17-1 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: 時にアヒトペルはアブサロムに言った、「わたしに一万二千の人を選び出させてください。わたしは立って、今夜ダビデのあとを追い、
17-2 and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only; 彼が疲れて手が弱くなっているところを襲って、彼をあわてさせましょう。そして彼と共にいる民がみな逃げるとき、わたしは王ひとりを撃ち取り、
17-3 and I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace. すべての民を花嫁がその夫のもとに帰るようにあなたに帰らせましょう。あなたが求めておられるのはただひとりの命だけですから、民はみな穏やかになるでしょう」。
17-4 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. この言葉はアブサロムとイスラエルのすべての長老の心にかなった。
17-5 Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. そこでアブサロムは言った、「アルキびとホシャイをも呼びよせなさい。われわれは彼の言うことを聞きましょう」。
17-6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou. ホシャイがアブサロムのもとにきた時、アブサロムは彼に言った、「アヒトペルはこのように言った。われわれは彼の言葉のように行うべきか。いけないのであれば、言いなさい」。
17-7 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given this time is not good. ホシャイはアブサロムに言った、「このたびアヒトペルが授けた計りごとは良くありません」。
17-8 Hushai said moreover, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. ホシャイはまた言った、「ごぞんじのように、あなたの父とその従者たちとは勇士です。その上彼らは、野で子を奪われた熊のように、ひどく怒っています。また、あなたの父はいくさびとですから、民と共に宿らないでしょう。
17-9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them are fallen at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. 彼は今でも穴の中か、どこかほかの所にかくれています。もし民のうちの幾人かが手始めに倒れるならば、それを聞く者はだれでも、『アブサロムに従う民のうちに戦死者があった』と言うでしょう。
17-10 And even he that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men. そうすれば、ししの心のような心のある勇ましい人であっても、恐れて消え去ってしまうでしょう。それはイスラエルのすべての人が、あなたの父の勇士であること、また彼と共にいる者が、勇ましい人々であることを知っているからです。
17-11 But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together unto thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. ところでわたしの計りごとは、イスラエルをダンからベエルシバまで、海べの砂のように多くあなたのもとに集めて、あなたみずから戦いに臨むことです。
17-12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him we will not leave so much as one. こうしてわれわれは彼の見つかる場所で彼を襲い、つゆが地におりるように彼の上に下る。そして彼および彼と共にいるすべての人をひとりも残さないでしょう。
17-13 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. もし彼がいずれかの町に退くならば、全イスラエルはその町になわをかけ、われわれはそれを谷に引き倒して、そこに一つの小石も見られないようにするでしょう」。
17-14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For Jehovah had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom. アブサロムとイスラエルの人々はみな、「アルキびとホシャイの計りごとは、アヒトペルの計りごとよりもよい」と言った。それは主がアブサロムに災を下そうとして、アヒトペルの良い計りごとを破ることを定められたからである。
17-15 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. そこでホシャイは祭司たち、ザドクとアビヤタルとに言った、「アヒトペルはアブサロムとイスラエルの長老たちのためにこういう計りごとをした。またわたしはこういう計りごとをした。
17-16 Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. それゆえ、あなたがたはすみやかに人をつかわしてダビデに告げ、『今夜、荒野の渡し場に宿らないで、必ず渡って行きなさい。さもないと王および共にいる民はみな、滅ぼされるでしょう』と言いなさい」。
17-17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En-rogel; and a maid-servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David: for they might not be seen to come into the city. 時に、ヨナタンとアヒマアズはエンロゲルで待っていた。ひとりのつかえめが行って彼らに告げ、彼らは行ってダビデ王に告げるのが常であった。それは彼らが町にはいるのを見られないようにするためである。
17-18 But a lad saw them, and told Absalom: and they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down thither. ところがひとりの若者が彼らを見てアブサロムに告げたので、彼らふたりは急いで去り、バホリムの、あるひとりの人の家にきた。その人の庭に井戸があって、彼らはその中に下ったので、
17-19 And the woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and strewed bruised grain thereon; and nothing was known. 女はおおいを取ってきて井戸の口の上にひろげ、麦をその上にまき散らした。それゆえその事は何も知れなかった。
17-20 And Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They are gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. アブサロムのしもべたちはその女の家にきて言った、「アヒマアズとヨナタンはどこにいますか」。女は彼らに言った、「あの人々は小川を渡って行きました」。彼らは尋ねたが見当らなかったのでエルサレムに帰った。
17-21 And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David, Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you. 彼らが去った後、人々は井戸から上り、行ってダビデ王に告げた。すなわち彼らはダビデに言った、「立って、すみやかに川を渡りなさい。アヒトペルがあなたがたに対してこういう計りごとをしたからです」。
17-22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan. そこでダビデは立って、共にいるすべての民と一緒にヨルダンを渡った。夜明けには、ヨルダンを渡らない者はひとりもなかった。
17-23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. アヒトペルは、自分の計りごとが行われないのを見て、ろばにくらを置き、立って自分の町に行き、その家に帰った。そして家の人に遺言してみずからくびれて死に、その父の墓に葬られた。
17-24 Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. ダビデはマハナイムにきた。またアブサロムは自分と共にいるイスラエルのすべての人々と一緒にヨルダンを渡った。
17-25 And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. アブサロムはアマサをヨアブの代りに軍の長とした。アマサはかのナハシの娘でヨアブの母ゼルヤの妹であるアビガルをめとったイシマエルびと、名はイトラという人の子である。
17-26 And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead. そしてイスラエルとアブサロムはギレアデの地に陣取った。
17-27 And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, ダビデがマハナイムにきた時、アンモンの人々のうちのラバのナハシの子ショビと、ロ・デバルのアンミエルの子マキル、およびロゲリムのギレアデびとバルジライは、
17-28 brought beds, and basins, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and parched grain, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, 寝床と鉢、土器、小麦、大麦、粉、いり麦、豆、レンズ豆、
17-29 and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of the herd, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people are hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness. 蜜、凝乳、羊、乾酪をダビデおよび共にいる民が食べるために持ってきた。それは彼らが、「民は荒野で飢え疲れかわいている」と思ったからである。
