上に身を横たえて寝た。 |

And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. |
そして夜明けになって、サムエルは屋上のサウルに呼ばわって言った、「起きなさい。あなたをお送りします」。サウルは起き上がった。そしてサウルとサムエルのふたりは、共に外に出た。 |

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us (and he passed on), but stand thou still first, that I may cause thee to hear the word of God. |
彼らが町はずれに下った時、サムエルはサウルに言った、「あなたのしもべに先に行くように言いなさい。しもべが先に行ったら、あなたは、しばらくここに立ちとどまってください。神の言葉を知らせましょう」。 |
