11-1 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. 春になって、王たちが戦いに出るに及んで、ダビデはヨアブおよび自分と共にいる家来たち、並びにイスラエルの全軍をつかわした。彼らはアンモンの人々を滅ぼし、ラバを包囲した。しかしダビデはエルサレムにとどまっていた。
11-2 And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. さて、ある日の夕暮、ダビデは床から起き出て、王の家の屋上を歩いていたが、屋上から、ひとりの女がからだを洗っているのを見た。その女は非常に美しかった。
11-3 And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ダビデは人をつかわしてその女のことを探らせたが、ある人は言った、「これはエリアムの娘で、ヘテびとウリヤの妻バテシバではありませんか」。
11-4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned unto her house. そこでダビデは使者をつかわして、その女を連れてきた。女は彼の所にきて、彼はその女と寝た。（女は身の汚れを清めていたのである。）こうして女はその家に帰った。
11-5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child. 女は妊娠したので、人をつかわしてダビデに告げて言った、「わたしは子をはらみました」。
11-6 And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. そこでダビデはヨアブに、「ヘテびとウリヤをわたしの所につかわせ」と言ってやったので、ヨアブはウリヤをダビデの所につかわした。
11-7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered. ウリヤがダビデの所にきたので、ダビデは、ヨアブはどうしているか、民はどうしているか、戦いはうまくいっているかとたずねた。
11-8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a mess of food from the king. そしてダビデはウリヤに言った、「あなたの家に行って、足を洗いなさい」。ウリヤは王の家を出ていったが、王の贈り物が彼の後に従った。
11-9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. しかしウリヤは王の家の入口で主君の家来たちと共に寝て、自分の家に帰らなかった。
11-10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house? 人々がダビデに、「ウリヤは自分の家に帰りませんでした」と告げたので、ダビデはウリヤに言った、「旅から帰ってきたのではないか。どうして家に帰らなかったのか」。
11-11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. ウリヤはダビデに言った、「神の箱も、イスラエルも、ユダも、小屋の中に住み、わたしの主人ヨアブと、わが主君の家来たちが野のおもてに陣を取っているのに、わたしはどうして家に帰って食い飲みし、妻と寝ることができましょう。あなたは生きておられます。あなたの魂は生きています。わたしはこの事をいたしません」。
11-12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. ダビデはウリヤに言った、「きょうも、ここにとどまりなさい。わたしはあす、あなたを去らせましょう」。そこでウリヤはその日と次の日エルサレムにとどまった。
11-13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house. ダビデは彼を招いて自分の前で食い飲みさせ、彼を酔わせた。夕暮になって彼は出ていって、その床に、主君の家来たちと共に寝た。そして自分の家には下って行かなかった。
11-14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 朝になってダビデはヨアブにあてた手紙を書き、ウリヤの手に託してそれを送った。
11-15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. 彼はその手紙に、「あなたがたはウリヤを激しい戦いの最前線に出し、彼の後から退いて、彼を討死させよ」と書いた。
11-16 And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were. ヨアブは町を囲んでいたので、勇士たちがいると知っていた場所にウリヤを置いた。
11-17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also. 町の人々が出てきてヨアブと戦ったので、民のうち、ダビデの家来たちにも、倒れるものがあり、ヘテびとウリヤも死んだ。
11-18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; ヨアブは人をつかわして戦いのことをつぶさにダビデに告げた。
11-19 and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king, ヨアブはその使者に命じて言った、「あなたが戦いのことをつぶさに王に語り終ったとき、
11-20 it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall? もし王が怒りを起して、『あなたがたはなぜ戦おうとしてそんなに町に近づいたのか。彼らが城壁の上から射るのを知らなかったのか。
11-21 who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. エルベセテの子アビメレクを撃ったのはだれか。ひとりの女が城壁の上から石うすの上石を投げて彼をテベツで殺したのではなかったか。あなたがたはなぜそんなに城壁に近づいたのか』と言われたならば、その時あなたは、『あなたのしもべ、ヘテびとウリヤもまた死にました』と言いなさい」。
11-22 So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for. こうして使者は行き、ダビデのもとにきて、ヨアブが言いつかわしたことをことごとく告げた。
11-23 And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate. 使者はダビデに言った、「敵はわれわれよりも有利な位置を占め、出てきてわれわれを野で攻めましたが、われわれは町の入口まで彼らを追い返しました。
11-24 And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. その時、射手どもは城壁からあなたの家来たちを射ましたので、王の家来のある者は死に、また、あなたの家来ヘテびとウリヤも死にました」。
11-25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him. ダビデは使者に言った、「あなたはヨアブにこう言いなさい、『この事で心配することはない。つるぎはこれをも彼をも同じく滅ぼすからである。強く町を攻めて戦い、それを攻め落しなさい』と。そしてヨアブを励ましなさい」。
11-26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband. ウリヤの妻は夫ウリヤが死んだことを聞いて、夫のために悲しんだ。
11-27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah. その喪が過ぎた時、ダビデは人をつかわして彼女を自分の家に召し入れた。彼女は彼の妻となって男の子を産んだ。しかしダビデがしたこの事は主を怒らせた。
