2-1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. この後、ダビデは主に問うて言った、「わたしはユダの一つの町に上るべきでしょうか」。主は彼に言われた、「上りなさい」。ダビデは言った、「どこへ上るべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「ヘブロンへ」。
2-2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. そこでダビデはその所へ上った。彼のふたりの妻、エズレルの女アヒノアムと、カルメルびとナバルの妻であったアビガイルも上った。
2-3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. ダビデはまた自分と共にいた人々を、皆その家族と共に連れて上った。そして彼らはヘブロンの町々に住んだ。
2-4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul. 時にユダの人々がきて、その所でダビデに油を注ぎ、ユダの家の王とした。人々がダビデに告げて、「サウルを葬ったのはヤベシ・ギレアデの人々である」と言ったので、
2-5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. ダビデは使者をヤベシ・ギレアデの人々につかわして彼らに言った、「あなたがたは、主君サウルにこの忠誠をあらわして彼を葬った。どうぞ主があなたがたを祝福されるように。
2-6 And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. どうぞ主がいまあなたがたに、いつくしみと真実を示されるように。あなたがたが、この事をしたので、わたしもまたあなたがたに好意を示すであろう。
2-7 7?Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them. 今あなたがたは手を強くし、雄々しくあれ。あなたがたの主君サウルは死に、ユダの家がわたしに油を注いで、彼らの王としたからである」。
2-8 Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; さてサウルの軍の長、ネルの子アブネルは、さきにサウルの子イシボセテを取り、マハナイムに連れて渡り、
2-9 and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 彼をギレアデ、アシュルびと、エズレル、エフライム、ベニヤミンおよび全イスラエルの王とした。
2-10 Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. サウルの子イシボセテはイスラエルの王となった時、四十歳であって、二年の間、世を治めたが、ユダの家はダビデに従った。
2-11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. ダビデがヘブロンにいてユダの家の王であった日数は七年と六か月であった。
2-12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. ネルの子アブネル、およびサウルの子イシボセテの家来たちはマハナイムを出てギベオンへ行った。
2-13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. ゼルヤの子ヨアブとダビデの家来たちも出ていって、ギベオンの池のそばで彼らと出会い、一方は池のこちら側に、一方は池のあちら側にすわった。
2-14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. アブネルはヨアブに言った、「さあ、若者たちを立たせて、われわれの前で勝負をさせよう」。ヨアブは言った、「彼らを立たせよう」。
2-15 Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. こうしてサウルの子イシボセテとベニヤミンびととのために十二人、およびダビデの家来たち十二人を数えて出した。彼らは立って進み、
2-16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. おのおの相手の頭を捕え、つるぎを相手のわき腹に刺し、こうして彼らは共に倒れた。それゆえ、その所はヘルカテ・ハヅリムと呼ばれた。それはギベオンにある。
2-17 And the battle was very sore that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David. その日、戦いはひじょうに激しく、アブネルとイスラエルの人々はダビデの家来たちの前に敗れた。
2-18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. その所にゼルヤの三人の子、ヨアブ、アビシャイ、およびアサヘルがいたが、アサヘルは足の早いこと、野のかもしかのようであった。
2-19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. アサヘルはアブネルのあとを追っていったが、行くのに右にも左にも曲ることなく、アブネルのあとに走った。
2-20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I. アブネルは後をふりむいて言った、「あなたはアサヘルであったか」。アサヘルは答えた、「わたしです」。
2-21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. アブネルは彼に言った、「右か左に曲って、若者のひとりを捕え、そのよろいを奪いなさい」。しかしアサヘルはアブネルを追うことをやめず、ほかに向かおうともしなかった。
2-22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? アブネルはふたたびアサヘルに言った、「わたしを追うことをやめて、ほかに向かいなさい。あなたを地に撃ち倒すことなど、どうしてわたしにできようか。それをすれば、わたしは、どうしてあなたの兄ヨアブに顔を合わせることができようか」。
2-23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still. それでもなお彼は、ほかに向かうことを拒んだので、アブネルは、やりの石突きで彼の腹を突いたので、やりはその背中に出た。彼はそこに倒れて、その場で死んだ。そしてアサヘルが倒れて死んでいる場所に来る者は皆立ちとどまった。
2-24 But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. しかしヨアブとアビシャイとは、なおアブネルのあとを追ったが、彼らがギベオンの荒野の道のほとり、ギアの前にあるアンマの山にきた時、日は暮れた。
2-25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. ベニヤミンの人々はアブネルのあとについてきて、集まり、一隊となって、一つの山の頂に立った。
2-26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? その時アブネルはヨアブに呼ばわって言った、「いつまでもつるぎをもって滅ぼそうとするのか。あなたはその結果の悲惨なのを知らないのか。いつまで民にその兄弟を追うことをやめよと命じないのか」。
2-27 And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother. ヨアブは言った、「神は生きておられる。もしあなたが言いださなかったならば、民はおのおのその兄弟を追わずに、朝のうちに去っていたであろう」。
2-28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. こうしてヨアブは角笛を吹いたので、民はみな立ちとどまって、もはやイスラエルのあとを追わず、また重ねて戦わなかった。
2-29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim. アブネルとその従者たちは、夜もすがら、アラバを通って行き、ヨルダンを渡り、昼まで行進を続けてマハナイムに着いた。
2-30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. ヨアブはアブネルを追うことをやめて帰り、民をみな集めたが、ダビデの家来たち十九人とアサヘルとが見当らなかった。
2-31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died. しかし、ダビデの家来たちは、アブネルの従者であるベニヤミンの人々三百六十人を撃ち殺した。
2-32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron. 人々はアサヘルを取り上げてベツレヘムにあるその父の墓に葬った。ヨアブとその従者たちは、夜もすがら行って、夜明けにヘブロンに着いた。
